Wow. I haven't thought about this in a while. This will be fun.
When I think about it, I realize that classic Sonic has caused me so much more pain that the current gen Sonic has. Sonic 1 and 2 make me want to rip my hair out, Sonic's design isn't as steady as with the current gen, and the current design does give him a lot more personality than a simple hedgehog that puts his fingers up at random times.
Some people (primarily nostalgiafags) complain about Classic Sonic not being a staple any longer and how he should be reintroduced into the games, but unless its a spinoff, he will not come back as a main player character. I hear countless complaints about people wanting 2.5D Sonic 3 and Knuckles and while that may seem cool, there really isn't anything special about putting classic Sonic into 3D. It's not like he'll control any different. Gain any new moves. Level design centered around classic Sonic has been atrocious for all but one or two games, so why keep going with something that can barely be expanded upon anymore? Sonic 3 and Knuckles was the absolute furthest they could take classic Sonic before needing to add new moves and such.
If you ask me, I say Sonic's current iteration is likely the best it's been in a while, due to the variance between games and the multiple different experiences each one offers. Along with that, I feel that personality wise, Sonic is much more fleshed out.
This has nothing to do with the Sonic Boom redesigns, mind you.
but i still think they're awful
