Funny thing.
All the houses, and environments re rendered in 3D before being reformatted for the 2D form.
So just as much work, but less lag.

They already said that the environment is going to be 3d, but the characters and monsters (or most of the monsters) will be 2-d. Just using common sense, there is definitely going to be some 2d aspects to it, seeing as how they use our Gaian avatars, which are 2d. Think of it similiar to Ragnarok, although I doubt we will be able to move the camera around.

Think of all the trouble it would be to re-create all the existing items on gaia and making it 3-D honestly it would never get done.

It can be done in 3D, they chose 2.5D for better use for all members.
(Slower connections and such.)
