Quote:
He never promoted death.

He did.

He criticised hebrews for not following the law which said that children who oppose their parents should be stoned to death,

"For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition."

- Matthew, 15:4-6
Depends on the religion really, the values and morals of each on can differ slightly. Originally the intentions of most are good however they tend to get twisted by the very creatures that follow them: humans. Lets use Christianity as an example, essentially it claims to be a peaceful faith and indeed I know alot of very nice Christians. However power hungry men can easily twist it to get what they want, the priesthood in the middle ages is a good example of this. Religion does also promote goodwill towards your fellow man though and does act as a way of keeping innatly bloodthirsty people in line... for the most part whichever one you may follow... unless the philosophy encourages it...
