As the morning sun seeped through the windows of their modest home, Zelda opened her eyes and smiled sleepily up at the sky. Morning on the surface was wonderful in a way that Skyloft never was; the sky here was cloudless and blue, and the fine particles of dust suspended in the air caused the sunlight to scintillate beautifully. And she was so blessed to be able to share these moments with Link...

As she thought those words, Zelda turned around to gaze at her childhood friend's sleeping form. As usual, he was sleeping in. The girl giggled quietly at how his drool congealed on his sleeping pallet. Even after defeating the Demon King Demise, he could so quickly return to his old ways and sleep until the Loftwings came home.

Zelda's gaze turned somber as she sighed and cat her gaze upwards. After they had defeated Demise, they had said so many goodbyes... First, Impa had departed, and then Groose. She had thought that Groose would be thrilled to lead Skyloft in her place as she remained in the surface world with Link. But, rather than elation, he had displayed sorrow and even clapped Link on the back in a manner far more friendly than he had ever done before. Too, she thought she could hear him cry as he led their Loftwings away...

Link's Loftwing had tried to bring them back above the clouds. Zelda had seen that familiar red bird swoop down after them many times, only to be defeated by the stark pressure changes between surface and Skyloft. That didn't stop it from trying, though; the ex-tribe leader grew accustomed to seeing the Loftwing dive and wheel about in the sky. She couldn't, however, deny that staring up at the sky outside now made Zelda miss her home. Yet at the same time, Hyrule had become as previous to her as it had been to her ancestor, Hylia. She had a duty to this land, one she couldn't refuse.

Thus Zelda had resolved herself to a fate made much less lonely by the presence of her childhood friend.

By now, Link had finally deigned to awake. The girl smiled brightly as she saw his silhouette sit up and stretch and she approached him when he exited their home. No, he was more than just a friend to her; how much more, she did not know.
"Good morning, Link," Zelda greeted, slinking up behind him and placing both her hands on his shoulders. "So, what shall we do today? Shall we tend the farms, or visit Impa, or simply explore?" The list made her feel somewhat lonely, for there was only so much to do when they were so comparatively alone.

(I'll add the post style later on a real computer. || Feels a little odd at the end here. Maybe something could happen involving crazed Loftwings, crazed Fi, Groose/Skyloft, and other members of Bertreaux's race?)

Sleep was a pleasure Link missed since his previous quest to vanquish Demise. He couldn't seem to ever get enough shut-eye and because of this, Zelda usually woke him up. At least it wasn't a bird squawking in his face, but he would not have minded if it was, seeing that he missed his Loftwing terribly. After defeating the foe who threatened their world Link's sleep was filled with pleasant dreams. However, on this particular day something sinister invaded his mind. A vision of the Imprisoned came into view, which was very similar to the dream he first had at the beginning of his last adventure. Yet there was a strange feeling in this new nightmare. Link felt the ground shake and tremble below his feet and an ominous, glowing, red figure approached him. The hero stood his ground although he held no sword or shield. Diamonds covered the figure and it had flowing red hair and lifeless eyes. She lifted her hand and in it appeared the Triforce. Link jumped to snatch the precious power from her, but she smashed it and met the hero with the end of a blade pointed at his throat. He glared at the villain and began to fall into the mouth of the Imprisoned.

Link bolted up from his bed with sweat covering his forehead. His breath was jagged and deep as he breathed out a sigh. He pushed himself up and stood in the middle of the home he built for Zelda and himself. The house was located right behind the Temple of Hylia in Faron Woods beneath the shade of tall trees and the bright blue sky. While the mysterious figure was only a dream, he knew it was foretelling a great ordeal. The blond stared outside the window at the great statue of the goddess, Hylia. Luckily, the Triforce could be seen in its stationary position in the goddess' hands and Link was relieved.

The hero walked out the door and stepped onto the soft grass with his bare feet. He didn't want to worry Zelda, so he decided not to tell her of his frightening dream right at that moment. When he looked to her he was greeted by her smiling face, which made it impossible for him not to smile back. "Good morning, Zelda." Link listened as she listed the possible activities they could partake in. "Why don't we go visit our friends in Skyloft? I know it's only been a month, but I know we both miss everyone. I still have the sailcloth you made for me, so we can go anytime we want to." He gave her a smile and waited to hear her answer, but they were interrupted when a beam of blue light shot out of the temple. "The Master Sword!" Link's blue eyes widened in shock and he grabbed Zelda's hand as they ran toward the disturbance.

When they reached the alter where Link's sword was stuck, Fi appeared, awoken from her sleeping state. "Master, I sense a malevolent presence above. I think it would be best to venture to Skyloft and investigate. This manifestation has woken me from my endless sleep, which was 99% impossible; therefore I believe the goddess has called upon me to serve you once more.” Link nodded and wished they could have met again under better circumstances. Without a moment of hesitation the seventeen year old ripped the sword from the stone and turned to run back to the cottage to grab all of his gear. Zelda was ahead of him, ready to face danger head on. He loved how determined and spontaneous she was, but he was worried about her safety. And there was the Triforce to worry about also. If they left, there would be no one to protect it, but if Zelda stayed behind they'd be separated. Link finally caught up with the golden haired beauty and stopped in front of her. Perhaps she would know what to do. "Zelda, I know we have to go to Skyloft, but what about the Triforce. I had a dream last night that someone was going to take it," he spoke as he slipped on his green hat and tunic.

Out. Of. Caramel;;You said you didn't finished the game, correct? I think it would be best if you did so I don't spoil anything for you, but I do need to tell you that they wouldn't be able to visit Impa. Maybe Groose or someone could come down and watch the Triforce, or maybe it would be more exciting for the two to be torn apart. Location;;Faron Woods Feeling;;Anxious and worried

Zelda nodded happily as Link suggested visiting their friends in Skyloft.
“Of course!” she agreed. She took a step toward the bird statue just beyond their little home. “If you’re all ready, we can go pray there and—“

Before she could even finish her statement, a blue beacon shot out of the inner temple. Zelda’s eyes widened, and her heart almost stopped, for she knew with a sinking feeling what that meant. The girl should have known that their comfortable if lonely life would not last, not for Hylia’s descendant and certainly not for the Hero. Zelda darted after Link as he tugged her along into the temple, where they found the altar of the Master Sword. As she had expected, Fi was awake once again, regarding them with crystalline eyes from her levitated position just above them.

The sword spirit had barely finished her dire statements when Zelda ran out of the temple. She had known within a few words what Fi’s awakening meant, and as she did not need to wait to retrieve the Master Sword herself, she beat Link to their cottage. Inside, the girl seized her harp and her spellbook, in which she had written down many of her spells in reverse order of difficulty. Zelda quickly reviewed a few of the more important melodies on her harp as Link donned his knight’s outfit again; when she finished with her rapid solo, she listened to Link’s words with a growing sense of horror.
“There is nothing to consider!” she told him decisively. “We’ll just skip visiting everyone else instead. If we go straight to Sky Keep, then we can know for sure what has happened to the Triforce. And if there is an enemy there, I will help you defeat it!” Zelda’s hands clenched on the harp she held. “Come on! Let’s go!” she ordered. Without much of a pause for Link to catch up, the girl virtually flew to the bird statue and clasped her hands together in fervent prayer.

(Yeah, I remember reading something about Impa being from the past and the old forest lady being Impa. I guess I forgot that she died, though. || I think my lack of experience with Skyward Sword won’t matter for too much longer if we’re building our own adventure. I have at least played OOT and TP all the way through. So long as I know the general setup, foes, and mechanics of the dungeons/location, it should be okay? I’m currently in the Lanayru Mining Facility [the one in the desert center] in SS, but have yet to complete that.)

Link rushed to put all of his armor on and collect all of his gadgets. He stuffed two empty bottles into his adventure pouch along with his slingshot. The hero grabbed his bow, quiver, bomb bag, and the Hylian Shield. Once he had his gear strapped to his back and waist he turned to Zelda. She too was hurrying to prepare for their journey and spoke her mind. He was glad to have her by his side, yet he was consumed with worry. The sound of her screams of agony echoed in his mind and terrified him to no end. However, he knew there was no stopping the goddess when she was intent on doing something. Link thought of how the Triforce was locked tightly inside of Sky Keep. Not long ago he and Zelda hid it in a chest deep within the temple, and she cast a spell to protect it. He only hoped the Triforce was the way they left it: safe.

By the time he reached the bird statue Zelda was already praying and a beam of golden light shot skyward. Without a moment of hesitation Link pulled out the sailcloth she made for him and they flew up through the thick clouds. A simple whistle called his crimson bird to carry him to Skyloft. He flew beside his childhood friend and he stole a glance at her. The familiar determined look was there and he smiled before looking ahead. They jumped before they reached Sky Keep and landed on the island with the waterfalls. Link pulled out his clawshot and instructed Zelda to wrap her arms around his neck and legs around his torso as they shot from one target to the next until they reached the entrance to the temple.

The hero walked in front of the goddess, but made sure to keep her hand in his. He wanted to know she was with him at all times for he began to sense something of extreme evil. Link pushed open the heavy stone door and found the first room of the temple in disarray. The archway was crumbled and lying on the floor and the blocks in the alter which moved the rooms of the temple around was in a different order than the hero remembered it. A frustrated, unfamiliar scream echoed through the structure and caused it to shake violently. Link stumbled forward a bit and went to the alter with the room blocks. The room in which the Triforce was located was connected to where the pair was and he stepped toward the door, shoving it upward and running inside.

When they entered the room where the chest was hidden a woman with red diamonds decorating her white body could be seen. Her hair fluttered about and looked exactly like a blazing flame. Link released his grip of Zelda and pulled out his sword, ready for a fight. The female sword spirit screeched as she dug her nails into the treasure chest, but failed to get it open. Link stood silently, wondering if she was aware of their presence. As if she read his mind the woman lifted her head and stared at the pair with black eyes. "Well, well, well, what do we have here? The pipsqueak reincarnation of the goddess, Hylia, and her chosen hero," she paused and looked Link up and down. "At least she had enough taste to make a hero as handsome as you." Her lips curled upward into a mischievous smile. "Why don't you come over here and help out a damsel in distress? Especially one so beautiful, much more beautiful than that mutt you have beside you." The hero's blue eyes widened in surprise. No one was allowed to speak of his Zelda that way. His brows furrowed in anger. "Don't speak of Zelda that way, you monster," Link glanced over at his best friend. "She is radiant, kind, intelligent, and no one can compare to her beauty!" Both the sword spirit and the hero were taken aback by what he said. Link couldn't believe he said all that out loud instead of in his head. "Monster? How rude. My name is Incendio and I'll have you know," suddenly she disappeared and reappeared behind them, "there is no woman alive more beautiful than I, unless you count my mistress," she whispered, pushing Zelda playfully to the side. Link jumped back and pointed his sword at her throat.

Although Zelda herself hadn't entered the Sky Keep before, she was struck with an irresistible sense of déjà vu as soon as she set her foot on that hallowed ground. Perhaps Hylia had been here long ago to protect the Triforce. In either case, she did not feel as if she were entering a completely foreign place; rather, she felt a curious sense of duty and homecoming, as if she had been destined to return here for some grave task.

Even if, as the goddess' descendant, she was entitled to an extensive knowledge of elemental magic, no manipulation of that would allow her to fly directly to the Triforce's resting place. So Zelda willingly clamped her arms around Link's neck as he used his Clawshot to haul them closer. As they went, she nestled her face into his shoulders, silently thrilling in every grunt and flex of his muscles. Despite his penchant for excessive napping, Link was quite a strong and formidable knight, and she loved the fact that he was her knight alone.

Zelda let go of her friend somewhat reluctantly, regretting this loss of physical contact, but then he held out his hand for her. She gratefully took it, but not before giving him a half-glare that warned against shoving her into a corner pressure like a helpless child. Zelda had absolutely no intention to stay out of battle and let others become unnecessarily hurt on her behalf. She stopped short at the sight of the wreckage in the Sky Keep antechamber. Not only was that gilded archway shattered upon the temple floor, but also, as Zelda stared dumbly at this blatant act of blasphemy, a scream ripped through the temple halls, causing them to shake. Hylia's descendant's worst fears flooded her mind, and she ran with her Hero into the Triforce hall.

Zelda's fears were only half true, for while someone had indeed breached the Triforce chamber, that someone had not managed to gain the sacred artifact. The girl observed the intruder from her little corner of the room as she listened to Link's chat with her, virtually unnoticed by either conversant. The other lady was tall and white-skinned, so that she rather resembled Ghirahim in complexion. Red diamonds studded her too lean form, and her hair flickered and hovered about her head like a flame. Her nails were long, black, and unnaturally sharp. She wore a tight red mini-dress that folded on itself at about her mid-thigh, and long ribbons fanned out from her shoulders like serpentine wings, where they attached to her wrists with a wide silver bangle. Zelda thought she resembled Fi, which meant that this lady was another sword spirit. Her hunch was confirmed when the lady turned around and regarded them with her empty black eyes. But if she was indeed a sword spirit, then of what sword? That she did not know.

Zelda was outraged by the woman’s insult to her. How dare this Incendio equate Hylia’s descendant to a common mutt? Before she could retort, however, Link interjected, declaring that Zelda was by far the most beautiful person in the world. Although the girl was startled by his candor, she smiled appreciatively at him before returning her gaze to the red-and-white intruder—only she was no longer there.

Zelda whirled about, searching frantically for Incendio, only to find her behind them both. Before the girl could react, she felt Incendio’s claws trace a chilling path across her neck, sending shivers up her spine. Despite her fiery appearance, Incendio’s touch felt as cold and hungry as a vampire’s. Zelda hardly had time to comprehend the fact that Incendio had a mistress before she felt herself being shoved aside. Zelda cried out as she was unexpectedly knocked off her feet, and she quickly spat out an arcane word of magic, pointing in the sword spirit’s general direction. Incendio laughed as she absorbed the blow, and Zelda realized in horror that, in her haste, she had just cast a fire spell against a fiery foe. Link, for his part, leapt back and aimed his sword at the spirit’s throat, but he moved just a hair too slowly, allowing Incendio enough time to dodge away. She disappeared before the Hero’s blade and reappeared atop a Loftwing statue, smiling down at them.

“Is this the best Hylia’s kin can do?” she asked tauntingly down at them. “She has lost her touch! Face me and see what true strength is!” With that, Incendio waved her left hand across her body, the corresponding ribbon trailing in her wake. Suddenly, the ribbon flared out and split apart into dozens of black kunai knives, which then rocketed at Link and Zelda.

Hylia’s descendant quickly threw up a magical force field to shield herself from the deadly barrage while Link ducked behind his shield. Any knives that hit either barrier ricocheted off and disappeared into a fine black vapor, while those that missed buried themselves into the stone floor. Meanwhile, Incendio swung her other arm, leaping down from her perch, using her ribbons as a sort of parachute. When she landed daintily on the floor, Zelda noticed that her right hand had converted itself into a blood-red blade.

Incendio rushed at Zelda, her sword-hand flat against her side, her expression hungry and insane. The girl watched the sword spirit attack her as if in slow motion, and she dived out of the way as best she could. Incendio’s blade whistled through the space where her head had been, close enough to chop a few blonde hairs in half. Zelda had hardly darted back to her feet when Incendio screeched and swung at her again. Hylia’s descendant spoke another arcane word, and a spray of water drenched the offending sword spirit in front of her. Incendio seemed to slow down substantially as her fiery hair became matted and heavy; as a result, her next swing was ridiculously easy to avoid. Zelda, sensing victory, bounded farther away from the sword spirit and cried out the words to another spell, one that would fire razor-sharp icicles at her target.

Unfortunately, Incendio did see this attack coming, and she quickly blocked the frozen onslaught with her sword-hand. Zelda expelled her breath in an angry huff and prepared to cast another more potent spell, but the sword spirit blurred out of existence before the words could even emerge from her lips. Both Link and Zelda stared around, their every sense on high alert, but they couldn’t see Incendio anywhere.

“Where… did she go?” Zelda murmured as she edged back to Link’s side.

(I don’t want to take over this entire battle, so I’m thinking Incendio can target Zelda for another hit or two before Link slashes at her and cuts into one of her body jewels. Then maybe she could flee and they can return to Skyloft looking for news and info.)

"Zelda," the hero cried out as he swung his blade their foe, barely missing her pale neck. He went to the goddess's side when the spirit vanished and helped her to her feet. "Are you alright?" Worry coated his voice and distracted him from Incendio's biting words. Zelda was much more important. Link looked upward once the girl reassured him she was uninjured and raised his shield quickly to block the barrage of black kunai knives. With the next onslaught he stepped away from Zelda and spun his sword, shooting the weapons back at his enemy. She dodged most of them, only receiving a cut in the arm from one knife. Link lunged forward as she charged toward Zelda and shoved the villain to the side. He watched in terror as her arm still swung outward in his friend's direction and sliced off some of her beautiful golden hair. The hero jabbed his sword at the large, blood red diamond gem on Incendio's chest several times, cracking it, and was met with a furious swing of her blade arm. A quick back flip saved him from having his head sliced off, but by dodging away he left Zelda open to face the sword spirit. Luckily, she knew how to cast powerful spells and slowed their enemy considerably with water. Her fiery, wild hair turned dark and stuck to her arms and back. Link stepped closer to Zelda when Incendio disappeared, for he knew the fight was not over. "I do not know." He stood in a fighting stance without a word, breathing quietly and scanning the scene for their foe. A few minutes passed and the blond straightened his posture before glancing behind him. Incendio was nowhere to be found. Link gazed down at Zelda to see if she thought they were safe and in that instant he felt a sharp blade dig into his back, trailing from his right hip all the way up to his left shoulder. The sudden blow knocked him forward and he screamed in agony. A jagged, deep gash was torn through his clothing, armor, flesh, and muscle. His green tunic quickly became scarlet with his blood and he struggled to push himself off the ground.

Incendio snickered as she slashed at Zelda, almost hitting her, and then teleported to the top of a bird statue. Her laughter grew and she licked the blood off of her blade hand. "Does it hurt? You see, I learned from Ghirahim's mistakes. He always let you live through the battle and you always came back. That's quite troublesome, but don't worry; I'm not going to kill you today. You're too cute to murder on our first meeting. Plus I think it'll be fun to toy with the both of you a bit more." She snapped her fingers and waves of blistering heat were sent up the hero's gash. He cried out in pain and gripped the handle of his sword tightly. "Ta-ta for now children. I shall return soon," she spoke with a giggle and vanished, leaving the pair alone. They were lucky the chest was rooted into the ground so she could not run off with it. Link whimpered on the cold stone floor and he was pale from blood loss. His tired blue eyes looked up to see Zelda rush to his side. "Zelda," he murmured as she took him into her arms, "Don't worry about me. I'll be fine." Link staggered up as she helped him up. When she attempted to put his left arm around her shoulder he grunted from the pain, so they switched places. How could he let his guard down like that? He was foolish and now Zelda would be in danger because he was not at his full strength.

Waiting outside was Link's red Loftwing, no doubt called to Sky Keep by his owner's cries. As they drifted through the air together on his bird Link nestled his face in the crook of the goddess's neck. Her gentle touch comforted him while more waves of heat attacked the deep cut in his back. It was not a secret that he was infatuated with Zelda. Whenever she was near he felt warm and whole. Her smile and voice were enchanting to him and he would sacrifice himself if it meant saving her. He breathed heavily, the pain repeating a cycle of extreme intensity to numbness. They reached the knight academy and since they entered through the second floor door the pair went to Zelda's room. Link set his sword and shield on the floor by the bed and removed his ripped shirt and chainmail as he was instructed to do so. He held onto the desk chair and remained standing until Zelda ordered him to lie down so she could treat his wound. He tried to protest, but at that point she gave him no choice and as feelings of dizziness began he was no longer reluctant. Though, he still did not want her to worry. Link lied on his stomach and recognized the faint smell of Zelda the bed had. He looked up at her with a melancholy expression. "I'm sorry for causing you trouble. I let my guard down and now I can't protect you like I'm supposed to." He lifted his right hand and grasped hers. "Promise me you won't stray too far while I'm like this, so I can keep an eye on you. I don't want to lose you again." Link's eyelids grew heavy and he closed them, just to rest for a bit.

Zelda nodded at Link's uncertainty, for she felt the exact same way. They both warily watched the shadows for any sign of their foe, but Incendio, it seemed, wad nowhere to be found. Eventually, she felt the Hero's warmth pull away from her back as Link turned to gaze perplexedly at her. She too stepped back and meet his confused gaze with her own.

Without warning, Link arched his back in a sudden agonized shout of pain as a bloody gash opened up in his back, extending from his right hip to his left shoulder. Zelda screamed with him as she watched Incendio's blood-red blade erupt out the other end of his body, soaring his blood high into the air. She could only watch in stupefied horror as the evil sword spirit appeared behind Link and advance towards her with a manic smile on the face above that bloodied blade.

The girl came to her senses just in time to barely dodge out if the way of her enemy's next attack. Zelda dropped backwards at the knee and leaned back as far as she could to escape Incendio's cutting blade, shuddering fearfully as it came far too close to her, tracing a thin line across her neck in Link's blood but not yet drawing her own. She quickly crossed her hands to draw out another arcane spell, but by this time, Incendio had teleported away, back to the head of the bird statue.

"Does it hurt?" the spirit asked with a cold, coy laugh. "But don't worry; I won't kill you yet. You're much too cute to kill on our first meeting. Ta-ta for now, children!" And before Zelda could even hurl one word of angry protest back at her, she was gone.

The goddess' descendant glared daggers at the statue Incendio had just vacated, as if glaring at it long enough would make the spirit return to repent. A whimper from Link drew her attention back to him. "Link!" she cried, running over to him.
                  "Are you all right?"

Her question was purely rhetorical, for any fool could see that he was not fine. Be he brave or stupid, however, Link insisted that he was perfectly okay and tried to stand up on his own.
"No way!" Zelda retorted back at him. "You're obviously not fine! Don't walk on your own! Here, let me walk you out..." She swiftly tore a piece of her dress off and used it to stanch the bleeding as much as she could for now. Then she cast a quick adhesion spell to promote blood clotting at the injury site and keep the impromptu bandage in place.

After a bit of confusion, Zelda got them both outside of Sky Keep, where she found Link's Loftwing waiting. The crimson bird had always been more sensitive to his master's feelings than other birds to their masters; thus, it didn't surprise her that he was there and not her bird as well. The girl eased Link into his Loftwing before hoping on herself, sitting closer to its neck to better direct it in flight. She felt Link burrow into her hair and flushed as his grip around her waist tightened. The very air seemed to hamper his healing, for every time his breath seized in his throat, she felt as though her hearty would stop. Since their earliest years, Zelda had been fond of Link, and even when destiny drove them apart, she still cared deeply for him and would risk anything fir him. Their past weeks together on the surface had only strengthened that resolve, and it seemed that their love was now to be tested.

Far too many moments later, they landed on the second floor of the knight academy. Link's Loftwing knelt obligingly as Zelda helped Link dismount. She led him directly to her room, and she ordered him to lie down on his stomach and disrobe. Since the cut extended all the way to his hip, Zelda ordered his pants off, too, and after they exchanged a few stunned, red-faced glances, she turned around, blushing furiously, and did not move until he called for her again.

Finally, the girl turned around, and her breath caught at the enormity of her friend's wound. Dear Nayru; how in the world had Link managed to stay awake? Zelda forced her fears aside and instead summoned a bit of mineral water to clean his wound. She felt Link wince the first few times, but as it went on, he seemed to get used to it. Finally, the horrible wound was washed, and without the blood, it looked like little note than an angry old scar. Hylia's descendant cast one final sealing spell over the injury and then fetched a cool cloth to lay over it. She grabbed another one for his lower body, too.

By this time, Link had woken up again. Zelda nodded and waved his thanks off, but to his urging her to stay she could only half-agree.
"Of course I'll stay, Link," she said softly, stroking his cheek. "But you can't honestly expect me to stay here all day with you when one of the others might know something of this new sword spirit. I have to go and get information; but don't worry, I won't be gone too long. I'll let Pipit know you're here so that he can check up on you if I can't. You're not going to lose me again--I promise you that."

Zelda watched as Link accepted that and his breathing slowed. When she could hear him snoring ever so faintly, the girl stood carefully up and left the room, locking the door behind her and taking along a key. She had only one person to ask right now for information--two if she counted Pipit--and doubted that she would be long.

The first person she wanted to find was Link's old upperclassman friend. Last she'd heard, Pipit had married Karane and now led the sword training facility. Zelda hurried over to the building and knocked on the door before pushing it open herself. Inside, she found a surprised Pipit hurriedly sheathing his sword and standing up.

"Zelda!" he greeted, striding over to her. "What a surprise! I thought you and Link had taken up permanent residence on the Surface?"

"We got homesick," Zelda replied with a laugh. "So we came to visit. How goes it at the academy?"

"Never been better! We just got a new round of trainees, and the ol' freshies are now upperclassmen!" Pipit smirked. "'Course, none o' them are as good as Link and I used to be."

                  Zelda nodded.
"About Link... We ran into a little bit of trouble coming back here. You see..." Then she proceeded to tell him the whole story.

The swordsmaster's eyes widened in disbelief.
"No way!" he exclaimed. "You're kidding me, right? ... Of course not," he conceded, setting the look on her face.

                  Zelda nodded gravely.
"At Sky Keep, we found a rampant sword spirit who wanted to steal the Triforce for her master, whoever that is. The chest was rotted into the ground, thank the goddesses. But Link wasn't so lucky; he got a long slash across his entire backside. While we're here, can I count on you to check up on him if I can't?"

                  Pipit nodded seriously.
"Of course! You can count on me, Zelda!"

"Good. Now then... You wouldn't happen to know anything about this other sword spirit, would you?"

                  The man frowned.
"Nope. Only one I've seen was Fi. You might try asking Owlan or the chief?"

Zelda quickly imagined where they we right now. Both old men had rooms right in the academy, so she would still be in range of Link if he needed something of her.
"Thanks for the suggestion, Pipit. I'll go ahead and do that. Take care!" she called over her shoulder as she left.

"You too, Zelda!" came his response.

Zelda wanted back at him and returned to the ground floor of the knight academy. Now who should she look for first...?
                  ***
(LOL My phone gave me Loftwrong by accident. XD || I don't think Owlan and the chief are the same, but I forgot the latter's name... Who's better for knowing this sort of thing? I might ask you to play him, too.)

As embarrassed as Link was being half naked in front of Zelda he did as she instructed. With her skill and magic he knew was in capable hands. The fact that they were familiar hands comforted him as well. His unbearable pain finally subsided as the goddess placed damp cloths over the burning cut. The cool relief brought a smile to his face and his eyes gazed up to meet Zelda's. She gave him a practical answer to his request, which was no surprise to him. Of the pair he was almost always the one who acted without thinking first, but luckily he had her to keep him from getting himself into too much trouble. He reached his hand to touch hers as she caressed his cheek. Link nodded as she promised he would not lose her again and squeezed her hand gently before she stood from her chair. "Be safe." A small smile spread across his face and he closed his eyes, for he was tired. A short rest would be beneficial to the healing of his wound, therefore he allowed himself to sleep.

-----------------------------------

The sword spirit stepped into a long, dimly lit corridor with scarlet tapestries hung in between where golden candelabra protruded from the stone walls. A rug of the same red hue led the way to a large chamber with a tall arched window. At the window sat a woman with hair as radiant as a blazing flame and bronzed skin. Her sanguine eyes trailed upward to see her faithful servant enter the room. "Madame, I did as you said. There's no doubt in my mind that you'll soon have the goddess's chosen hero wrapped around your finger." The Gerudo woman turned to Incendio and a wide smile came across her face. "Perfect. With his help I'll have every piece of the Triforce in no time at all." She placed her hand on her bare stomach, which had a slight roundness to it and began to laugh. Outside the window was a beautiful view of a sky with white clouds and the sun peeking out from behind. Everything was going according to plan and soon the child of Demise would be welcomed into this kingdom of light and return it to its state of darkness and shadows. Incendio smiled at the thought and left the chamber of her mistress to continue spying on the goddess and her hero.

-----------------------------------

Gaepora peered up from the tome of history he had been reading for the past week and glanced out the open window behind him. It was a particularly marvelous day in Skyloft. A fresh breeze blew the curtains about and Loftwings flew gracefully in the sky. The chief of the floating island turned back to his book to place a paper to save his place in it before shutting it and walking to the door. He decided to take a walk outside while the weather was pleasant. Zelda's father went downstairs and out the front door of the knight academy. He passed by some of the new trainees nodded when they greeted him. The new group was a bit rough around the edges, but they had tenacity and listened well enough. However, none of them would ever be as talented as his daughter and her friend. Gaepora sighed as he thought of his dear Zelda. He knew Link would protect her with his life, but living without his precious child was difficult for him to do. The man stroked his beard and began walking toward the sword training facility when he spotted a familiar pink dress. He looked up from the path to see the person he wished to see most: Zelda! Gaepora speed up his stride and met the girl as she came toward him. He held her in a tight embrace and released her. "What are you doing here? I thought you and Link were living on the surface," he asked and looked around. "Speaking of Link, where is he?"

-----------------------------------

Link snored happily on Zelda's bed. In his sleep he had managed to tangle himself up in her blankets and was greeted with her scent. A trail of drool dripped from his open, smiling mouth. He wasn't plagued by any nightmares and for that he was grateful. However, his reality was going to become something like a nightmare in the near future and he was left blissfully unaware. Incendio sat at the desk leafing through the pages of one of Zelda's books. She was so bored. Such peace in the world was nauseating. The sword spirit wanted to entertain herself, but her mistress had told her not to cause a disturbance and draw attention to their plan until they made their next move. She sighed and glanced at the sleeping hero before teleporting away.

Zelda had given up searching the knight academy after two runs around both floors. Her father was nowhere to be found inside. Perhaps he had gone out for a walk? Gaepora did enjoy his afternoon constitutionals, after all. As Zelda rapidly approached the stairs down, she paused by her door and pressed an ear to it. Link was snoring; that was a good sign. An image flashed briefly through her mind of the Hero sleeping tangled up in her blankets like a fishing line, and the girl smiled amusedly before running down the stairs to find her father.

She found Gaepora walking by the bazaar and ran up to him. Simultaneously, he looked up; their eyes met, and then both of them hastened their stride to meet halfway in a tight hug.
”Zelda,” he breathed as they embraced for the first time in months. ”What are you doing here? I thought you and Link were living on the surface.”

Hylia’s descendant broke off the embrace and gazed up at him, for despite his age, Gaepora was still much taller than her. Her eyes clouded over with recent memories, and she had to wait a moment before she could speak.
”Father, we returned because I fear there is something very bad afoot,” she announced worriedly to him. “We had planned to return for a visit because we haven’t been to Skyloft in such a long time, but then Link had a nightmare and we decided to check on Sky Keep first. Luckily, the Triforce is still safe, but it wasn’t alone. We found another sword spirit there, and it looked as if she wanted to steal the Triforce for herself.” Zelda quickly described Incendio to her father, and then asked, “I don’t know how this could be possible… We have already killed Demise and destroyed Ghirahim, so how can there still be someone after the Triforce? Father, have you read any legends that preclude this sort of thing?”

Gaepora's cheerful manner hardened as his only daughter spoke of the impending dangers. He nodded solemnly and beckoned for her to follow while he began to walk toward the Knight Academy. The headmaster explained to Zelda that a book was brought to him five days ago. Groose found the text atop the island where the waterfall flows down onto the main island of Skyloft. Its cover refused to open with every method Gaepora and his fellow elders attempted. A strange yellow glow radiated from the pages and there was no title printed on the outside. "Perhaps you will be able to open and read what is inside with the use of your magic."

Once the pair entered the academy building the man led Zelda up the stairs to his office. When they walked through the dark wooden doors the book floated to them and shimmered brightly in response to the goddess' presence. As she reached out to touch it, the book flung itself open and stopped on the center page. A paragraph was written in a language unknown to the headmaster and a picture of human sacrifice was depicted on the opposite page. The drawing startled the old man and he became worried at what the book could possibly say. Suddenly a faint voice, which seemed to be coming from the page, spoke in the foreign tongue. Although Gaepora could not understand a single word, it was as clear as day to Zelda.

"In the midst of the heated battle between Demise and Hylia, members of the goddess' chosen race were sacrificed by Demise and his minions. Countless victims were used to increase the strength of the dark army by creating swords like the Master Sword. The swords hold their spirits and are infused with their blood. They are incredibly powerful and can transform into a semi-human form, a demonic copy of the person sacrificed to make it. Most of the swords were destroyed when Hylia sealed Demise away, however three remain.

To create such a sword one must sacrifice a member of the Hylian race with any blade, bathe it in their blood overnight, recite the appropriate spell, then murder a loved one of the victim to seal their soul for all eternity."

-----------------------------------

Incendio hissed as she dipped her toes into the holy spring located behind Skyview Temple. The water burned, but hopefully the pain it inflicted would be worth it. She had to purify herself in the two sacred springs in order to disguise herself as a Hylian. Once she succeeded in transforming herself temporarily she could deceive Link and befriend him in case the first plan backfired. Of course, this is simply something she told herself to quell the anxious feeling in her stomach. Her mistress was unaware of the sword spirits games. Truthfully, Incendio was ordered to find the only remaining sword created by Demise to keep her entertained and out of trouble for the time being, however, she wished not to do so. She cared for Ghirahim dearly; he was like a brother to her, yet the other sword spirit always found a way to irritate Incendio. Her fiery hair extinguished as she fully submerged herself in the water. His name was Obscurum and while he could be terrifying, he was mostly annoying.

After finishing her visit to Faron Woods Incendio disappeared and went to Eldin Volcano. As she floated over the lava the gem on her chest started to shine and an incessant voice called to her. The voice was that of Obscurum and she found the blade he was kept in wedged into the sand of the steep hills leading from the volcano. She ripped him out in a rough manner and he immediately turned himself into him semi-human form. He circled her and sniffed at her damp hair before stopping in front of her. "What were you doing in one of Hylia's sacred springs? You're not switching sides are you?" Incendio groaned and swatted at him like a fly. "I should have left you in the ground," she announced as she flew up toward where the second spring was located. "So it's true then!" "No! I simply need to bathe in the water in order to transform myself into a Hylian." Obscurum gasped and chased after her. "And why in the world would you do that? Sounds awfully suspicious to me." She narrowed her soulless eyes into a glare. "You've been asleep for quite some time. You know nothing." "Then explain what's happened to me!" The female sword spirit sighed and told him of both Ghirahim and Demise's defeat. Then she informed him of Demise's mistress and the rebirth of the dark lord.

Incendio hopped out of the burning water and recited a few strange words before wiping away her current appearance and trading it for a new, subtle one. She had medium length, honey brown hair, hazel eyes, rosy cheeks covered with freckles, and light flesh. She smoothed out a red tunic and white pants to go with her dark chestnut boots. Obscurum yawned and watched with no real interest. "Are you done playing dress up?" The female sword spirit batted her long eyelashes and pouted. "It's not dress up Oby! This is crucial to our mission." Incendio paced back and forth, tapping her new fingers on her new hips. "What should my name be?" "Totally conspicuous idiot." A fire ball was sent flying at his head in response. "How about Pheoni? They're all named after birds, so it fits." Obscurum crossed his arms and gathered a ball of electric energy in his hand. Pheoni stuck her tongue out and easily floated out of the projectile's way. "You're really out of shape."

Zelda nodded as she listened to her father’s confirmation that he had indeed heard something of the ills that had recently befallen her and Link at Sky Keep. Gaepora’s report that Groose’s book would not open by any physical means only strengthened her conviction that this exact situation had happened before—and that this book documented a way to defeat it once and for all. She followed her father to his office in the academy and gazed around, expecting him to retrieve the book from his desk or a nearby bookshelf and bring it to her himself. It seemed that Gaepora himself had expected to do that, for he halted in surprise as the book floated over to them of its own accord, causing Zelda to stumble into his back. Hylia’s descendant stepped back with a quick murmur of apology, but Gaepora hardly noticed it, for he was transfixed by the glowing tome, which had suddenly flung itself open to a page in the center. On the left page was a gruesome, tribal depiction of a bloody sacrifice, replete with an ominous black sun at the top corner; on the right was a paragraph of Hylian text. At least, it seemed to her to be written in Hylian—judging by the perplexed and worried look on her father’s face, Gaepora himself could not read it.

Both of their expressions became even more confused when a voice seemed to emanate from the book itself. Again, Zelda could understand it clearly, but Gaepora appeared not to. Her jaw dropped as she heard its words. How could the Demon King be so cruel as to mercilessly kill in order to create demonic swords for his twisted army?! … The notion left an uneasy sensation in her heart. If sword spirits were demonic and created by bloody sacrifice, then was Fi originally a servant of the Demon King? Or did Hylia sacrifice a Hylian couple herself in order to create a weapon capable of meeting the forces of darkness?

Suddenly, an errant thought caused her blood to run cold. Perhaps the sword spirit that had attacked her and Link in the Sky keep worked for a follower of Demise who wished to see them terminated. To that person, she and Link must present a perfect pair—as Hylia’s chosen, they both harbored enormous power on their own; and as an unannounced but very passionate couple, either of them could be sacrificed to seal the other’s soul in a state of perpetual, immortal loneliness. It mattered not who had created Fi, either, for demise’s mysterious underling could just as easily want to sacrifice her and Link to create a sword that could destroy the Master Sword, the traitor spirit.

Suddenly, she couldn’t read any more.
“Link. I have to find Link!” Zelda exclaimed, her eyes beginning to flood with pure panic. In the span of time that had passed for her to find this knowledge, Link could very well have been attacked and killed—and he was already weak from Incendio’s initial attack! “Thank you, father!” she shouted over her shoulder as she snatched the book from out of the air and ran out of the academy. She had to find Link and show this passage to him before it was too late!
                    ***

He sensed Incendio before he ever saw her, and his soul cried out in joy, reining her in as solidly as her own desire to find him. When the flame sword spirit released him from confinement in the stone, Obscurum appeared in a flash of darkness and flipped backwards, settling into a loosely cross-legged position in the air. The first thing he noticed was that they were both very near the Eldin Spring. “Yo, Dio!” he asked. “What are you doing so near the springs? You aren’t switching sides, are you?”

“I should have left you in the ground,” she groaned by way of response, floating away towards the spring.

Obscurum wasn’t taking that pathetic dismissal as a final answer, and he unfolded his legs to glide quickly after her. After a bit of goading, he finally learned what she was doing so close to holy waters—and he didn’t like it one whit. Still, Incendio had always been the more forceful of the two, so he merely settled back and watched as she muttered a spell and transformed herself into a Hylian. Upon seeing her disguise, the ebony sword spirit couldn’t resist goading her again, for she looked absolutely ridiculous in his opinion. When she asked him what her Hylian name should be, Obscurum’s answer rose easily to his lips. “I know who you should be: TeeCee—or Totally Conspicuous Idiot.”

For his efforts, he received a fireball at his head. The male spirit backflipped out of the way and fired a sparking electric orb right back at Incendio. This sparked a brief and dangerous snowball fight of sorts, ended only when Obscurum dodged a fireball and settled again into a floating, seated position without launching another orb. “If you’re totally serious about this… Then how about Pheoni? They're all named after birds, so it fits."

Incendio sighed and reluctantly lowered her hands.
“You’re really out of shape, aren’t you? Fine; Pheoni it is.”

Obscurum watched her go and once she had disappeared toward the horizon, he huffed. “Out of shape, am I? We’ll see about that.” He snorted derisively as his gaze drifted to the holy spring. Perhaps he would copy her and transform into Hylian form as well, at least to keep an eye on his sister. Of course, they weren’t blood siblings, not even as Hylians long ago, but as sword spirits, they had grown close enough for him to consider them more than mere companions of circumstance. If anyone could discern Incendio’s true motives, Obscurum could.

But despite his intentions, the thought of wearing that fair mortal skin repulsed him, causing him to shudder in disgust. Let her wear that guise all she wants. For now at least, he would follow Incendio as he currently was. Thus decided, Obscurum unfolded himself and sped after her, his ebony form blending in with the fast approaching night.

As the Hero of this tale slept soundly he was completely unaware of the horror filling the Goddess's mind. The thoughts which filled his head were peaceful and bright, the exact opposite from that morning. He strode through a meadow, which danced as a calm breeze blew. A windmill turned in the wind and Link could hear the melody of 'The Ballad of the Goddess'. Beautiful notes entered his welcoming ears and soon he came across the source of the sound. In the glimmering sunlight the figure appeared to have golden hair. Thinking the young lady was Zelda, Link quickened his pace and was surprised to find a stranger. The girl now sitting in front of him smiled, each of her freckles turning up too. Her eyes flickered from yellow-brown to brown-green and her hair was far darker than gold. Yet, despite those facts, the chosen hero felt at ease with this perfect stranger. She didn't speak, only continuing in her song and strumming at a small harp. When she finished she reached out and touched his cheek. Link was taken aback by her gesture but he stayed put. "What is your name," he asked in a whisper. "Pheoni."

Her name, her only spoken word was the last thing he heard before waking. The aching pain in his back had subsided while he napped and he easily sat up in the bed. Zelda's powers were incredibly potent. Link's eyes wandered about the room before he decided to take a walk and meet up with his companion. Before venturing outside, however, he found a fresh shirt in the closet of his room. Gaepora had been so kind as to keep the rooms closed off to the new students until the pair was properly settled down below. Once he pulled the thin, white shirt over his head, Link walked out the front doors of the academy and walked toward the bazaar. Each shopkeeper was preparing to close for the night, but the young man greeted them and asked if they'd seen Zelda. They expressed excitement over the pair's visit to Skyloft and apologized when they could offer Link no assistance. Leaving the building he watched the sun slip behind the clouds while the moon rose in the sky. Link continued to search for the girl, calling out her name every now and then. Finally he settled on the grass beside Kukiel's home and dipped his bare feet into the cool water.

Link preoccupied himself by gently kicking his feet back and forth, stirring the water. He was focused on this task and failed to notice a brown haired girl hopping across the stones in his direction. It wasn't until he heard the piercing screech in the darkness that he bolted from his spot and ran to her. While jumping from stone to stone her foot slipped into the water and she was sent down the waterfall. Link dived into the black night sky after her and embraced the frightened female. A knight with the job of catching anyone at night flew under them and delivered the two to safe ground. He instructed them to be more careful and disappeared as quickly as he had appeared. Both the hero and the mystery girl were soaking wet, and she shivered as her teeth clattered. "Are you alright," he asked as he offered his hand to her. "Come with me to the knight academy and we can find some dry clothing." The girl nodded and grasped his hand tightly. Link noticed the tiny freckles that decorated her damp face and gave her a reassuring smile before leading her to their destination.

Upon entering, the girl seemed to calm down and she silently followed. The only room with female garments was Zelda's and Link was not entirely certain if he could borrow her clothing to a complete stranger. The young man would have given her one of his full outfits if he didn't have to wear the remaining pants himself. He decided to go shirtless as a compromise. Link gave the girl his shirt and found a pair of pants in Zelda's closet that fit her perfectly. Once she was warm and dry he sat her down in the desk chair. "Do you live around here? I don't think I've ever seen you before." She nodded, "I live on a small island not too far from here." "Why were you on this island then, if you don't mind my asking." "I rode over to the mainland this morning on Beetle's floating shop, but it seems he left for the night before I could hitch another ride." Link nodded and smiled even though she hadn't fully answered his question. "Well, I can give you a ride home in the morning. For now you'll have to rest here," he paused and allowed his eyes to survey the stranger. She was identical to the girl in his dream. "What is your name?" "It's Pheoni." Link's eyes widened in surprise. Pheoni must have been important to their mission if Link had a dream which foretold her arrival. "I'm Link," he spoke as they shook hands. "Wait here, I need to find a friend of mine, but then I'll be right back."

The Hero left the room and Pheoni turned to the window, opening it. Obscurum flew into the room and sat on the desk in front of Incendio's disguised form. "What am I going to do when he tries to take me home tomorrow? There's no home to go to," she whispered in a panic. Normally she didn't listen to the other sword spirit, but he always had the best advice when she needed it.

Zelda ran blindly down the streets of Skyloft with both of her arms wrapped around Gaepora’s book. She figured Link was still sleeping in her room, for he had never been one to shirk his shut-eye. But when she arrived there, she found it completely empty and paused in the doorway, stunned. When had he woken up? Where in Hylia’s name could he be now?

The girl decided that he had to be either at the bazaar or at Eagus’ gym; since the latter was closer, she headed there first. But after exchanging greetings with the swordsmaster and exploring the facility, Zelda found that Link had never even appeared there. At last, she ran to the bazaar. The stragglers who were still closing up shop told Zelda that they had seen Link walking toward Kukiel’s house; but this search too bore no fruit. Finally, the girl had no choice but to reluctantly give up.

As she returned to the academy with an air of dejection and slowly mounting panic, Zelda thought she spied the Hero in the distance. She lifted a hand to her forehead and squinted in the dark at the figure. When it resolved into the familiar shape of her dear friend, she beamed and ran to him, clutching the book in one hand now so as to join him sooner.
“Link!” she exclaimed happily, literally charging into his open arms. She remained in his embrace for what felt like far too short a time before she reluctantly broke away and gazed at him with an expression of utter seriousness, not without a hint of worry. “Link,” she stated. “I have just spoken with my father, and the news is not good. Then again, what news ever is?” Although her question could be regarded as a joke, Zelda did not smile; she merely regarded Link with an almost desperate worry, for Gaepora’s information had caused her to fear very much for her friend’s life. Hylia’s descendant reached out and took his hand in her own as she began to lead them back to the academy. “ We can’t speak of this out here. Come. Let’s talk inside.”

Obscurum had tailed “Pheoni” to Skyloft and had been the first to point out the Hero to her. When her foot slipped as she made her way to him, the ebony sword spirit smirked at her clumsiness and dove after her as well, resolving only to step in if the Hero was too selfish to do so himself. He was not disappointed when the Hylian dove after his sister and restored her safely to solid ground. His action allowed Obscurum to get a good look at their target, and he was not entirely pleased with what he saw. This fair-complexioned, naïve-looking youth had managed to defeat Ghirahim? If anyone had gotten soft, it was Ghirahim, to allow himself to be defeated by one such as this! Still, he said nothing, not wanting to blow his cover as the Hero escorted Pheoni to the academy.

The girl’s answers only imperfectly covered Link’s questions, and Obscurum was both relieved and amazed when he finally departed to fetch his friend. Before he could phase through the window to scold her and rant about his negative perception of the Hero, Pheoni opened the window for him and cut off his impending rant with her worries. At least she realized the rut she had talked herself into.

But as usual, it was his responsibility to get her out of it. Obscurum phased into view and leaned casually against the closet nearest the bed, folding his arms. Idly, he noticed just how much he stood out in a bright little room like this—like a shadow given depth. “Why don’t you just direct him to an island with a house or something?” he suggested. “You have to look like you live somewhere, so an island with a big rock is no good. Same goes for islands with caves. If the house is abandoned, so much the better; I doubt the boy’s been back here in quite some time.” He paused for a moment to let his suggestions sink in, but then interrupted his sister’s thoughts with a wide smile as another idea suddenly occurred to him. “Worst case scenario, you could just tell Link that you live at that carnival island above Lanayru Desert. You look athletic enough to be an acrobat there,” he added with a snigger.

(FE is a medieval series by Nintendo. It plays kinda like a digital chess/Advance Wars game; if you look up screenshots, you'll see why. Most of the games feature a [blue-haired] prince [or, very rarely, a princess] fighting to free his homeland from evil or defeat a bellicose neighbor; either case inevitably ends up becoming a grand quest to defeat this or that fell dragon. I have yet to see an exception to this general rule, but I've only really played three FE games. The series is unforgiving in that [it has a Lunatic and Lunatic+mode, both of which are INSANELY hard] when a character/unit dies, they are dead for good. FEA is nicer in that regard because they have a Casual game mode that [veterans shun due to its ease] makes units "faint" rather than "die". FEA also promotes marriages with unlockable children units, whose stats and appearance are determined by their parents, and even promotes bromances. One character even looks way too much like a girl. XD If you ever want to try out FE, I'd recommend FEA [3DS] because of the Casual mode, although ROMs and a few older FE games may have similar. || Oh, I changed the title.)
