Makes sense. A person getting their masters studying memes could very well have a future in advertisement. Corporations have been using memes for decades, even before there was an internet, to sell their products to the hopeless masses of sheep willing to buy from the wolves.

In fact, if you think about how merchants back centuries ago used word of mouth to advertise their products and get lowly peasants to spend their hard-earned wages on their goods, memes have been in practice since the dawn of civilization. A meme in essence is merely an "idea virus", words and imagery designed to spread ideas between people through visual and aural stimulation.

Memes not only include what you see on the internet, but advertising, literature, religion, politics, philosophy, music, and art, among other things. Pretty much anything that could be considered an idea could be considered a meme, especially if it's catchy. My guess is that this person who has decided to study memes may understand this, or will understand it while studying for her masters.
