you should get some product too! it takes a while to train your hair to do what you want it to do.
i think the guy did an okay job considering he was a 50 yo moroccan immigrant (i prefer people around my age to cut my hair, cuz they have an idea of what looks good to others), but he did take a bit too much off the sides. glad to say i didn't end up looking like macklemore at least. lol
