What is an AoE Ring?

I keep hearing this term, yet I'm not quite sure what it is. I'm assuming it's a type of attack ring. Yet what does AoE mean?

i.e. does damage/takes place against targets in a certain range as opposed to single target damage

e.g. guns guns guns, fire rain, heavy water balloon, slash, healing halo

not e.g. last time i checked: solar rays, meat

Healing Halo is not AoE. Might you be thinking of Diagnose or r4 Wish?

Rings that are AoE at normal are- , Fire Rain, Dervish, HWB, Diagnose, Slash, Hornet Nest

Rings that require rage to AoE- Hot Foot, GGGuns, Wish, Duct tape, Scaredy, Quicksand and Gumshoe

Crowd Controls are different but are typically AoE. For example, Quicksand quicksand has the ability to influence huge mobs using AoE on just r1. On the other hand, there's Cat, Tape, Taunt, etc. that are crowd controls that need to be raged to do AoE, thus influencing many enemies.

edit: Crowd Controls aren't meant to do damage, and that would be the biggest difference.
