17-Year-Old Charged

A toddler was found dumped inside a recycling bin outside a house in Winnipeg in frigid temperatures, leading to charges against a 17-year-old who police say was responsible.

Police in Winnipeg said the suspect was at a house party on Pritchard Avenue when a fight broke out and another person was chased from the home. With the toddler’s mother distracted by the fight, the suspect took the 22-month-old girl and ran from the home.

“You have family, you have friends, you’re enjoying a good time and then something like this, you know beyond comprehension certainly. I think we’ve all hosted parties and had children present, would never in a million years could believe something like this could ever occur,” said Const. Eric Hofley, a police spokesman.

As the 17-year-old boy was running, he allegedly fell and landed on the toddler, causing a number of injuries. Police say the boy then dumped the young girl into a recycling bin, where she was trapped for close to 15 minutes in wind chills that dipped below zero.

Robert Keno said he found the young girl was wearing almost no clothes when he found her trapped in the bin.

“As soon as I looked down that baby looked up at me and she stopped crying,” Keno told CBC News. “She held out her arms. There was a lot of things going through my head. And so I picked up this baby and she was just cold. I couldn’t believe she was only in a diaper [and pants]. I picked up this baby and I yelled back out there to call the cops. I just found a baby in a garbage can.”

Police said the suspect then returned to the party and got into a fight with a 13-year-old girl.

Authorities said the girl was so injured that her left eye couldn’t open. She barely had a pulse at the time she was found, and police said she likely could have died if she was in the bin any longer.

The toddler’s mother said she doesn’t know why the 17-year-old suspect put her toddler in a recycling bin, but said the boy had been drinking excessively at the time of the incident.

That's cold.

Thank the stars that the little girl was found in time... otherwise there would be an article of a toddler found dead in a recycling bin.

Kidding aside. I'm glad the kid got rescued.

I assume the mother is an adult, then again she could be one of those teen moms, but why is a mom holding a party and allowing a 17 year old to drink and possibly a 13 year old. What kind of party exactly was this?

Was she the party's hostess or just another guest? That part was not clear to me.

.
Sure they are, but they are supposed to be put in their own special bins and not mixed in with the paper or plastic.

No, but under safe haven laws you can dump them off at the cops, fire dept, or hospital.
