The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has urged the entire electorate to vote in the “world’s first global election” by switching off their lights on Saturday, March 28, 2009; 8:30 – 9:30 PM against the growing threat of global warming.
“The COMELEC enjoins the Philippine electorate to vote for Mother Earth by participating in the global lights out on Saturday night. By switching off our lights on Earth Hour, we join hands with a billion people across the world in standing up against the growing threat of global warming,” stated COMELEC spokesman James Arthur Jimenez.
Jimenez said the poll body is even encouraging its employees and partners nationwide to join in the global effort.
Over 74 countries and territories worldwide have signified their commitment to “VOTE EARTH” during Earth Hour and that the number is growing by the day, the Earth Hour website (http://www.earthhour.org) stated.
“We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations,” the website added.
“On Saturday night, let us take part on the first ever global vote. Vote wisely, Vote for Mother Earth,” said Jimenez.
