no he wasnt
yea a real korean wouldve been too busy playing brood war to have an irl best friend
i remember in middle school my best friends were these two korean exchange students
and i went to hang out with one of them at his house one day, and he showed me starcraft and told me that everybody in korea played starcraft and that it was the most popular game there
baffled, i asked why. surely a man straight from korea could explain this to me
"i dont know, it just is" he said
ill never know.....
well a big reason is was violent games were basically banned, so CS which was basically the other huge game of that era, was not a thing in Korea at all -- but sc/bw were and they were a fairly popular game as is, then take away like all the violent "competitors" to it such as cs/quake and... the game selection lended itself to make sc bw get so popular.
as for why a game became a sport at all, i don't really know but i've heard korean affinity for gaming/online lifestyle is in large part due to the very separating "class system" they have going on, where you really only associate with people of similar economic background, people your exact age, and people who are similarly as good or bad at school as you -- so if you had poor "stats" in any of those, online, where those things don't get in the way of interaction, becomes much more appealing
