Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith (ryt) says Nick Lamb was home alone and sleeping without his hearing aids when the fire began Wednesday.

She says Ace licked Nick's face until he awoke to find the house filling with smoke. The boy quickly covered his nose and mouth with his T-shirt and fled outside. He was not injured in the fire.

The boy told firefighters this was the first summer he was old enough to stay home alone and that he had returned from summer camp just three days earlier.

Firefighters estimated damage to the home at $175,000.

At least he had Ace

Wintry Dragon

Good doggie.

Wonder what caused the fire? Are spiders involved?
Just another reason to love dogs.

Why do people always assume the animal does it out of love or some s**t? They can't open doors with their paws, folks. They know the only way they are gonna make it through this is if they get at least one of their humans to help them get the ******** out of there. Now, in cases where the animal goes BACK into the burning house to pull out a person or other living creature, that I would consider loyalty, love and bravery. Not saying the dog doesn't love the kid, just pointing out that even if it didn't love him, it would have woken him up since a human would be his only sure way of getting out of the house and away from the danger. Animals have a driving need to survive too.

I'm guessing you've never heard stories or seen videos of dogs who can easily open doors with either their paws or mouths, especially if the door has one of those horizontal door handles (traditional round handles are harder for them, but they can do it if they choose to try)
