I wanted to start a discussion here that would normally fall into GCD, but with the Battle Sytem coming up I thought it was relevant here also.

What are people's opinions about people not speaking English on the site, and what are people's opinions about people not speaking English when talking/using the Battle System.

Multi-langual users, native-english speakers, non-native Englsih speakers and anyone who want to join this discussion is welcome to participate.
For beginners, I'm a Native English speaker born in the US. I was fluent in French, but not so much because I rarely get the chance to use it anymore.

I'm interested in starting a community dialogue on this subject because it interests me.

I think having the site translated into many different languages would be nifty, but would require a LOT of work and probably isn't on tap at the moment..it took Neopets (OH NO THE N-WORD) 4 or 5 years to offer the site in different languages, and they have greater resources...

i know why you made this thread, because of that person who told the people speaking spanish that this was an "english site" hehe..I'm filipino myself and yes, other languages are accepted in gaia.

I agree, it would take a lot of resources.

But that wasn't really what I was talking about, although it is relevent.

I think Gaia is a long way from translating its site when there isn't a lot of people who can vocalize their desire for such a service. There seems to be a lot of bad blood when people don't use English, and the people who don't speak English as a native language get shouted down.

How could anyone ask gaia to offer a multi-lingual web page when there are people blasting people to "USE ENGLISH THIS IS AN ENGLISH SITE."

When in fact, Gaia draws users from all around. A lot of those people are my friends.

(be back soon, hopefully the dialogue coninues)

Oh.
Well now that's just silly.
People are entitled to speak whichever language they wish.

I used to moderate a chat where the rules forbid anyone from speaking anything but english, because no one could know what they were saying. I always found it rather ridiculous...
But then again, this chat also forbid people from using bold or italic font rofl

I enjoy seeing other people converse in other languages, it inspires me to go out and learn =)

English is my native language, but I know a little Spanish and I find it somewhat annoying for people to talk in different languages. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if they offered multi-lingual systems, it's just alot of non-native English speakers will insult me when I'm talking to friends. I know enough Spanish to tell when someone calls me a b*tch.

Gaia's HQ is located in the US, right?
Looks like some people better start learning English.

True, but not just American users log on to Gaia. It would be fair to say that Gaia could get multi-lingual, but Gaia needs the resources in order to do so.
lol heheh centuries later dude wtf?! you dont know spanish?!! we live in !#@$!#$! AMERICA foo.

Yes, headquarters are in the US, but that doesn't mean anything really, especially when it is a website used all over the world.

I think you'll find that not only do international websites translate their websites, but there are many federal and local governments (Texas and Califorrnia come to mind) that use translation services.

As someone who can speak another language (and pick up a few words here and there in other languages) I think it's stupid. And I don't think many people really care when a group of college students get on this site and start speaking French in the casino. I think mostly it's the Spanish speaking population that get singled out because of other issues that play a part.

And I'm talking about prejudice, which is not something a lot of people feel comfortable talking about. In fact, most people feel like they're being attacked or accused, when an issue like discrimination comes up.
Well... I speak english as a second language and I don't mind Gaia being English-exclusive. You wanna go on English websites, you learn English first or you learn it on the site.

And I think that non-english users would agree with you as well...

You have to know English to some degree to use Gaia.

I don't think the non-English speakers appreciate being attacked if they chose not to speak English, however.
