Aged Prophet

Did I use this word correctly in my sentence?

"...schedules and are despondent to meet with standards they have put upon themselves"

If not, I'm trying to look for a synonym to 'desperate'.
Could you include the entirety of the sentences? It seems awkward out of context? Also, despondent is a synonym for depressed or forlorn. It doesn't mean the same thing as desperate.
Yeah, the context is a little confusing. Why don't you like desperate?

It might be the lack of context, but while you may have used despondent correctly, it sounds really, really weird, and it does have a bizarre implication here.

And despondent is not a synonym for desperate. That's the danger of thesauruses: if you don't know the meanings and connotations of the words listed, you're probably making your writing worse by subbing different words in (because they will invariably give your words a meaning you didn't intend).
