Looks :
Zeresh is a short, slender woman with pale gray eyes that reflect all of the colors of the ocean; a torrent of wavy, turquoise-green hair; and a pair of spiny, flexible, ocean-blue wings like the fins of flying fish. The members of her tribe don’t have fish tails, as the mermaids do; instead, those shoulder-fins are a powerful aid in swimming and diving.

Who are you? :
A warrior. An envoy.

What are you? :
A Nereid, a nymph of the sea.

They call you :
Zeresh Halcyone. Zeresh the Emissary.

D.O.B/Age :
Birthday, February 19. She is probably around 175 years old, but if asked, she may be vague about this. Some tribes of the sea-folk are long-lived, and in their world, time goes by like a fantasy. She looks 25.

What's your story? :
Zeresh was born and raised near the island of Sirenia Cove, off the southwest coast of the mainland. She is of the tribe of the Nereids, but she had a Siren grandmother (thus she can both fight and sing). The sea-folk have a reputation for unfriendliness to the land-peoples (mostly earned!), and furthermore, a history of contentiousness even amongst themselves. So she was trained from childhood in the arts of war and is a veteran of many battles. But when she came of age, she began to dream of other possibilities, and she went to a sea-sage and began to study the skills of alliance: dialog, negotiation, coalition. She practiced her new trade up and down the beaches of Sirenia Cove and the waters about it. At first, she was regarded with suspicion, and not every attempt was a success, but she did get some sea-tribes talking to one another that had never done anything before but fight.

It is an old aphorism among the ocean races that you cannot trust a landsman or landswoman, and the First Plague War did not put much of a dent in this belief. Some of the sea-folk died, others fled to the deep ocean, and the survivors blamed the land-people for bringing the Plague to the island. But with the return of the Plague Soldiers in the present era, other voices began to be heard, and among them, Zeresh’s. She spoke in council to say that although the sea peoples might think that they could escape to the sea and thus avoid the Plague, this was not actually possible; the most revered luminaries of all the ocean-peoples had always believed that the Sea and the Land are in fact interdependent, and that ultimately, if one failed, so would the other. If a solution to the problem exists, all must strive to find it together. Zeresh volunteered to go to the land as an envoy of the Nereids, to offer an alliance to any and all of the land races that would accept it. She could not speak for all of the ocean peoples, as not all were yet on board with this idea, but her tribe alone constituted a small army, and so this was no small offer.

Likes :
Conversation. Music. Shaking hands on a deal that works for both parties. CANDY!! (The sea is a very salty place, and sometimes a girl requires a little sweetness.)

Dislikes :
Unreasoning hatred and senseless cruelty. She has had enough of that.

As far as you know, you're:
Single. What with being both a warrior and a hard-working visionary, she’s never taken time to consider hooking up permanently with anybody.

They say you're :
The sea-folk in general are said to be dangerous and duplicitous.

Is actually :
Dangerous, yes, if you’re facing her in battle. Duplicitous….well, not too often. Generally, she’s direct, courteous, candid, and even compassionate, and moreover, she has a whimsical sense of humor. In her girlhood, she was brash and quick to jump into a fight (or start one), but time has tempered her. Now, her goal is to live long enough to see the sea-folk and the land-folk aligned against the Plague Soldiers, and to be a part of this effort. She will turn down a challenge if she thinks that in doing so, she might further the cause. The mission comes first. But if her life or the lives of those to whom she owes loyalty or protection are immediately at stake, all weapons, including trickery, are a part of her arsenal.

Skilled in :
Sword and trident. She’s also got a knife in her boot and one up her sleeve. She is a pretty fair shot with a bow, although she doesn’t carry one. She’s a good tactician, uses all her skills and attributes as weapons, doesn’t make the usual discrimination between what is a weapon and what is not. She may hit you over the head with a chair, or an octopus(!), or employ words as weapons (in the linguistic sense, not in the magical sense).

Communicating with people who don't see the world the way she does, as well as the ones who do. (As described above in the Story section.)

When traveling on land, she has a very precise and detailed geographic memory, especially for water sources – lakes, rivers, streams, wells, horse-troughs, whatever. She also has an uncanny ability to locate water at a distance, and this is due to an acute sense of smell as well as to a sea-nymph's mystical connection to water. She can call seabirds, sea mammals, and fish, communicate with them, and use them as messengers. And being of the people of the sea, she is a very strong swimmer. She is a musician – her instrument is the harp, and in song she has a wild, resonant voice.

Powers:
She has inherited some VOICE MAGIC from her Siren grandmother. (The grandmother was a traditional ship-wrecking Siren -- she would sit on a rock and sing, and lure fishermen or sailors onto dangerous shoals, and then salvage the wrecks. In her telling of her stories to her granddaughter, Zeresh, she never quite answered the child’s question as to whether or not she ate the boatmen. XD) However, Zeresh uses the magic for different goals – she likes to perform, and has been known to enthrall an audience slyly for the sake of the tips. It’s one way to make a living while wandering about the lands – she has to support her envoy habit, somehow!

She is A BIT OF A SHAPE-CHANGER; when in water, her fish-wings emerge. They melt back into her shoulders when she climbs up onto land. This is normally an involuntary reflex, but she can control it consciously, as well. This is a very minor power, but useful.

You may at times see the shimmer of a cyan light about her -- this is an expression of mood, but she can also summon these SEA LIGHTS deliberately in order to light her way in the dark. This is partly bioluminescence and partly sea-magic.

Ace:
It’s a tossup between the weapons and the communication skills. (Zeresh herself would say that negotiation is a significant art, and ought to be considered a second ace, if not a first.)

Weaknesses :
The sea-peoples live in the sea and vary in their ability to live out of it. Zeresh’s tribe are able to live on land for a time, provided they don’t get too far away from water for too long. She can get by with sticking her feet in a pond or a bathtub, or pouring a bucket of water over her head. But if she were to be trapped or imprisoned in an enclosed space without an abundant water-source, she would die within a few weeks or months. She takes care not to advertise this fact, and hopes her enemies are too stupid to guess it.
