What's another word for "doesn't want/actively seek help"? Independent is slightly off, and so is prideful, and I'm drawing a blank...

Yes she is. I rewrote mostly the relationship bit in the remake profile. I don't know if we verified if Val was there when Kahru got taken to prison. If so yay some conflict to work through. Otherwise would she have seen him in prison? That would likely be the only time they met.

Kahru or Thrain was caught first in Mirkwood, and Ghel bargained for both their release, right? At the minimum, she'll recognize his voice.

I believe that Ghel bargained for Thrains release since he was related to him and Kahru broke out, hiding in the confiscated wagon when Thrain would have taken with him. I don't think it needs to have been dark for them to have left.

Kahru was caught in a misunderstanding as the Easterlings along with the orcs that were being cleared out of Dol Goldur. They would likely have not been many left but perhaps Kahru had been checking up on fellow Easterlings when the raid began and was captured.
