Hundreds of years ago, a man named Gregory Venteil became the President of the United States of America. Little is now known about this man or how he came into power, but it is said that he was insane, and, as soon as he came to power, launched nuclear weapons upon China, Russia, the U.K., and the middle east. Each responded by sending out their own at every piece of land they could reach. In less than a day, the world was completely destroyed and covered in radiation. Only a few hundred thousand people lived, taking shelter in so called Mega-Cities, large constructs designed to withstand nuclear fallout.
With time, the radiation subsided enough for people to survive outside of the Mega-Cities, and many people were cast out into the wastes for various crimes. The remaining radiation distorted them, changing them in many ways. Many went insane, but some discovered new, strange, sometimes frightening powers, but this was rare. mostly, the radiation just killed.
Now the lakes and rivers remain as the only heavily polluted places on land, but the last is still left barren and scared from the war.
