I say a date's when you make plans to do something with that special someone. Hanging out with friends is called "hanging out".

I consider a "date" as going (out) somewhere with the intent of getting to know someone on a more romantic level. I consider going to the movies with a boyfriend or crush a date. Going to the movies with a friend is just hanging out. I also do not consider going on one date automatically means that you are in a relationship either.
