Tute Sweet
I get that ALL the time with our rabbit.
I jokingly complain about something he's done, and the response is always "OH I know who'll be in the pot tonight then! Lawl!" or someone'll come into my house and he'll hop up to greet them, and they'll say something like "not much eatin' on this little fella!" or "are you fattening him up for supper?"
Har har.

I'm not actually offended by it, to be honest, but I hear it so often it's just embarrassing when someone thinks they're being funny. It's too obvious and unoriginal to be humorous.
It has upset my daughter a few times though, she's too little to know people are "joking" about eating her bunny. THEN I do get pissy at people over it.
I threaten Daisy with being made into stew if she eats another cord.....
Her full name has become Daisy Stu. (so we have Daisy Stu, Oreo Cookie, and Puff Ball/ Cream Puff)
I don't joke around children though like you said like your daugher kids don't understand it is a joke.
Most jokes I can handle about my pets, but for me other than eating the rabbits, the snakes eating the rodents, the cat eating the rodents, or my how they WILL kill my spider if they see it....
The last one they are told if they are serious they are never allowed in my house, if you don't like my spider keep your a** down stairs.
