Welcome to Gaia! ::

There was an article I read that said the moon was in a closer orbit to the Earth during the month of March. It is called the Supermoon and happens once every 20 years. It increases the risk of earthquakes and tsunamis happening.

So my theory is that the Supermoon is the cause of that tremendous earthquake that occored on March 11th.

Interesting theory...can you provide a link to the article?

yeah i read that article too, people were freaking out about the world ending because of it,
supermoon is just when the moon is full and close to earth,
this is the closest it's ever been though (from what i've heard)
it makes sense.

No, it did not.

Quote:
False: The Japanese earthquake on March 11 is an example of a supermoon causing earthly effects. Not only is this untrue, the March 11 moon shows exactly the opposite, since the moon is not particularly close to Earth on March 11, nor is it full or new moon (aligned with the sun and Earth). In fact, the moon on March 11 is close to first quarter--at a right angle to the Earth/sun line. Thus--according to the supermoon-earthquake connection theory--the moon’s effect on earthly water and solid rock tides should be at its least today.

well, the supermoon didn't cause the earthquake. The earthquake happened two weeks before the supermoon, and the article I provided explains why it's not true.

earthquakes are caused by the faults on the earth's surface, which cause tsunamis, not the moon

The gravity of the moon does have an effect of the give of the tetonic plates which cause earthquakes.
