how can i have my panels be centered instead of it having that awkward empty space in the left or right side?

#columns{width: ##px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; float: none; position: relative;}

If you haven't assigned widths or margins for your columns yet, the default width would be about 1100px for this.
If you did change the default formatting, then just guess and check yourself for a number which will fit ;o (or make your profile public)
