The World

A place where people can go to escape reality.

A place where you can be whomever you want to be.

A place to be ƒree.

It has been a year since The World R:2 was first released, and all seemed to be going smoothly. Up until two months ago, that is. At first, the glitches were minor. Misplaced textures, missing landmarks (such as the Beast Statues and the treasure they hold) and the occasional out-of-place monster. These were assumed to be simple bugs that could be fixed with future troubleshooting. However, much to the horror of the new line of administrators, things soon took a turn for the worst.

People started disappearing. Users would post cryptic messages about “alternate fields” and “Gods” that inhabited them, then never be heard from again. What their online companions were not informed of was that they were found in their homes, reduced to a comatose state from some unknown source. Thankfully for CC Corp, these incidents were few. Curiously though, only players who reported seeing these “alternate fields” would end up in this state.

In the meantime, the bugs were growing worse. Players would find themselves with mysterious and ultimately random status ailments. The out-of-place monsters disappeared completely, but were replaced by something even more fearsome. Monsters appropriate to the field would appear, but their stats would be heavily increased. While not impossible for players to handle, they could cause havoc on low level dungeons. These monsters were deemed “Variants” by the staff, and the term eventually reached the general user population.

The most horrifying aspects of the rising issues were placed upon the administration. While scouring the programming for the problems, troubling phrases not originally coded into the system would appear. Terms like “Ifret”, “Cursed Wave” and “Sister” would crop up from time to time, some more common than others. Anyone who made any sort of headway in their investigations would disappear, collapsing into comas as well. Something tremendous was happening, and those charged with fixing it were frightened by all belief. What could possibly have this sort of power within The World, and how can it seemingly reach anyone who catches on to it?
