School of the Night

Lindsey turned to Heather.
"We should find a way out somewhere up here."

(I guess I'll be the teacher mrgreen And her name will be Ms. Wormwood, like from 'Calvin and Hobbes'.)

The teacher stopped writing an eqaution on the whiteboard and turned around. "Yes you may, but let me write you a pass." She said sophistically and pulled out a pen and piece of paper. She left the paper on the desk. "Now, back to what we were doing." She told the class and began writing away on the whiteboard.

Not waiting for her, Lindsey kept going on her way, ducking through the halls that were quiet empty.

"Okay class," Ms.Wormwood began. "Take out your notes. It's time to take a quiz." Then she wrote the title on the board. It read: The Human Body. Then a boy in the back raised his hand. "Wait, the human body or you mean us?" He asked politely. The teacher turned to him. "Yes, the human body. Weren't you here last Friday for the notes?" She slightly pulled her glasses down on the bridge of her nose while looking at him. "N-no ma'am." He said sheepishly. "Then you can take it later." She told him while handing out the quizzes.

'Phew.' Sarah thought to herself. 'For a second I thought she meant us! There's so many different people here, there's no way there'd be that kind of quiz.' Even though they were never quizzed on that type of stuff, the students of the school were still required to learn a few things about the interesting bodies of the night people.
Sarah aced the quiz sweat-free. "That wasn't too hard." She said to one of her friends who nodded in return. Thus the bell rang and everyone jumped out of their seats.

"Remember! We're starting quadratics tomorrow!" Ms.Wormwood called as everyone left to head to their dorms.

Sarah grabbed her backpack and charged down the hall with excitement in hopes to see if Lindsey had joined yet. "I can't wa-!" All of sudden, there was a POOF. "Wait- what??" She exclaimed. Then she looked at her backpack which was now as big as she. "Gah!! I hate this!" Her long white ears drooped. But this could be an advantage. She was small and could hop more quickly as a rabbit than she could run as a girl. Then she dragged her backpack into the classroom and Ms.Wormwood said she would watch it. "Okay. Now to go look for Lindsey." She said and took off down the halls making sure not to get stepped on. She listened and smelled her way around.

She sighed when she reached the hallway of buzzing people. She hoped to God no one would notice her as a human. She walked, hood up, head down, through the turents of demons. Some noticed the smell but none could find the source. Lindsey almost cried with relief when she saw the door. She forced herself to remain calm as she quick walked towards freedom. She reached the door and pushed out into the night. She smiled to herself. She had made it!
She dashed out into the dark yard and hopefully was running off the campus grounds. She smacked into somebody and they rolled through the grass. Sharp talons grabbed her arms, making her cry out. She opened her eyes and could barley make out the shape of a head.
"Who are you?" She asked forcefully, keeping in mind she was a demon too. The boy tightend his grip on her and she cringed.
"You... What are you doing here? You don't belong here."
"I...I know that!" she snapped back. "So, if you'd just let me go, I'd be back in my place. He lifted her onto her feet forcefully and stared her in the eyes. She wished she could see in the dark.
"You have to stay here until morning. Then you can leave. Is that so hard?" his voice was unervingly calm and deep and it sey her off.
"How can I?! I'm in here with all thses people wh-who I don't even know! And..." she choked a bit, her heart beating hard against her chest like a drum. She was so scared right then. Then he did something that shocked her: He gave her a tender hug. She blinked as he let go.
"You can get through it, Lindsey."
She gasped. How did he know her?! A flash of sharp teeth told her he was smiling.
"Just be strong. You'll make it! It's just like school, only at night time. Now go, before they find you here."
"Who are you?" she whispered as he finally let her arms go.
He laughed, making her nervous. There was something about him that was disturbingly farmiliar.
"Good luck." A huge burst of heat came from him and she covered her eyes from the orange flames and then he was gone, leaving her to stare out at nothing.

Sarah dashed through the crowds of people and dodged their feet. She traced Lindsey's scent and hopped down the stairs. She was about to jolt past a pair of boots when they quickly blocked her and she slammed into them. "Hey! Watch where you're going!" She shouted and rubbed her head.
"Oh what do we have here?? A little bunny!" A hand gruffly grabbed her by the scruff and she squirmed. "Let me go!" She shouted at the person in black. They were now face to face. He flashed his sharp teeth at her. "Hm, sadly I'm hungry right about this time." Sarah's eyes widened but she thought quickly. CHOMP! She bit his nose and he immediately let her go. "Freakin' rabbit!" He grabbed his nose and swore but she was long gone before he could do anything. "Blech!" She spat while running. 'Definitely needs to wash his face.' She thought. Before knowing it, Sarah had reached the door and walked closely behind someone when they exited. She sniffed around intently and followed one of the many smells until she saw a familiar person. "Hey! Lindsey!" She hopped. "Where have you been?? It's extremely dangerous for a human to be out here!" She shouted in a whisper while jumping up and down from anxiety.

Lindsey looked down and starred at Sarah.
"Uhhh... Right, but wouldn't it be more dangerous to be inside?* she asked.
"You know, where all the students are, prowling the halls?"

"Well...you do have a point." Sarah scratched her head. She looked past the forest and her ears perked up instantly. "Hey! Wait a sec!" She turned her gaze back to Lindsey. "It's about 3:59 in the morning right now! Before I left class, the clock said 3:55. And school is out at 4:00." She smiled up at her tall friend. "So the bell should ring.....now." Sure enough, the bell rang four times and everyone on campus rushed to their dorms. Some charging past each other while others savored the walk . For few, it was dangerous to be out past four since the sun comes up quick. "Come on, it should be fine. Besides, even though you're human it's not really dangerous to be around others because we do have rules you know." Then she thought to herself. 'Even though now everybody follows them.' Sarah beckoned her friend to follow her to their room. She paused for a moment while waiting for a response. "By the way, did anyone bother you at all? And don't be afraid to say so."

Lindsey felt a thrill run through her as she saw the stamped of students rush by and she stayed close to Sarahs side.
"Um... No, no one bugged me much." she said slowly, "If they did, I probably wouldn't be whole."
She let out a nervous laugh and scratching the back of her head.
"Eh heh... yeah..." there was a short pause. "So.. can I go now?"

"Okay, if you say so." Sarah looked ahead at the closed iron gate then back up at Lindsey. "Well, you can try I guess...but once a human steps foot through that gate onto our campus, then they're pretty much stuck here until the end of the year." There was a sudden poof and white clouds appeared out of nowhere. "Phew! That's better. I nearly became rabbit stew earlier." She gave a small laugh. It felt good to be back in her own normal five foot and 4 inch tall body.
"Anyways, it's true that we can sneak off campus, buuuuuut if a human sneaks off campus without registering into the school's student system then they'll be turned into one of us creature's so that they can't be normal ever again. They do it that way so that the human can't live amongst their kind without being...well, human. It's one of those "force-you-to-do-something" things cause how could you go back to your own school as a creature? So in that situation, you have no choice but to attend here."
She paused and sympathetically added, "Sorry to lay it all on you that way, I don't always agree with how things here work...but it's best that you do know how it works and why. But they say it has to do with "safety" or whatever because if someone came here, learned about this school's secret, and went back to tell more people then we'd be in trouble."
Sarah took Lindsey's hand and gently tugged her in the direction of her dorm. "You can worry about the registration stuff later." She said and smiled. "Some sleep would probably do you good after being up all this time."

Lindsey did feel a bit scared and over whelmed, sleep would help, if she could close her eyes. She let Sarah led her towards the dorms.
What if she became a monster too? When she tried to escape? Did she want to be a monster? Things were sure to be a lot more interesting then at normal school and the idea appealed to her every thought.
"Um, what kind of monster do you become when you sneak off campus?" she asked her curiously.

Sarah gave this some thought. "I dunno. It depends on the person."
Suddenly, someone busted through the doors. "Alright! Where's that rabbit?!" His gaze turned to Lindsey and Tori. "YOU! Did you see a white hopper come through here?!" Anyone could see that he was mad as all heck.
Sarah decided to be straight up honest and built up her courage. "You're lookin' right at her." She said coolly. The teen looked back at her friend and told her to hide at a distance.
He smirked. "Very funny doll. I can tell that not even you would do that."
Sarah rolled her eyes. "Better believe it. Oh, and I hope you put a band aid on your nose." Her body began to tense up.
His smirk left as quick as it came. "Perhaps someone should put you in your place." He paced himself towards Sarah.
"Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?" She questioned him.
"I hate smart remarks." He said in a deep voice and charged at her then followed with a punch.
Sarah ducked and her adrenaline rushed. Clouds surrounded her and blocked the guy's vision. Sarah let out a roar and leaped through the clouds as she stretched out her orange and black striped arm attempting to scratch her adversary. "Is this really worth the trouble?" She growled at him.
The guy's fingernails turned into claws and he rushed at the girl yet again trying to slash her.
She dodged his claws and swiped his arm with her claws.
This pushed him over the edge and a dark aura surrounded him. "I'll end this quickly." He raised his hand and out of his palm came dark spears. They hit Sarah and he watched as she froze in place.
'Crap! I can't move!' She thought frantically.
But as soon as she thought she was toast, a night proctor came out of nowhere and unleashed white vapors out at the two. The boy's claws and black aura disappeared and Sarah returned from her tiger state. She let her body drop to the ground with relief.
"NO FIGHTING! I'll report this to the principal!" He shouted.
The guy shook his head and saw Sarah on the ground. He ran up to her. "Hey! Are you okay?" He asked worried.
The teen looked up and rolled to a crouch. "Back off you psycho! Trying to play all innocent now that a proctor's here!"
He looked at her funny but the proctor grabbed his arm. "You've got quite a record but it's not your fault. And it looks like you'll still need some training." He looked up at the now standing teen. "You'll have to excuse Jay. He's got a double who likes to cause a racket." Jay looked up at her with a sympathetic face. "I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused. I hope I didn't hurt you." The proctor then walked him back inside where he'd receive more training.
This sounded a little fishy to Sarah but it seemed legit because he probably wouldn't even had let a proctor get in the way. So maybe he really was a nice guy but with a bad side. "Hey Lindsey! You can come out now." She called.

Lindsey peaked her head around and watched with bated breath as the two duke it out.
"Wow!" she breathed and once the proctor came in and settled things down and Jay was escorted out, Lindsey came back into view with a huge grin on her face.
"That was amazing!" she slathered. "You turned into a tiger! A tiger! That was so epic!" she commented and she clapped her hands. "You must learn a lot in this school, huh? And probably fight a lot from all the tension I've seen here. It's pretty intense..."
She looked around the big room with an impressed face.
"So, these are what all the dorms look like?"

"Well, actually...I don't turn into an animal at will. You see, I turn into one based on my mood." She explained. "Since I was in a fight or flight mode, my body reacted and I turned into a tiger for self-defense. I don't know a whole lot about my ability so I just learn as I go."
Aside from that, she led Lindsey into her dorm. "This is my room." She welcomed her new guest inside. It was a simple not out-of-the-ordinary room with a metal bunk bed, a large, clean bathroom with a hot tub/shower, walls decorated with cute swirly designs and pictures, a big wooden dresser, a nice desk that has a well-sized working space and an entertainment unit complete with a stereo and TV.

She sat on the bed.
"I could get used to this" she said. "It's nice."
She wasn't sure if she wanted to stay here forever though, even if it was what she had always dreamed of. An adventurous life...
