In the late 21st century, Earth was diseased, polluted and vastly overpopulated. Earth's wealthiest inhabitants fled the planet to preserve their way of life while the rest were forced to stay on earth despite it's conditions. It's 2154, and a small number of people reside on a luxurious space habitat called Elysium, but the vast majority of the human race live on an overpopulated and devastated Earth. Elysium's citizens live in absolute comfort and regularly use medical devices called Med-Bays to cure any disease and injury, even reverse the aging process or give themselves whole new bodies and faces. The people on Earth do not have access to the Med-Bays and live amongst ruins that were destroyed.

Things were peaceful for those who lived on Elysium for years. The government allowed those on Earth to at least live despite the conditions. However, a coup d 'etat occurred a few years ago and things haven't been the same. The government began to clear out sectors of the Earth in hopes that one day the best of the human race could one day return to Earth. This meant that they were slowly destroying what was left of the buildings and human life on earth. People were forced underground or anywhere that they wouldn't be caught by the government. The people on Elysium, for the most part, do not know how things have changed, believing that they are just as they have always as been.

Years ago, the highest powers of the world created something known as Elysium, which was a refuge and a place to keep the human race alive while the Earth suffered from what the human race did to it. These people decided that the wealthiest people around the Earth lives were most valuable and were the only ones allowed up, which you can imagine caused a lot of rioting and such. They turn they other cheek at the suffering of those on Earth and many conduct their businesses there, forcing Earth inhabitants to do jobs for barely any pay. However, with a change of power in the last few years things are beginning to change. Elysium workers are starting to clear out the Earth sector by sector, as they call it. This means that they are destroying the remainder of buildings and even killing people. Their goal is to rebuild and greater Earth so that one day, Elysium citizens will be able to return to the Earth. By killing of Earth Inhabitants only the greatest of the human race will be left.

Most Elysium citizens have lived in space their whole lives. Their lives are filled with nothing but luxury and the best type of treatment. Remember, that the people who left Earth were some of the wealthiest people around the world. They have access to the greatest breakthrough in technology which are the med-bays that can reverse and stop the aging process and also treat someone of any disease. Note, that while the government hides a great deal of information from its citizens regarding Earth, everyone knows that a bigger population inhabits the ground. However, many citizens in Elysium regard these people as dirty and would rather die than breathe their air. That isn't to say that no one on Elysium doesn't feel compassion for the 'inhabitants.'

There is nothing luxurious about living on Earth. The aftermath of the outbreak of disease and pollution left nothing but ruins for those who were forced to stay on Earth to live in. There are small compounds, or clusters, of people all over the Earth who stay together and do their best to survive. Most of these are located underground beneath what's left of any buildings Now that the government is upping their antics, surviving is becoming harder especially when you don't have med-bays to cure you of any disease. The compound that our story takes place in resides in Los Angeles, California.
