In Depth look into the idea:
TekTek.org has already made a great intuitive system for layering! Why not Gaia?
Check it out Here
In 'Customize Me' To be able to control where any item is in front of or behind another. having commands like 'bring item forward' and 'move item back'. that would move one item in front of another layer of items. there would also be a set to default button that would have all the items move back to the gaian standard.
this makes many diffrent avatars availible. so you nolonger does wearing a onepiece swimsuit mean wearing it over your pants. [unless you want to... itd be under your control!].
this also makes it easier for the gaian staff because they don't have to fix it when certain items are in front of items they arnt supposed to be. [like the swimsuit example]
Note: If anyone uses Flash to make movies/images I imagine the system to work like the layers on Flash.
Heres an example of what it might look/behave like.

I figure it would be alot easier.. instead of those commands. Your clothes would layer in the order you put them on. Say you wanted a shirt under your dress - put your shirt on first, then the dress. Or, if you wanted the shirt over your dress - put the dress on first, then the shirt.
This is also a good idea! but it might get confusing when you get one new item and have to unequip everything to place it right where you want it.

I was just thinking of a great system to set this up!
Maybe Ill make an edit, but Ill try to explain:
The customizing space is parted in 3 sections:
1. On the left the avi, displaying the items you equip.
2. In the middle, the list of items you can click on to equip.
3. On the right, a list of all selected items, which you can layer yourself.
The system would work very simple. Click on an item(2). The avi on the left will equip or take off the item you selected(1). When you equip an item(2), the item will be added to the layerlist(3), when you take it off, itll disappear out of the layerlist again. The layerlist(3) works just as simple like the Inventory aranger.
How does that sound?^-^
