“Alright. So perhaps Ella and I should run up behind him, then bump into him hard enough on our way past to make him stop us. That way, Cai, you can come up behind him to get the wand,” said Sevix. Ella smiled - it was a good plan, even if it was slightly dangerous - and in short order, the pair were catching up to the 6th year. When they were within ten feet or so behind the massive 6th year, they broke into a run and bumped into him at virtually the same time at almost full speed. They hit him and passed, still running at full speed, shooting insincere apologies over their shoulders, and managed to get about another foot and a half before Ella felt a hand fasten around her arm, forcefully yanking her back. She and Sevix turned to look at the 6th year, feigning confusion as to why he'd stopped them and so forcefully too. “You little pricks, what the ******** are you up to?” snarled the 6th year, tightening his grip on their arms. Ella merely glared at the boy - because how dare he grab Elladora Malfoy in such a manner! - but Sevix looked terrified and stammered, “We-we said we were sorry… We are just trying to go see how our friend is, someone hurt him and he’s at Madam Pomfry’s..” Ella was impressed with her friends acting skills; he looked worried and sounded terrified that they'd been stopped by a hulking 6th year. Naturally the 6th year had no idea that the 'injured friend' Sevix had mentioned was now fiddling with the hulking 6th year's wand. The student holding them was obviously unconcerned with the fact that he'd apparently put some first year kid in the medical wing. “Maybe I should have you little shits join him. A death eater Gryffindor and his Slytherin girlfriend.” Ella puffed up like an aggravated cobra, snapping, "Oh very witty because apparently being a Slytherin is an insult and I'll have you know, you imbecile, that the Death Eaters were the most loyal people to walk this Earth, even if you don't agree with their choices. Uncultured swine." The man seemed to grow legitimately angry at her words and seemed ready to actually harm them... But there were enough people around them, enough people paying attention, that he seemed to think better of it and instead let them go, pushing between them and heading off to wherever it was that he'd been going in the first place. Ella and Sevix looked over at Cai inquiringly and got a thumbs up, indicating that success had been made; they grinned and rejoined him, keeping an eye out for the angry sixth year.

“Weasely's Wand Nullifier. The next spell he casts will backfire spectacularly,” Cai explained, finally telling them what he'd been up to. “Like as if he messed up the incantation." He moved to lean up against a wall, continuing, "So, revenge aside, do you guys want to go see the tryouts for the other te-” He suddenly went straight through the wall as though it wasn't there; clearly, their friend was developing a certain knack for finding hidden passageways accidentally. Unlike the last time he'd found one, however, he didn't come back out right away and the air was incredibly silent; there were no noises from the hidden passageway, as though no one had been there. Ella shared a look with Sevix and they stuck their head through the hidden passageway to see that there was a long stone slide that disappeared into the darkness. The Slytherin first year could hear the faint sound of Cai hurtling down the slide but not much else; it seemed that the magic that hid the passageway also muted the sounds. “It's a slide guys... I don't think I can climb back up,” he called up the slide. Ella looked over at Sevix, who looked like he didn't want to jump down the slide, and said, "Sorry Sevix." She gave him a push, sending him through the wall and onto the slide. Ella jumped down after him. Cai didn't get out of the way fast enough and got nailed by Sevix, sending them both down. By the time they'd untangled themselves, Ella had reached the bottom and slammed into Cai, sending them both down again. “First: I don't think I should lean on anymore walls,” Cai told them as he untangled himself from her. “Second, where the heck are we? Third... ow.” Ella brushed her robes off and looked around. "Where are we?" she asked. The torches didn't illuminate much. She pulled her wand out and held it high, saying, "Lumos." Her wand lit up, illuminating more of the room; it was really large and she couldn't even see the far side... But there was something about this room that was making her skin crawl. The trio moved forward, Cai and Sevix also lighting their wands, and they looked around, trying to figure out where they are. They were still in the castle, as far as Ella could tell, but aside from that, she couldn't say where they were...

Something loomed out of the darkness and the trio let out nearly unanimous shrieks and cowered backwards. Ella was the first to recover when the figure didn't move and stood upright, moving forward and holding her wand up. It was- "Death eater robes," she said, examining the robes and the mask. "I've seen these before. They were all confiscated after the war; the Ministry tossed my home up, looking for robes like these, but they never found anything. What is this doing here?" Further back, behind the Death Eater robes, were more things. Portraits, things that Ella thought looked like bones, some broken things that might have been from a destroyed statue or headstone. They'd walked into a- "We need to get out of here. This is a shrine to the late Lord Voldemort; we shouldn't be here. This shouldn't even be here. We need to find a way out. Come on." Ella led the way deeper into the room, passing jars of grotesque things and more broken statue-esque things and portraits. Someone seriously had a thing for the Dark Lord but how had they gotten all of this into Hogwarts? It didn't make sense... And how long was this room? It seemed like they'd been walking forever... But finally they came to a door set into the wall and, when opened, they were confronted with a set of stairs that ran up into the darkness. Thankfully they had no troubles walking up, as everyone had their wands lit, and at the top of the stairs they found a trap door, which put them out right on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. If any teacher caught them out this far, they'd all end up with detention. "Should we tell someone about what we saw? None of that stuff should be there. It's all... Illegal. And... Being near those things made my skin crawl. We need to tell someone." It was going to be dark soon. They needed to get back up to the castle, and soon, to avoid having suspicion placed upon them and also to avoid getting detention.

Sevix and Ella quickly approached Cai after receiving the thumbs up. “Weasely's Wand Nullifier. The next spell he casts will backfire spectacularly. Like as if he messed up the incantation. So, revenge aside, do you guys want to go see the tryouts for the other te-” Cai explained what it was that he had put on the wand and what it would do, then started asking what the others wanted to do for the rest of the day, when he suddenly vanished. Sevix stared at the wall Cai had fallen through, and when his friend didn’t re-appear, he and Ella approached the wall and stuck their heads through. “Cai?” He inquired as he looked about, only to see a slide leading down into the darkness. Well, that certainly explained why Cai hadn’t immediately told them he was okay.

As the two stood there, Cai’s voice wavered up to them, almost completely muted by the magic of this hidden slide. Not exactly wanting to follow Cai down, Sevix looked over to Ella, “I think we-“ “Sorry Sevix.” Confusion hit Sevix, why was she… And suddenly she pushed him. Sevix tried to grab onto anything, and had almost grabbed onto Ella herself to keep from falling but all he caught was air before he smashed down onto the slide and started zooming down, head first. A minor panic overtook him as he slid down further and further into the darkness. He tried to slow himself down and change his position so he wasn’t sliding head first, but before either of those things could happen he was ejected from the slide and smashed hard into Cai. They pair of them crumpled to the floor in a heap, and Sevix started to roll away, holding his head, just getting out the way as Ella came crashing down onto Cai.

“I do not think avoiding leaning on walls will help with keeping you from finding these places.” Sevix said as he stood up, holding his aching neck with one hand and pulling out his wand with the other. “We must be under the castle.” He replied to Ella’s question of where they were, “Lumos.” His wand lit brightly, joining with the light from Ella and Cai’s wand, it let them see pretty well. They moved slowly through the expansive room, not getting terribly far before a figure loomed out of the shadows. The three of them jumped back with startled shrieks, but when the figure didn’t move they approached once more. Sevix instantly recognized the robes of a death eater, and Ella voiced what he was about to. “I sure hope these were here before the war..” He didn’t have to say that, if they were not, that meant someone who had been in the school after the war had placed these items here. That was not a pleasant idea to think about.

The three of them moved passed the robes to find a whole shrine of things set up. Portraits, bones, jars, bits of statue… and countless other things. Sevix stopped moving forward at one point, the other two not having noticed and so they continued slowly on. A picture with a couple candles about it caught his attention and fear welled up in his heart. In the picture, a younger version of himself was standing with the Dark Lord, practicing spellwork. Sevix quickly grabbed it, and hid it in his robes while looking for anything else he might be present in. Nothing else stood out, so he quickly caught up to the other two, who hadn’t even noticed he had lagged behind. The room continued on and on, before finally they reached a wall with a door set in it. It opened to a long dark stairway and the three of them quickly started making their way up it, not wanting to be down there for another second if it could be helped.

The stairs seemed to go on forever until a trapdoor barred their way. Thankfully, it wasn’t locked and they made their way outside, only to find themselves just on the edge of the forbidden forest. "Should we tell someone about what we saw? None of that stuff should be there. It's all... Illegal. And... Being near those things made my skin crawl. We need to tell someone." Sevix wasn’t sure he wanted to tell anyone, not right away anyways. There could be countless things in that room that confirmed to everyone who he was. But if he said they shouldn’t… wouldn’t that also seem suspicious? An idea struck him, he’d just have to sneak back down and take a good look to find and remove anything that involved him, before any of the professors got involved. “Let us tell someone tomorrow. We should return to our common rooms, it is getting late and the shrine is not like to move in the night.” The other two, while hesitant about not telling anyone right away, agreed. They closed the trap door and headed back to the castle.

Later that night, after Sevix was sure everyone was asleep, he quietly got out of bed and threw on his robes over his pjs, before sneaking down and out of the Gryffindor common rooms. He cast a couple disguising spells on himself as he headed out, so as not to be caught in the corridors at night. He roamed the halls for a while before managing to find the hidden slide once more. A quick slide down and he was once more with the shrine to his father. Not having a whole lot of time, Sevix did a quick look through all the portraits he could find, and removed any that held even a fleeting glance of him or his face. Thankfully, there were not many, the one had taken earlier held the most direct look of him. Unsure as to how much time had passed by the time he looked through everything, he ran to the exit and bolted up the stairs. Being careful as to not be seen, despite his disguising spells, he went a short way into the forbidden forest. He piled everything removed from the shrine into a small pile and ignited it. He watched the pictures burn for a few seconds before a loud snapping noise nearby caused him to return as quickly as possible to the castle.

When morning hit, Sevix was beyond tired still, having hardly gotten back before sunrise. Cai woke him by dropping Max onto his head. The cat, annoyed and disheveled hissed and bounded away. Sevix pulled himself out of his sleepy daze and sat up. “Why..?” He questioned when woken, “There are no classes today…” He yawned. Cai told him that the quidditch team list was going to be posted right away, they had to get down there and see if Sevix got the spot. Sevix nodded, his sleepiness weighed to much on him to let his excitement bubble up at the moment. “Okay… okay.” He slowly got up and dressed, then set some food out for Max before heading downstairs with Cai.

By the time they got downstairs, the list had been posted and most people had taken a look at it. There were a lot of excited voices about and a few unhappy. And as soon as Cai and Sevix appeared there were a few congratulations shot their way but most people ignored them. Those congratulations perked Sevix up a bit and he more quickly made his way to the posted list. Cai’s name was not on the list, but listed beside Seeker was the name, Riddle, Sevix.

As his friends wondered aloud where exactly they were, Cai took a moment to look himself over to make sure he wasn't bleeding from being deep-cleated twice by his friends coming out of the slide. His quick once over showed he was fine, so, aside from some winces of pain, he was smiling as they looked. This room felt gigantic, but aside from being dark, there was nothing to suggest anything sinister was going on- oh.

The trio came upon a pair of Death Eater robes, making them all shriek and jump, dropping their wands, and sending the light away from the robes. A bit of scrambling later, and they recovered enough to see they were simply robes. These should have been confiscated, so what were they doing here? Sevix mentioned he hoped they were here before the war, and while he agreed, Cai had a feeling they were not. Something about this place... it was a shrine devoted to the Dark Lord, a fact driven home the more they explored. It was most definitely set up after the fall of the He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, though the question remained... after which fall? As they looked, he picked up necklace, running his fingers over it to wipe the dust, before dropping it as he felt a jolt run up his spine. It had to be this place, which was feeling darker by the second. He shook his hand a bit to clear the shock he felt in it..

Ella broke the silence, stating they needed to get out of here; Cai could not agree more. This entire room just felt... dark and heavy. Even beyond the items stored in it. He couldn't explain it, but the further they walked, the more the room seemed to weigh in on him. It was feeling that did not lift until they escaped through a trap door and found themselves in the Forbidden Forest. As Ella asked if they should tell anyone, and Sevix suggested telling them tomorrow, Cai foraged in his pockets. He found a Drooble's bubblegum wrapper, and crumpled it up a bit so the bright yellow outside was still visible, and dropped it at their feet to help mark the trapdoor. Now that they were outside of the door, it blended in perfectly with the dirt beneath their feet, and it would be good to find it again.
“Okay... tomorrow. First thing, we meet in the Great Hall and find a teacher.” he finally spoke up. His ever-present smile was gone from his face. Apparently it took a shrine to the Dark Lord and an evil room to wipe the smile from his face.

It was somber walk back to the castle, but the three made it back without incident... running into a teacher now would mean having to explain everything, and Cai still felt a lingering darkness from the room in his heart. It felt... like nothing he could explain. Much better than when they were in the room, but still it weighed heavily.

Sleep did not come easily to Cai; every time he closed his eyes, memories and images would flash before them, jerking him wide awake. It was while he was lying in bed and trying to clear his head that he heard Sevix get out of his bed and sneak out of the room. Curious, Cai quietly climbed out of bed and watched Sevix from the spiral staircase; Sevix cast some disguising spellwork and climbed out of the room... not a student going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Tempted as he was to follow and satisfy his curiosity, Cai could guess what Sevix was up to. Nobody went to this much trouble for something without good reason... but Cai would not push it. Instead, he retreated back to the common room, and tried to fall back asleep. Sleep once again eluded him, so he retreated to his journal, trying to write out what he was feeling. Hand shaking, he threw his pen across the room, where hit the heater warming the cold stone room. Where had that come from? Shaking his head, he put the journal away and took a deep breath. This was going to be a long night.

Sevix returned sometime close to the morning, and Cai let him rest for a bit before waking him up with Max. Cai felt exhausted, but was used to running on little sleep. He'd pass out later that night, and for now would seem like his normal, chipper self. Sevix resisted waking up, questioning why as Cai sat on his own bed petting Max to calm him back down.
“Quidditch tryouts! Well, not the tryouts, we already did that. The results, your name on the board.” Cai explained. No sense in rushing into telling people about that room... not what he wanted to think about right now. Max was soon purring as Sevix got ready, and Cai set Max on the bed, giving him one last scratch behind the ears before heading out of the room.

A small crowd surrounded the list, a mix of happy and disappointed voices. Cai pushed a hole forward so they could look, and pointed right to the Seeker result; he didn't even look at the Beater results. His plan seemed to have worked yesterday after all. Sure enough, Sevix's name was on the list; he made it!
“Told you that you'd make it! You were amazing!” Cai laughed happily. How could he ruin this happiness with that room? No way... he would just say he forgot in the excitement is all.

Sevix seemed to be in shock as some other students congratulated him; Cai had to practically drag him out of the room to head down to breakfast. Word was spreading fast, as Sevix was congratulated in the hallways as they walked; in no time at all, the whole school would know it seemed. The Great Hall was barely occupied, as most students tended to sleep in on their days off. Ella was already there, sitting at her table eating her breakfast. Cai sat down next to her, only to be shot several death glares by nearby Slytherins. One opened their mouth, but Cai was quicker with his.
“Get over yourselves already; baseless separations are a joke and so are you for following them. Don't you have anything more important to worry about than what I do?” he fired at them, sounding angry for the first time in front of his friends.

“What? Pretty big words for a little punk.” one of the nearby Slytherins growled.

“Sorry, I'll use smaller ones next time.” Cai snapped. “How devoid is your own life that you have to focus on us?” he added before turning away. Luckily for him, the Slytherins shook their heads and turned away; teachers were watching.

“You're lucky teachers are here.” another one muttered.

“Sod off.” Cai replied over his shoulder. It would be best in the future if he did not sit at the Slytherin table... at least for awhile.

Cai shook his head and forced out a smile for his friends, who were staring at him in surprise.
“Sorry, just... ugh.” he closed his eyes for a moment. “Did you make your team Ella? You had to have. Sevix did. Going to be good matches” he smiled, trying to force a change of conversation. He didn't want to talk about it, not if he could help it. Inside, his heart was thundering with anger. Just... focus on the good news, that's what he needed to do.

His friends tried to ask him what that was about, so he shrugged and glanced at the offending students.
“I'm just sick of bullying idiots is all.” he said, his smile turning sheepish but not meeting his eyes. His eyes still held anger.

“So, yea. Did you make it?” he asked Ella again, feigning getting lost in excitement over the quidditch tryouts. She relented and said she had gotten in, making Cai smile a bit wider, his eyes softening a bit. “I knew you two would, you were brilliant. I'll cheer for both of you... when we play your house, I'll just wear both colors.” he joked... although, it wasn't a bad idea actually. Aside from it looking funny, which he did not mind. As he thought, he fidgeted with his hands beneath the table, turning over a coin in the them; he wasn't feeling hungry and so had not grabbed any food.

Ella's pale gaze fell on Sevix as he spoke up and suggested they wait until the morning to tell anything about what they had seen. She thought it was suspicious but didn't say anything. They'd just discovered a hidden shrine - and a massive one at that - to the deceased Dark Lord and he didn't want them to tell anyone? It didn't sit right with her. But Cai seemed agreeable to the idea and, besides, Sevix was correct in that they needed to get to their Common Rooms before they got detention for being out so late. Her father would kill her if she got detention. So the trio traipsed back to the castle and headed towards their respective dormitories. When Ella entered, all was quiet. It seemed that everyone else was in bed, including the other first year Slytherin students... Which was what Ella was happy to see. She snuck into her dorm and pulled off her robes and slipped into her pajamas before laying down in her four poster and falling asleep. The Malfoy girl didn't get much sleep; she woke up frequently, her mind replaying over what they had found in that secret room. None of that should be there she kept telling herself We should have told someone right away. Sevix was trying to hide something. She was sure that even Cai had noticed. But due to his agreeable nature, she knew that Cai wouldn't have argued too heavily against Sevix. After all, he was the one who had said they'd go talk to a teacher first thing in the morning. Ella couldn't shake the feeling that they should have told someone right away. The night passed slowly, with very little sleep in between periods of great wakefulness. When morning finally came, the Slytherin first year dressed in her robes, grabbed her school bag, and tucked her wand into her pocket before heading the common room to check the message board, where the quidditch try-out results were posted. There was a small crowd gathered around it and there were sounds of happiness and disappointment at the sight; she shoved her way through the small crowd so that she could see too and smiled at the sight of her name written neatly beneath the Chaser column. It was at the top. It seemed that she'd impressed that oaf, Matloc, with her aggressive playing. Good. He'd soon learn that it was a mistake to write her off as just an ordinary first year. With the knowledge that she was now on the Slytherin Quidditch team, Ella left the common room and headed up to breakfast.

When she got to the Great Hall, Cai and Sevix hadn't arrived yet so she settled down at her table and began to eat. No one bothered her. It seemed that now she had a place on the quidditch team, she was too important to mess with and no one wanted to risk the wrath of Matloc for messing with one of his new chasers. At any rate, Ella wasn't sitting there for too long before Cai and Sevix thumped down next to her; both appeared tired but in decent spirits. She had already heard that Sevix had made it as Seeker for Gryffindor. It was all over the school by this point and if he would stop associating with her, she was sure that he'd be quite popular. But none of them wanted their Houses to divide their friendship. Sure, they hadn't known each other very long but some friendships were forged quickly and couldn't be broken. She felt that their friendship was like that. Her family would not approve. Before Ella could even say 'good morning', Cai was already getting into it with an older Slytherin student, snapping, “Get over yourselves already; baseless separations are a joke and so are you for following them. Don't you have anything more important to worry about than what I do?” For the first time since she had met him... Cai actually sounded angry. What in the name of Merlin...? “What? Pretty big words for a little punk,” growled one of the other nearby Slytherins. Before Ella or Sevix could even think to snap back at him, Cai exploded again, “Sorry, I'll use smaller ones next time. How devoid is your own life that you have to focus on us?” The fair-haired Slytherin stared at her friend as he turned away from the antagonistic Slytherin upper-classman. Her face was emotionless, a smooth mask, but her hand clenched around the wand in her pocket, hoping that none of the upper classmen would try to hex Cai; she was good with spells but they all had years of experience on her and even if she managed to get a few good hexes in, they'd still do a lot of damage to her and her friends before teachers could intervene. Unseen behind her, the Gryffindor prefect Loki Beaumont was watching the scene unfold, arms crossed over his broad chest. Luckily for them all, the Slytherins shook their heads and turned away; teachers were watching after all. “You're lucky teachers are here,” muttered another one, turning back to his breakfast. “Sod off,” replied Cai. It would be best if he didn't sit at the Slytherin table anymore... At least for a little while.

Ella returned her gaze to her breakfast as Cai shook his head and smiled at them, saying, “Sorry, just... ugh. Did you make your team Ella? You had to have. Sevix did. Going to be good matches.” He was trying to force a change of conversation. He obviously didn't want to talk about his angry outburst towards the upperclassmen. Ella wasn't so willing to change the subject. "Cai, what was that about?" she asked him, pushing her plate away; she was no longer hungry. He shrugged and glanced over at the offending students, telling them, “I'm just sick of bullying idiots is all.” His smile turned sheepish but his eyes still held white-hot anger. She never would have expected such an outburst from the mild-mannered prankster. A sly, calculated revenge maybe but not an angry outburst. That didn't... Seem like him at all. Cai was quick to change the subject again, asking, “So, yea. Did you make it?” She wasn't sure she wanted to change the subject so quickly, especially since his outburst was so out of character, but she relented; now wasn't the time for such a discussion. "Yes," she told her friends, "I'm one of the new chasers." She felt a small spark of pride at the thought. She'd show them all. She was a Malfoy and woe to any who dared overlook her. Cai smiled wider, his eyes softening a little as he responded, “I knew you two would, you were brilliant. I'll cheer for both of you... when we play your house, I'll just wear both colors.” Ella smiled a little, still feeling that something was off about her friend. "We'd be able to find you in the crowd at least." He would certainly stand out. Individuality was great... Except when it got you hexed for being a traitor; most of the Gryffindor students treated any other Gryffindor who associated with Slytherin's a hard time... Which was part of the reason Cai and Sevix were treated so poorly. Hopefully, now that he was the new Seeker, Sevix - and by extension, Cai - would be treated better by their fellow housemates. At least, that was what she wished for her friends. "Come on, it's too crowded in here." Ella stood and headed out; the boys scrambled to get a few things to eat while they walked and hurried to catch up with her. When they were out of sight of the Great Hall, she stopped and turned to Cai. "Are you feeling alright? That wasn't like you at all and you still appear angry, even though you're trying to hide it." She wasn't about to let that go. Something was wrong, she could feel it. Once she figured out what it was, she was going to either let the conversation die or figure out how to make it right. And then after everything was okay with Cai, they could figure out which teacher to tell about the hidden room they had found beneath the castle.

Someone had to know.

The normally reserved Sevix was almost bursting with excitement, sleepiness and tiredness forgotten after learning he was the new Seeker for Gryffindor. It wasn’t only that that brought excitement to him, it was also the fact that this would surely change how he was viewed in the eyes of his own housemates, especially with the parallel that could be drawn from the fact that The Harry Potter had also become Seeker in his first year in Gryffindor house. That train of hopeful thought was soon proven to at least be somewhat correct, as many of those about the room started to crowd about and congratulate him on his position. Sevix, while used to attention, wasn’t used to positive attention like this, and so had no idea how to really respond to the sudden change of attitude towards him. So he just awkwardly started thanking people before Cai finally managed to drag him out of the common room and down towards breakfast.

The congratulations followed them through the halls, as apparently the news of his position on the team spread outside of Gryffindor already, but it tapered away eventually as they drew further and further away from the common room, and finally towards the great hall.

The pair found Ella pretty quickly, the hall wasn’t too filled up yet, so she was easy to spot sitting at the Slytherin table. The initial qualms the trio felt about sitting at the wrong table had mostly subsided, and without too much of a care, they approached Ella and sat with her; a small island of red among a growing sea of green. Sevix, having ignored the dark looks from the Slytherin at the table, immediately started to excitedly speak to Ella. “I got the Seeker position!” He tried to speak in a hushed voice, but his excitement defeated his attempt to keep his voice low, “Did you get onto-“ “Get over yourselves already; baseless separations are a joke and so are you for following them. Don't you have anything more important to worry about than what I do?” Sevix had stopped speaking and stared open mouthed at Cai as his friend spoke so harshly towards the others at the table. His expression only grew more surprised as Cai continued on back and forth a few times with the Slytherin student he was speaking too before they both suddenly ceased their words.

“Cai.. what….?” Sevix tried to speak, but words failed him at the sudden change Cai seemed to have undergone. He was still looking at the other boy as if Cai had grown a second head, but the surprise was slowly fading away, to be replaced with puzzled worry. Ella managed to ask what Sevix had attempted to ask, and Cai immediately tried to brush it off. Ella clearly had no intention of simply letting it go like that, and while Sevix didn’t either… they were sitting at the Slytherin table and he didn’t want to put his friend on the spot in front of a group of students that were clearly hostile towards them. Thankfully, Ella allowed it to slide as well for the moment after a second attempt on cai’s part to change the subject. She informed them that, yes, she did get a spot on the team, and Sevix brightened. “Of course.” He said, his initial excitement dimmed but not gone after what had just transpired. “You were fantastic at tryouts, there was no question to your gaining a position on your team.”

Then Cai, the only one not to make a team, excitedly said he would have to dress in the colours of both Gryffindor and Slytherin houses, so he could cheer on both his friends. Sevix laughed lightly, imagining Cai sitting between groups from the two houses looking absolutely ridiculous wearing the mismatched colours. The image vanished as Ella suggested they leave the hall. Sevix and Cai, neither having eaten anything yet, grabbed up some food straight from the Slytherin table before hurrying away under the glares of the Slytherin students.

As they headed out, Sevix was already starting to take small bites of whatever he managed to grab from the table. As soon as they were out of sight of the great hall, Ella rounded on Cai to once more try and have him explain what was wrong him. Sevix looked between the two for a moment while he finished chewing his mouthful of food. “I’m worried too, Ella, but we should really get to telling someone about that shrine we found...” Whatever was wrong with Cai was important too, but having very likely a death eater, or at least someone aspiring to be one, somewhere in the school terrified him much more than the fact that Cai was acting aggressively strange. “Perhaps we should find one of our Prefects and let them know, then we can… maybe visit madam pomfry to see if she knows what’s wrong with you.” He spoke to Cai for the last bit, hoping his friend would understand that he was indeed acting abnormally and they were just worried. However, neither had a chance to respond to Sevix, as the Gryffindor Prefect happened to approach them at that very moment… apparently overhearing at least some of what was said.

Cai nodded and smiled as he heard Ella had made the Slytherin Quidditch team; he was glad to hear she had made it. She could use the help with her house, just as Cai and Sevix could use the help with theirs. Sports were a good tool for getting jackasses to calm down and accept people. From the encounter this morning and the previous day, it was obvious both of their houses were filled with morons. People who were spiteful because stupid unwritten rules weren't followed, angry because someone was different in the most arbitrary way, stupid because... they were people.

Ella suggested bailing on the Great Hall and Cai could not agree more. Though he was trying to force a smile, his insides were churning. Anger was the chief emotion, threatening to flare up once more. The idea of pranking someone who wronged him wasn't in his mind; these jerks deserved more. It appeared his friends could sense this, as they had barely cleared the doors when Ella called him on his anger. Before Cai could reply though, Sevix spoke up; he was worried too but seemed more focused on the shrine they had found, giving Cai the out he needed. Sevix suggested finding a prefect or something, before mentioning seeing the nurse.

“I'm-” Cai began to mention as their prefect walked up, apparently hearing the tail of their conversation. Great... depending on what he had heard, this could go badly. Cai opted to go on the offensive, pushing the focus on the shrine for the eavesdropping prefect; it was rude of him to insert himself in their conversation like this. however, enough of that and the attention would be off him. He knew his friends cared, but that did nothing to quench the burning in his insides. “Well, I guess you're the one we're telling... we found something.” Cai began.

Cai began to explain what had happened, starting from the accidental discovery of the passage to the room that looked like a Death Eater's dream. He discussed what they had seen, and how they had marked the room; he omitted his shock from the necklace.
“And then we found ourselves in the forest... I left a Drooble's wrapper to mark the trapdoor. We were going to tell someone last night, but it was late. Plus that room... well, we weren't in any rush to go back. We can show you.”

The prefect did not look happy as he listened to their tale, though it likely was at the thought of the room and what it meant, not them for finding it. After all, aside from taking some time to tell people, they had done nothing wrong. He told them they needed to get a teacher, and told them to wait where they were. As he headed into the Great Hall to grab a teacher, Cai leaned back against the wall, enjoying the cold stone on his neck, which felt like it was burning. His heavy eyes closed for a moment before he opened them and looked at his friends. “I wonder who he is getting. Hopefully not someone who will just ignore us or say were scared little first years.” he noted, trying to overcome the silence. His hands were in his pockets, balled into fists but hidden from view.

They didn't have to wait long, as the prefect soon emerged with their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher... yea, that made sense. After all, there was likely nobody better at dealing with the Dark Arts, at least within Hogwarts.
“Mr Beaumont tells me you three discovered a room full of Dark Items. Please show me where you went into the room.” he said, his tone far more serious than it had been in their lessons; Loki nodded encouragingly to them, and so they set off.

It wasn't hard to find the right corridor, though finding the exact spot was a bit difficult. After all, when one falls through a wall and down a slide, the falling and the slide tended to dominate the memory. Luckily, between the three of them, they were fairly certain of the spot, pointing it out to the teacher. Mr Weasely pushed on the wall, it remained solid.

“It worked last night, I leaned on it.” Cai said, moving forward to demonstrate but stopping when Mr Weasely held up his hand to stop Cai. Their teacher moved his back to the wall and leaned against it; he did not fall. After a couple of seconds, he shot Loki a questioning look, a look Cai did not miss. Weasely was seeing if his assistant had any suggestions, but to Cai, the look meant Weasely thought them liars about the entire affair.

“Look, we're not lying! You must be doing it wrong! Or maybe it doesn't like you, I don't know! Why would we lie about this? Maybe you just don't know what you're doing!” Cai burst out angrily, yelling at their teacher. As he did so, his hands were at his sides, clenched into tight fists as he looked up into their teacher's face. Professor Weasely was quit e a bit taller than the eleven year old after all.

As he confronted the teacher, a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead; he was quite hot. As he glared, it was apparent his face was getting redder... as were his hands, which was odd as they were clenched so tight. Unknown to him, it was from the necklace imparting a gift to him: Ardens Furoreius, the burning anger curse. Any anger in Cai would just build up; growing and causing him to lash out at those around him who even did something that might mildly annoy him. The other unfortunate side effect was the anger literally would begin to burn inside them, heating them from the inside out. It was useful to make someone suffer physical and mental torture before the curse would claim them. Being as close as he was to the teacher, Weasely would be able to feel some of the heat radiating off of the young student.

As per usual, Loki went for his morning swim and then grabbed a bite to eat in the Great Hall; it was still nice out so he opted to take a stroll across the grounds while he ate a bagel before beginning his rounds. The castle was large, so until the first years could figure out the corridors and remember which steps to jump and what doors were actually walls and vice versa, he and the other prefects would be kept busy ushering the children to their classrooms. Loki had always thought that maybe it would be a good idea to give the students maps but then he remembered that with all the changing staircases and hidden passageways, it would be difficult to navigate the castle even with a map. Pity, that. It was as he was wondering the halls that he happened to hear the tail end of a conversation that involved something being wrong with someone. As Loki rounded the corner, he found that it was a conversation happening between the two Gryffindor students and the Slytherin girl. "Everything alright?" he asked, concern evident in his voice. The girl, Ella, looked between her two friends and then at the prefect, opening her mouth to say something only to have Caius cut her off with: “Well, I guess you're the one we're telling... we found something.” Loki's frown deepened as the first year explained about the accidental discovery of a passage to a room that looked to be a shrine to the late Dark Lord, filled with objects that certainly shouldn't have been there. Cai did all the talking, discussing what they had seen and ending with, “And then we found ourselves in the forest... I left a Drooble's wrapper to mark the trapdoor. We were going to tell someone last night, but it was late. Plus that room... well, we weren't in any rush to go back. We can show you.” The prefect saw the Slytherin girl cast a glance at her friend, as if he'd left something out, and Loki almost expected her to say something but she didn't. As for the room... Well, that was bad. Very bad. He wished they had said something last night, when they'd discovered it, but at least they had said something. "I'm going to go get a professor. Stay here." Loki disappeared into the Great Hall, leaving the trio alone.

As the prefect left, Cai leaned against the wall and closed his eyes for a second. Ella shared a look with Sevix. Something was wrong with Cai and he was the only one who didn't realize it; the Slytherin knew she needed to say something to the prefect when he returned. Their friend needed help. Cai looked over at her and Sevix, saying, “I wonder who he is getting. Hopefully not someone who will just ignore us or say were scared little first years.” Ella frowned. "I don't think that prefect would do that; he seems to genuinely care about the students. He's going to get someone to help us." It was becoming more and more obvious that something was wrong. Sevix fidgeted uncomfortably next to her. Yeah, something needed to be said but to someone who wasn't Cai; he didn't want to listen to them, he thought he was fine. However, before Ella could fully gather her thoughts, the prefect returned with their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Weasely. That made sense, of course, because who was better to show something dark like that shrine than someone trained to deal with it?

“Mr Beaumont tells me you three discovered a room full of Dark Items. Please show me where you went into the room,” said Professor Weasely; his tone was far more serious than it had been in their lessons. Loki nodded encouragingly at the trio and so they set off. The first years didn't seem to have any trouble locating the corridor, or what appeared to be the corridor, but it took them a second to find the right spot in which to get into the passageway. Between the three of them however they seemed to eventually come to a conclusion that they'd found the right spot and pointed it out to Bill. He pushed on the wall and Loki half expected him to fall through... But nothing happened. It appeared to be just a regular, solid wall. “It worked last night, I leaned on it,” Cai said, moving forward to demonstrate but Bill held up his hand to stop the first year. The professor moved his back to the wall and leaned against it but, like before, it remained solid. Weasely shot Loki a questioning look, clearly asking for a suggestion or two - the prefect wasn't trained like Weasely was but he was training to become an auror - and he turned a few thoughts around in his head for a second before opening his mouth to say something... Only to have Cai explode, “Look, we're not lying! You must be doing it wrong! Or maybe it doesn't like you, I don't know! Why would we lie about this? Maybe you just don't know what you're doing!” Ella and Sevix stared at their friend. Loki and Bill did the same. The kids hands were clenched at his sides and Loki saw a bead of sweat drip down his forehead. What in the name of Merlin was going on with this kid? He'd seemed so relaxed and down to earth when he'd first arrived here at the school. Was his face getting redder? Something was wrong. Bill frowned. Something was wrong, very wrong, with this kid... "We're going to the hospital wing. Now." Cai immediately puffed up. Loki could feel the heat rolling off the kid, it was like he was on fire. Before the first year could do anything else, Bill whipped his wand out and in a flash of light... Cai was paralyzed, frozen in place. Ella and Sevix let out yelps of shock. "Sorry kid. But you need help."

Loki pulled out his wand and with a wave, Cai was floating. Like a conductor, he maneuvered the paralyze kid down the hallway at a near jog, Bill, Ella, and Sevix following close behind. "What's going on? What are you doing?" cried Ella as they hurried to the hospital wing. "Your friend has been afflicted by a terrible curse. If we don't get him treated, he will literally burn up and die," responded Bill. Ella frowned as they ran. So something had been wrong! She and Sevix should've dragged him to the hospital wing the second they realized something was off. It must've been that damn necklace. It was the only thing he'd touched when they'd been in that hidden room. The group burst into the hospital wing, startling Madam Pomfrey, who immediately became cross with them. As Loki set the petrified Caius Tande on a hospital bed, Bill was quick to explain to her what was going on. Ella caught the phrase "Ardens Furoreius" and a couple of other things that she didn't understand. She'd need to go to the library later and look up this curse, which should be pretty simple provided that it wasn't located in the restricted section. Madam Pomfrey tried to shoo the Slytherin and Sevix out of the room but Ella told her "We're not going anywhere. Cai is our friend and we're staying here until he's better." Something in the young woman's voice seemed to get through to Madam Pomfrey and she only nodded and gestured towards a set of chairs near Cai's bed. They sat and she pulled a screen around him. Loki looked at the pair for a second before leaving the hospital wing to meet with Amelia; Madam Pomfrey promised to let him and Bill know when Cai was back to normal.

Sevix listened and silently watched the others while Cai explained what they had found last night. The prefect looked gravely concerned about the room, and he had every right too be. With a death eater about, anything horrible could happen… Hell, something was happening. Ever since they found that room, Cai had changed. It hadn’t exactly been noticeable during the night, but now… he was hardly in control of his anger.. the smallest things were setting him off. Something in that room had to have done something too him.

When Cai finished explaining the room, the prefect immediately left to get someone to help them deal with the situation, which left the trio to sit and wait for him to return. Cai moved over to lean against the wall and close his eyes. Sevix glanced over to Ella, as she looked too him, and both their expressions showed worry. Something was wrong with their friend, and it wasn’t likely to end well. “I really do not think anyone could ignore something like this, coming from a first year or not.” Sevix replied after Cai asked who it was the prefect might be getting. With how concerned Loki had seemed, he very much doubted the man would get someone who would not see that this could be a huge threat.

And, he was proven correct when the prefect returned with Professor Weasely. That made sense, he was likely to be one of the best to deal with the situation. Immediately the professor asked them to show him where the room entrance was, and so the three of them headed off in front of the professor and the prefect, making their way back to where they had found the room.

It didn’t take long to locate the corridor the room was in, though they did have to talk amongst themselves to figure out the exact point where the magical wall was. Eventually they agreed on the spot, and then pointed it out to the professor. Professor Weasely walked up, reached out… and nothing happened. He simply pressed his hand against an apparently solid wall. It had been fine last night, even after they had left, he had returned to find the entrance still open. Did his having returned to remove items cause the door to seal itself? He paled slightly at the thought. Not only would the room remain, whomever ‘owned’ it would likely not be hard pressed to figure out who had found it. He almost wanted to say something, but before he could fight past his need to keep his secrets, Cai started shouting.

Sevix stared wide eyed at Cai. His friend was tense, with his fists balled tightly and sweat starting to drip down his forehead. Then, from the corner of his eye, he saw Professor Weasely move for his wand. Before he could comprehend fully what was happening, the professor had immobilized Cai. Sevix and Ella both let out sounds of surprise, and both demanded, “What are you doing? You cannot cast spells on-“ Bill cut him off, explaining they were taking Cai to the hospital wing, and the reason behind it. Of course! How could he be so blind as not see such an obvious curse on his friend. Death eaters loved those torturous curses.

They were shortly in the hospital wing, where Cai was deposited on a bed and the problem was explained to Madame Pomfry. The woman nodded before turning her attention to the students. Before even attempting to help Cai, she tried to shoo Sevix and Ella from the room. Both of them refused, they were staying here until Cai was better, no ifs ands or buts. She sighed lightly, but let them stay, before speaking once more to Loki and and Professor Weasely, then got to work on helping Cai once the prefect and professor left.

As they sat and waited, Sevix and Ella spoke quietly to one another. Mostly they hoped Cai was going to be okay, but they also tried to figure out why the shrine entrance was closed now. They passingly talked about going to the library to read upon the curse that afflicted Cai. Eventually, Sevix drifted off to sleep. His tiredness was hitting hard now that he was sitting down and waiting. Talking to Ella had half helped keep him awake, but sleep had eventually claimed him and he didn’t wake until Ella prodded him. Cai was waking up.

Sevix, who had sunk quite far down in his chair while sleeping, shifted awkwardly to his usual proper posture. “Hey, Cai. Are you okay? How are you feeling?” He asked as Cai slowly sat up and slowly registered where he was.

Cai was burning with rage, doing the best he could to free himself while petrified; he was not strong enough to break such a stronger wizard's spell. That and his wand was not in his hand, so he could not use it to focus his magic. However, as was shown with young magical children, extreme emotion could cause magic to simply boil out. As they walked along, a few paintings were torn, and a couple of doors developed cracks.

When he was deposited into a bed in the medical wing, Madame Pomfrey used her wand to render him unconscious as well as petrified, so his magic wouldn't continue to spill out. Last thing they needed was for uncontrolled magic to interrupt the healing. This was a dark curse, but Madame Pomfrey had seen her fair share, especially in the battle. She was not able to destroy the curse, but was able to trap it in Cai's left shoe, which she tossed in the nearby fireplace. It seemed not a moment too soon as the shoe exploded violently, sending a plume of flame up the chimney.

She removed his petrification next, allowing him to slump into a resting position from his previous stiff as a board. “He'll wake up on his own, his body needs rest.” she said, leaving no doubt she thought they were going to interrupt Cai's resting. However, her attention was pulled away by another student who entered the medical wing.

It took some time, but eventually Cai stirred. It took him a moment to get his bearings, as his brain was fatigued from the curse. He could hear someone said something, but it took a moment before he could register it was his friend.
“So... I'm gonna assume that wasn't a bad dream.” he finally said, sitting upright against the pillow on his bed. “What... what happened? Was it that necklace? Did I hurt anyone?” he added the last question quietly. After starting to go off on the teacher, his mind was a bit of a blank, just anger and heat... it could have been bad.

Luckily, his friends assured him that he hadn't hurt anyone, putting his tired mind at ease. They chatted for a bit, before Madame Pomfrey shooed his friends away, insisting at wand point that he rest. Cai was given a potion for some dreamless sleep, and spent the weekend out cold.

~~~~~
Soon enough, it was the morning of the first Quidditch match: Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor. Cai was back to one hundred percent, and was looking forward to rooting for Sevix's first match. For the last couple of days, Cai had been trying to keep Sevix busy, so he couldn't think too much about the match and potentially get nervous. They'd knocked out their homework and now had all day to do the match, and celebrate the victory.
When it was brought up during a combo of pep rally and team meeting in the common room that winning was the most important thing, Cai noted that having fun was the most important thing. The glares he earned from most of the house for that remark caused him to say “Or not...” and return to his book. If they didn't want to hear from other people, this meeting slash pep rally should not have occurred.
Cai woke up early and snuck down to the Great Hall, putting up banners for each house. They were hand-made and painted signs, but he still thought they were a nice touch. He finished just in time to rush back upstairs to get dressed and rouse Sevix.
“Rise and shine!” Cai said happily as he dug into his chest. Out of it he pulled a top hat that had Gryffindor colors on one side, complete with a small roaring lion, and Hufflepuff on the other with a snarling Badger. He had made the decision to always root for both teams, if he could. After all, it was just a game.
Ella sat upright, coming out of a doze, when she heard Cai move. Sevix was the first to ask if their friend was okay. Cai said, “So... I'm gonna assume that wasn't a bad dream.” The Slytherin shook her head. "No, it wasn't a dream." She explained to him how Madam Pomfrey had trapped the curse in his shoe and thrown it into the fire, which had then exploded; it seemed as though they'd gotten the first year into the hospital wing just in time. Ella hated to think what might have happened if they hadn't. Should've told someone about that room last night, maybe then we could've saved Cai sooner... “What... what happened? Was it that necklace? Did I hurt anyone?” asked Cai, the last part a bit quieter. "It was the only thing you touched, so that must have been what it was. Professor Weasley explained that it was a curse that was literally causing you to burn up from the inside out with your anger. You could have died." She moved her chair closer to the side of his bed. "You didn't hurt anyone but you could have, if Loki hadn't heard us talking and got Bill to check out the room. Professor Weasley was the one who realized that something was really wrong and that we needed to get you help." They needed to find some way to thank him. At least he'd listened to them as well as helped them save Cai... And hadn't taken any points away, which was nice. It would be hard to explain to the rest of their housemates where the points had gone without sounding totally crazy. She and Sevix stayed with Cai for a little while, talking about anything that came to mind just to keep Cai's mind off of what had happened. He was such a happy-go-lucky carefree person that the knowledge that he could have seriously hurt someone would bother him if they didn't keep him focused on something else. After a while, however, Madam Pomfrey shooed the two healthy first years out of the hospital wing at wand point, insisting that Cai needed to rest. Not wanting to get hexed by the resident healer, Sevix and Ella left the hospital wing and went to their own dormitories to do homework or whatever it was they felt like doing; the fair-haired female knew that Sevix was probably feeling pretty lonely without Cai for company.
A few days after the incident with Cai and the room that no longer seemed to exist, it was time for the first quidditch match of the season. It was Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff and it promised to be a good game. Ella was just a little jealous that it wasn't Slytherin versus Gryffindor, just so that she could see how Sevix played against a friend - and also to win Slytherin a game against their rivals - but she was happy that Sevix got to play. The Seeker was the most coveted position and he had performed so well at tryouts that she couldn't wait to see what he could do in a real game. The morning of the game, Ella woke and bathed, dressing in the customary uniform that all students were expected to wear before adorning a crimson and gold Gryffindor scarf and painting the same colors on her face. She got many looks from her fellow housemates as she passed through the common rooms and headed towards the great hall for breakfast but she ignored them. By the time she got there, Sevix and Cai were at their table. Cai, in typical fashion, was split in half to support both teams; he was obviously not the competitive type that everyone else was. Hufflepuff, several tables over, was a bright, eye-watering yellow that made Ella's eyes hurt to look at. Slytherin was likewise sporting yellow to support Hufflepuff because of course hell would have to freeze over before they would allow themselves to root for Gryffindor. Ravenclaw's table was filled with a smattering yellow and black and crimson and gold; they were supporting both teams because they didn't really care who won. It would become important later in the season who rooted for who but for now, anyone could root for whoever they wanted. It was the first game of the season and the excitement was almost tangible. The professors weren't sporting any outward signs of support to any specific team but Ella was pretty sure that she saw the headmistress sporting a Gryffindor pin and Professor Flitwick a Hufflepuff pin. They might not outwardly show their support but all of the teachers supported one team or another. Ella sat down next to the boys and said, "I like the look, Cai, it's good on you. Are you excited Sevix?" She could see Loki down the table a ways, laughing and joking with other members of the teams.
Ella explained to Cai all that needed to be explained, so Sevix had sat there, nodding lightly in agreement with what she was saying. A dark thought crossed his mind though, I touched a lot of stuff down there… what if something cursed me too? He didn’t feel any different. He was still of sound mind and body so he could only assume he got lucky. Or none of it was intended to harm the heir.
Not wanting to worry about anything down that line of thought, Sevix pushed it to the back of his mind for now and started talking with the other two until he and Ella were kicked out by Madame Pomfry; Cai still needed rest and so they had to go. He went willingly, telling Cai to “Get all the rest you need.” Before he left with Ella. The two of them walked together a bit before separating and heading back to their own dorms. It was still pretty early, but Sevix remained in the common room for the rest of the day. He sat there alone with Max on his lap until it was time for bed and headed up to sleep.
“Rise and Shine!” Sevix jerked awake to Cai excitedly waking him up. He sat up slowly and tried to coax Max back onto the bed, but Cai had scared him sufficiently enough to keep him under the bed for awhile. He was about to ask why Cai was so excited but figured it out quick enough as his friend pulled his quidditch robes from his chest. Sevix couldn’t help but let a smile come to his face. He knew Cai had been working on them, but he hadn’t thought they’d be so outrageous. “You should definitely see if you can get that enchanted to switch colours depending on what teams are playing. That way, you will not have to make a separate robe for each of the different matches that can happen.” Sevix suggested as he got himself out of bed and ready for the coming match. He adorned his Quidditch uniform and tried not to think too much about the nerves that were already causing a tightening in his chest. He hid the nerves though, have to keep those at bay and try to be excited.
They shortly headed down to breakfast, beating Ella to the hall so they sat at Gryffindor table. They trio had silently agreed they would sit with whomever had arrived to meals first. Most often he and Cai arrived first, and he had assumed it may be because the Slytherin’s were much more against them joining Ella than the Gryffindor’s were against Ella joining them.
As they headed to the end of the table, Sevix’ name was called out. Sevix jumped and turned towards the voice. A group of the Gryffindor teammates were sitting together, and one of them spoke up, asking him to join them. He stared at them, wide eyed, unsure and shy. Eventually, the shyness won over and he shook his head before turning to quickly catch up to Cai; who had continued on in apparently unawareness to the fact that Sevix had been stopped.
They hardly sat down before Ella entered the hall, and seeing them, started towards them with a confident stride. She wore about her neck a Gryffindor scarf and face paint. "I like the look, Cai, it's good on you. Are you excited Sevix?" Sevix took a small breath, to try and kill his nerves a bit. “Y-yes.” He was excited, he knew he was but the nerves were killing him. “I just hope that I do not let everyone down…” He said as he glanced down the table at his teammates laughing and joking together at the other end of the table.
Instantly, both Ella and Cai tell him he’ll have nothing to worry about. He did fantastic at the tryouts and the couple practices they had done, he had no reason to be worried. His nerves died somewhat as a smile came to his face. “Thanks guys.” He knew they would support him, but hearing them say as such went a long way to help.
After they had finished eating, the trio headed outside. They had a short amount of time before the game, but Sevix had to meet up with his teammates beforehand. Ella and Cai wished him luck as he left them and headed off to his teams prep room. Most of the rest of the team was already there, and Sevix was glad he wasn’t the last to show up. They still had a little while but they needed to get their game plans down packed before they headed out to the pitch. A couple of the others greeted him on his arrival, though most just kind of glanced at him before going back to what they were talking about amongst themselves. Thankfully, the rest of those missing arrived just after he did so there was no time for him to stand around awkwardly. Loki immediately got the attention of the team now that they were all there and they went over the game plan. Mostly it was just telling them what they already knew, but there was a bit of confidence building and encouragement. They would all do great out there; He believed in them; and even though it was the first game of the year, they would show the crowd they were ready for anything thrown at them. The team cheered heartily, Sevix even joined in, though he was quite toned down from the rest of the team.
Everyone then went to get their brooms, the game would begin shortly and they had to be out and waiting. Sevix headed to where his broom would be waiting, and stopped short of reaching out for it. The school broom he had been assigned was no where to be seen. Instead, where his should have been, was a nimbus. He was dumbfounded for a few moments, until told to hurry it up. So he just quickly grabbed it then caught up to the others. While he wondered where it had come from, he was glad to have it. It would certainly perform a lot better than the school broom he had been using.
Cai was taking in the rest of the houses as they sat down to eat; as expected, Slythering was decked out in Hufflepuff colors. They really did hate Gryffindor... and none of these students had a reason for that hatred. Why exactly everyone was so rigid on tradition was beyond Cai, but he knew better than to worry about it at a time like this. Sevix needed him more than the houses did, and his own curiosity was not reason enough to not be there for Sevix.
Ella came over to their table, decorated in Gryffindor colors, making Cai smile. She complimented his colors, saying it was a good look. It seemed appropriate to him, supporting everyone in the game. After all, it was just a game. Sevix was of course getting his full support, but that had nothing to do with the colors he was wearing, and his friends knew that. When Sevix mentioned he was hoping not to let everyone down, Ella and Cai jumped on the chance to reassure him, reminding him of the tryouts and not stopping their support until he was smiling.
Soon enough, it was close enough to game time that the Gryffindor team left to go to the locker rooms, so Ella and Cai decided to head to the stands to get good seats.
“I hope he's okay, he was good at tryouts, and it is just a game-” Cai said to Ella, only to be cut off by a scoff from behind them; older students not believing their ears. “Madame Pomfrey can get you something for that cough.” Cai said, turning around and offering the advice with sincere smile before turning back to Ella and continuing, “but yea, just a game. He should have fun with it.”
As most everyone was grabbing some more food, he and Ella were able to get great seats, right by the announcer's booth at midfield.
“They should sell cotton candy or something.” Cai mused, earning a look from Ella. “It's a candy. At muggle sporting events, they sell candies and food and such. Junk food you don't eat normally. Well, that and lots of beer... I doubt we'll see that here.” he chuckled. His parents had taken him to a sports match or two, and he remembered hammered adults fighting everywhere, including the snack bars and bathrooms. It wasn't that he was still hungry after eating breakfast, it was more of an atmosphere thing. Maybe next time he'd bring his own snacks and candies; a task that would be much easier if first years could visit Hogsmeade.
~~~~~~~~~

Back in the Hufflepuff locker rooms, Amelia was standing in front of her team and a blackboard. “Okay, first game of the season, time to shake the rust and show why we'll be winning the cup this year.” she said encouragingly. “We've studied the team, and again, be aware of the new seeker, he's the wildcard we have not played against yet. Word is he is good. Unfortunately for them, we will be better. Let's go win this!” With a cheer, her team flooded out onto the pitch, taking a warmup lap around the stadium before heading to midfield; she had timed their entrance perfectly with the announcer calling out “First out of the gate, here is your Hufflepuff house team!”

She watched like a hawk as Gryffindor poured out of the their locker room to take their own lap; she could have sworn Loki winked at her as they passed, causing her to smile momentarily before rolling her eyes in case her teammates were watching. When the Gryffindors setlled, Madame Hooch instructed the captains to shake hands.
“Good luck Loki, time for some fun.” she smiled mischievously as she shook his hand. She was kind and she was a Hufflepuff, but she was captain of her team for a reason. She expected nothing less of Loki either.

“Alright, positions!” Madame Hooch called out; the keepers raced into position and everyone rose into the air to begin the match. When everyone was ready, Madame Hooch tossed the quaffle to begin the match. It was on the fingers of a Gryffindor chaser when Amelia shot by and snagged it with a call of “I'll be taking this!”

The match was on. Amelia shot forward, using the surprise of the move to get ahead of Gryffindor defenders, and was soon racing towards a one on one with Loki. The look on his face told her that he was not taken by surprise and was ready for this. In fact, he looked slightly calm... and she found out why when a bludger knocked the quaffle out of her hand without touching her. A quick recovery by Gryffindor had the ball heading the other way in no time. Clever, he knew she would shoot forward like that, and even more impressive was the beater who knocked the quaffle away without knocking her off her broom. It was going to be a good match.

An understatement to be sure. Both teams were playing their hearts out as if this was a cup match; they both wanted to come out strong and show the others teams that they should be very afraid. Luckily, her own keeper (barely) blocked the shot and the ball was theirs again. The three Hufflepuff chasers were passing the ball so quick it seemed they were afraid it was going to scald them. Amelia shot forward, only to fake a shot and actually pass the quaffle, faking out Loki and earning them a point. Gryffindor answered with a quick score of their own, and it was once again Amelia versus Loki. This time, no bludger came, but Loki managed to block the shot and kick it to his own teammate in one smooth move.
“Looks like you've been practicing.” Amelia laughed before tearing back up the pitch.

Quickly, it was proving to be an even affair, though a lot of the action was taking place with Gryffindor on defense and Hufflepuff attacking. Hufflepuff seemed to have the better chasers, but Gryffindor had the better beaters and keeper. All in all, the action stayed on the Gryffindor side more often than not, but the score didn't reflect it as it stayed close. Every time someone beat Loki, a Gryffindor chaser would beat Hufflepuff's keeper.

They needed to have their seeker win it for them at this rate. While Amelia trusted her seeker, she was not going to make the job harder, resolving to attack even harder. A Gryffindor chaser, Boone, was hurtling towards the Hufflepuff side when he had to barrel roll to avoid a bludger. As he was upside down, Amelia shot in, grabbing the quaffle and nearly falling from her broom in the process. With only one leg on her broom, she hurtled towards Loki. As she neared, she tossed the quaffle over her should to one of her fellow chasers and swung back onto her broom in time to catch the pass back and toss the quaffle at the hoop...

“That is another point for Hufflepuff. The score is 50 to 40, Hufflepuff winning.” came the announcer.

“I hate to be mean, but this guy is boring.” Cai whispered to Ella. Either the announcer needed a shot of caffeine or he needed a charisma transplant. Apparently the announcer, some staff member he did not know, heard him and shot him a dirty look before returning to the action. “Oops.” Cai said in a small voice.

“I hope he's okay, he was good at tryouts, and it is just a game-” began Cai. Before Ella could try to explain that to most witches and wizards, Quidditch was more than just a game, an older student beat her to the punch by scoffing. True to fashion, Cai turned to the older students and said, “Madame Pomfrey can get you something for that cough" before smiling and turning back to Ella, who simply shook her head as he continued, "but yea, just a game. He should have fun with it.” Sevix had done remarkably well at tryouts... "I'm sure he'll be fine, he blew away the competition at tryouts and from what I've been hearing, Loki is one of the best Keepers since Oliver Wood. It will probably be a very good match." At another time, she would need to try and talk to him about being a bit more sensitive to people's love of the sport. Aside from Gryffindor and Slytherin hating each other - and the fact that Slytherin was just generally unfriendly towards everyone because they thought they were better than everyone else - the rest of the houses had a very healthy rivalry when it came to the sport and healthy competition was good for everyone. Ella only grabbed a bagel and some cream cheese before she and Cai headed towards the Pitch to grab their seats. They were one of the few that had left early to get good seats, so they managed to get really good ones at midfield by the announcer's booth. As they settled in, Cai said, “They should sell cotton candy or something.” Cotton Candy? What is that? Without her having to ask, he explained, “It's a candy. At muggle sporting events, they sell candies and food and such. Junk food you don't eat normally. Well, that and lots of beer... I doubt we'll see that here.” Well, the junk food sounded like fun. As far as Ella remembered, they sold things like that at professional sporting events but she doubted the school would do anything like that. And usually the students were too busy screaming and cheering at the players to want to eat anything. Regardless of that, Ella was sure that Cai was going to be bringing his own snacks next time.

Loki woke early and took his usual swim in the lake, though he did two more laps than usual; his nerves were strung tight as violin strings. The first game of the season was always very stressful, as it usually set the mood for the rest of the season. This game was stressful for more reasons than just that, however… It was stressful because he was facing a team that was almost entirely made up of seasoned quidditch players and his team had quite a few rookies on it. It would be the first test of his new team and especially his new Seeker. Sevix had a lot of promise… Hopefully he would do as well today as he had at tryouts. It was also stressful because he was facing off against Amelia, who was one of the best chasers Hufflepuff had seen in a long time. If he lost this game to her, she might think he’d let Hufflepuff win, which would result in a fight… He didn’t want to fight with her. They had to win. After his swim, Loki returned to the dormitory to gather up his robes before showering, dressing, and heading down to the Great Hall.

He joined his friends in the middle of the table, please to see that they were extremely excited for the first match. Ravenclaw was sporting Gryffindor colors and Slytherin was dressed in Hufflepuff colors and, to Loki’s amusement, Cai was dressed in both Gryffindor and Hufflepuff colors. Clearly this kid didn’t feel the same way about Quidditch as most other wizarding kids did but that was fine; they needed more people like Caius Tande in the world. “We’re gonna smash Hufflepuff!” said Tom, grinning through a mouthful of sausages. “That new seeker is going to guarantee it,” said Damien. Loki smiled and shook his head, ”Come on guys, it’s just the first game. It’ll be great if we win but lets not put too much pressure on the new kids; we don’t want to psych them out before the game even starts.” He was worried that Sevix might hear them and become more nervous than he probably already was. At least he had his friends to support him; the prefect had just spotted the Malfoy girl at their table, dressed in Gryffindor colors. That had to be a miracle in and of itself. It seemed that not all Slytherins were the same afterall. It made Loki smile.

After breakfast, the Captain and the rest of the team made their way to the Quidditch pitch and the locker rooms, where they pulled on their robes and gathered their brooms. ”Alright guys, first game of the season. Time to show Hufflepuff and the rest of the school what Gryffindor is made of; we’ve trained hard and studied their techniques, we can beat them! Are you guys ready?” They all cheered and headed down the tunnel that would open up to the field. Loki should have led the way down but he waited just inside to watch Sevix discover his new broom, which was a Nimbus. It wasn’t a current model but at least it was new enough to not disintegrate under the force the kid had put on the last broom. The Captain smiled and headed down the tunnel, emerging at the front of his team and waiting for the signal. They mounted their brooms just as the announcer called, “First out of the gate, here is your Hufflepuff house team!” The Hufflepuff team emerged and zipped around the pitch, cheers rippling through the air. ”And now, Gryffindor!” Blurs of crimson and gold zipped across the field for a warm up lap and Loki winked at Amelia as he passed her before settling on the other side. He and Amelia were directly across from each other, as they were the team Captains, and Hooch instructed them to shake hands. “Good luck Loki, time for some fun.” Her smile was mischievous. Loki grinned back, ”Hope you’re ready for a challenge, Amelia.” They were both team captains for a reason and neither was about to go down without a fight.

“Alright, positions!” yelled Madame Hooch; Loki kicked off and raised towards the goals he was supposed to protect. And then quaffle was in play… Amelia snatched it from one of the Gryffindor chasers almost immediately and raced down the field towards Loki, who was not surprised by the move she had just made. Before she could attempt to score any points, however, a bludger knocked the quaffle out of her hand into the waiting hands of a Gryffindor chaser, who headed towards the opposite end of the field. Having played Amelia before, he’d been expecting her to shoot forward like she had and had prepared for such a move; he was just lucky to have a beater talented enough to knock the quaffle out of her hand without hurting her. The crowd was going wild as both teams played their hearts out; it was a good game, tough to be sure. The Hufflepuff keeper barely blocked the shot and then the ball was in Hufflepuff’s possession again; they were passing the quaffle so fast that it was like the muggle game hot potato. Amelia took possession as made the shot, faking out and managing to score. Damn... Gryffindor was quick to score in retaliation and then it was Amelia versus Loki again. When she attempted to score, Loki blocked it and kicked it to a waiting teammate in one smooth move. “Looks like you've been practicing,” laughed Amelia before racing down the pitch. The game proved to be difficult, both teams equally matched. Gryffindor could have won by this point but Loki had told Sevix to wait to catch the snitch until after they were up about twenty points, so their new seeker was circling the pitch high above the rest of the action. Hufflepuff had great chasers but their keeper wasn’t very good whereas Gryffindor had great beaters and Loki himself was one of the best keepers since Oliver Wood. The action stayed closer to Gryffindor’s side of the field than Hufflepuff’s but the score didn’t reflect that; every time someone managed to score on Loki, one of his chasers scored on Hufflepuff.

Andrew Boone, a Gryffindor chaser, was hurtling towards the Hufflepuff side and had to barrel roll to avoid a bludger, which was when Amelia took the opportunity to grab the quaffle from him; she nearly fell from her broom in the process and with only one leg on her broom, she hurtled towards Loki. As she closed in, she tossed the quaffle over her shoulder to one of her fellow chasers and swung back onto her broom just in time to catch the pass back and toss the quaffle at the hoop… Loki shot forward to block it and missed. ”That is another point for Hufflepuff. The score is 50 to 40, Hufflepuff winning.” God I hate his announcing… Loki shook his head. He needed to focus, he was off his game and he knew it. There was no way they should’ve gotten so many points already. The prefect gripped the broom and focused, looking up towards the seeker circling the pitch. Just two more ten point goals and Sevix could catch the snitch and end this game. Jessica Finch, a Hufflepuff chaser heaved the quaffle towards one of the hoops and Loki shot forward, spinning and using the tail of his broom to knock it halfway across the field. Boone caught it and shot forward to score another goal for Gryffindor.

“I hate to be mean, but this guy is boring,” Cai whispered to Ella, who nodded in agreement. Someone must have heard what he had said and gave him a dirty look before returning to the game. “Oops.” Ella looked at the staff member for a second before telling her friend, ”Why don’t you talk to Professor Flitwick. Maybe you could do the announcing, I’m sure you would be amazing at it.” Cai had a big personality and she had a feeling that he would be very similar to the announcer before the war, Lee Jordan. ”Go Sevix!” she cheered as he suddenly dove towards the ground, the Hufflepuff seeker hot on his heels. He must have spotted the golden snitch, which was worth 150 points and would guarantee Gryffindor’s win in this match. The crowd was screaming for their preferred seeker. Ella cheered as loud as she could for Sevix. It would do him good to win for Gryffindor.

The game was not quite progressing as he had thought it would. Sevix was so sure of Loki, because the man was so sure of himself, that he had almost thought not a single point would be scored against them; but the first score had been on Gryffindor and after a quick retaliation, a pattern for the game was set. That was fine, as long as Hufflepuff didn’t get too far ahead. Loki had told him not to grab the snitch until Gryffindor was at least 20 points ahead, but as the game progressed, with the score tying up after ever point earned, Sevix was pretty sure it was getting time to ignore what he had been told. Afterall, like a bird who found it’s prey, Sevix knew exactly where the snitch was since the moment it left the trunk.

”That is another point for Hufflepuff. The score is 50 to 40, Hufflepuff winning.” The announcer spoke, without hardly a hint of charisma in his voice at all. I have never heard such a monotonous announcer before. He idly thought as he slowly circled high above the game, trying to make it look as though he simply had no idea where the snitch could possibly be. Suddenly, a small quite miss-able motion was made by Loki. Sevix only noticed because the Snitch passed just a few feet behind the captain at that exact moment. He understood immediately though, time to go for the snitch. He waited only a few precious seconds before he changed grip on the broom and suddenly dived down toward the field at tremendous speeds. Half a second later, the other seeker who had been none to far away, was hot on his heels.

He had the advantage at least, the other seeker as of yet likely did not know where the snitch was, only that Sevix himself had found it. That was fine, Just have to get a bit of distance before I really go in for it. So, Sevix dove straight into a knot of players trying to get the quaffle. Had he not had the practice he’d had before starting at Hogwarts, he most definitely would have crashed into someone, but with hours of practice under his belt, he easily avoided all of them and the quaffle completely. The other seeker, not wanting to risk smashing into someone had to swerve around them, and that was all Sevix needed. He rushed after the Snitch, very quickly catching up to the thing that now seemed to realize it was being chased and was now trying to bolt away.

The hufflepuff seeker was still after him, but a good few meters away as the snitch led them on a merry chase through the skies. It took them perilously close to the bludgers, other players, the ground and even the crowd. At one point, Sevix blasted by Ella, Cai and the announcer, barely more than a couple feet above their heads. The wind on his heels kicked up scarves and hoods, and caused tuques to go flying off people’s heads. The Hufflepuff seeker passed by moments later, though he remained somewhat higher, not wanting to risk getting too close and hitting anyone accidently.

The chase went on for what seemed like countless minutes, but the distance was closing, sevix was catching up to the snitch while the hufflepuff seeker tried desperately to close the slowly widening gap. Just a little bit more…! Sevix was reaching for the snitch when suddenly it brought him back into the thick of things. He was heading straight for a knot of players the snitch easily passed through but he could do no such thing. So, he launched himself off his broom, jumping over the players as his broom zipped under them. A collective gasp rocked the stands as he did a single flip through the air before he landed on his broom as though it were meant for surfing. The gameplay had momentarily stopped in the knot of people he had jumped but that was fine, as he stood there, surfing his broom to a gradual stop while holding the snitch up high.

Cheers and wild clapping erupted from the stands as people jumped to their feet. Even the odd Slytherin found themselves overwhelmed into the moment and had stood to clap and cheer before being quickly shushed and glared at by those around them. Sevix paid no attention to them though, he was looking straight at his friends, wearing the hugest smile on his face until he was engulfed by his teammates, which almost knocked him off his precarious position upon his broom.

"The snitch has been caught, Gryffindor wins!"

Amelia was fighting her hardest, but it might not be enough. Loki was an excellent keeper, and though the Hufflepuff Chasers were great, they were not breaking away enough. Gryffindor had the better Seeker from what Amelia could see; he had an air about of him of biding his time, not actively seeking the snitch. It wasn't too obvious, but to her trained eye, the kid was waiting. The only reason he'd do that is if Loki told him to wait until were ahead by a certain amount. Points mattered over the year, and Amelia knew it didn't hurt to start hoarding them early.

She had been unsure of her own seeker, and so had not bothered with such a command. All she and her chasers needed to do was keep the score close enough until her seeker found the snitch first. Getting enough points to cause Gryffindor to pull a Krum was not likely with Loki in the game.

Just two more ten point goals and Sevix could catch the snitch and end this game. Jessica Finch, a Hufflepuff chaser heaved the quaffle towards one of the hoops and Loki shot forward, spinning and using the tail of his broom to knock it halfway across the field. She let her fellow Chasers lunge after Boone and the quaffle, slowing just enough to give a handsign to her beaters and seeker; it told her Beaters to work with her Seeker to box out the opposing Seeker. The downside to this was leaving the opposing Chasers open, but she knew where their focus had to be. Sure enough, Sevix shot off, and she knew it was time for him to get the snitch.

Crap.

~~~~~~~~~~
“Really? You think I'd be-” Cai began to ask, genuinely sounding surprised that she though he'd be good at being an announcer, but getting distracted as the seekers shot off, with Sevix easily in the lead.
~~~~~~~~~~

Sevix was good, she couldn't deny it. Both teams were getting distracted by the Seeker battle, and Amelia was searching for anyway to disrupt Sevix... if she had the quaffle, an errant pass could be disrupting enough. However, she didn't have it, and so shot into a group scuffling for the ball with most of their attention on the seekers. Amelia flew into the thick of it and forced the quaffle away just as Sevix was jumping over the group... her heart stopped, afraid that he would crash. She could toss the quaffle, but winning was not as important as someone's life. She was a Hufflepuff after all, not exactly known for being ruthless.

It took a couple of moments after Sevix landed for her heart to start beating again. What a foolish, foolish choice... yea it worked out, but that was still stupidly dangerous... he needed to learn not to take such dangerous risks. She might ask Loki to talk to him later, as she was not to spoil the first year's big moment.

~~~~~~~~
“Go Sevix!” Cai yelled and cheered before Sevix disappeared into a ring of his teammates. “So... anyone else's heart stop? That was too much.” he said to Ella, relief clear on his face. That flip was incredibly dangerous, and Cai's mind instantly went to a bad place when Sevix was flipping through the air. Not something he liked in the slightest, though he would not mention it to Sevix and ruin his big day.
While the Gryffindor team went to the locker room to discuss the match, shower and change, Cai heard the rest of his house talking about a casual party. “Ella, you should totally come.” Cai said. Ella explained how it likely wasn't a good idea, but Cai just smiled bigger. “Yea, they might all get mad... but not if Sevix brings you in with him. He's their sports hero right now, he can do pretty much anything.” Cai suggested with a smile. It was true, in the fervor after a win, especially one like that, the hero of the game could do no wrong in the eyes of the house.
As he explained his idea to her, he heard some older Gryffindors talking about going to the kitchen to get food. “I'm going to go help, can't hurt to know where the kitchens are.” Cai said with a smile. “Meet you two back in the common room.” he added, taking off after the older students. They began to shoot him down quickly, until he said he wanted to help them carry everything. Not out of kindness, but rather out of the offer of a free pack mule, they begrudgingly let Cai accompany them. Cai didn't care why they brought him along, and knew it was not out of kindness, but the reward was going to be worth it.
House elves... yea, he should have expected that, but it still surprised him to see so many elves working their tiny little butts off in the kitchens. A fair few wore hand knitted items like hats and sweaters, while the rest wore tea towels. From what he knew of elves, the clothed ones should be shunned... but they all seemed to work flawlessly... interesting. Cai was snapped out of watching as a tray of sweets was pushed hard into his chest, making him stumble back for a couple of steps. Several more trays were stacked, to the point where Cai could not see over them; it was then that the older students sent him on ahead. Cai had to walk sideways to see where he was going, and nearly dropped the trays several times. In fact, he could have sworn he saw one tray slip over only to right itself... maybe one of the ghosts? Or a teacher who was hiding but helping?
~~~~~~~~~~

Amelia was relaxing within a hidden passage behind a tapestry, grabbing a few moments to give Loki a congratulatory kiss; after all, he had a party to go to, so they had to be both hidden and quick. As they broke off, they saw one of the first years, Cai, walking by with arms loaded with booty from the kitchen. The poor boy was carrying enough trays that he had to walk sideways to see, and nearly dropped it... Loki moved quick, stabilizing the trays with some silent wandwork. “Such a hero.” Amelia whispered, giving him another kiss and smiling. “Go celebrate, Tiger.” she grinned, lightly pushing him out of the tapestry; she knew he wanted to break up this moment as little as she did.

~~~~~~~~~~~
This line of thought kept him so occupied that he failed to realize that he had made it to the Fat Lady. He gave the password... and then realized he could not climb up into the portrait hole with all the stuff he was carrying. “Um... little help?” he called out around the tray. Within seconds, the rest of his house had grabbed all the trays... had they been waiting for him? By the time he realized he was empty handed, he saw the portrait closing, and had to jump into the common room.
Somebody had decorated very quickly, putting up some large Gryffindor banners around the room. The trays of food were set up around the room and were being pilfered quite quickly. “Didn't everyone just have breakfast?” Cai asked aloud to nobody in particular.
