Welcome to Gaia! ::

Welcome to Rainbow of Ribbons! It is a Cancer Awareness, charity, and contest thread all rolled into one. Our main purpose is to bring the Gaian Community awareness all year. It's very fitting that it was created in April as April is Cancer Awareness Month. But we don't just get cancers one month out of the year do we? No.

About me: I am a cancer survivor. Please feel free to share your experiences here. Whether they're about you having cancer, having defeated cancer, or about your journey with a loved one who has it.

About the cause: I am here to bring you cancer awareness along with any thread mods. I will also be giving donations out to those with Cancer and survivors- please be honest, and there are contests! We also have items for sale. Please feel free to share your experiences here.

If you keep reading you'll find thread mods and rules in this post, then information and statistics on the cancers out there, then you'll find the colors of ribbons for each cancer, then what we're selling to give donations to survivors, then contests, then our list of donations, donators, and who we've donated to. Lastly is our links in and affiliates along with several reserved posts.

If you want to donate to our cause, please feel free to send me a trade labeled donation. If you want to affiliate please pm me. If you want to be a thread mod please talk to me. And if you want a donation please share your story here, and your quest list.

This list of common cancer types includes cancers that are diagnosed with the greatest frequency in the United States, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers:
Bladder Cancer, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Melanoma, Colon and Rectal Cancer, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Endometrial Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Kidney (Renal Cell) Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Leukemia, and Thyroid Cancer. Brain Tumor's are also listed.

Here is a bit about each kind listed. All information and statistics were taken from HERE. Informations on rare and less common cancers can be found there as well. Information on Childhood Cancers and treatments can be found HERE.

Bladder Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the bladder (the organ that stores urine). Most bladder cancers are transitional cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in cells that normally make up the inner lining of the bladder). Other types include squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that begins in thin, flat cells) and adenocarcinoma (cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). The cells that form squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma develop in the inner lining of the bladder as a result of chronic irritation and inflammation.
Estimated new cases and deaths from bladder cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 72,570
Deaths: 15,210

Brain Tumor
The growth of abnormal cells in the tissues of the brain. Brain tumors can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer).

Estimated new cases and deaths from brain and other nervous system cancers in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 23,130
Deaths: 14,080

Breast Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the n****e) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare.

Estimated new cases and deaths from breast cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 232,340 (female); 2,240 (male)
Deaths: 39,620 (female); 410 (male)]

Colon and Rectal Cancer
Colon Cancer forms in the tissues of the colon (the longest part of the large intestine). Most colon cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).

Rectal Cancer forms in the tissues of the rectum (the last several inches of the large intestine closest to the a**s).

Estimated new cases and deaths from colon and rectal cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 102,480 (colon); 40,340 (rectal)
Deaths: 50,830 (colon and rectal combined)

Endometrial Cancer
Cancer that forms in the tissue lining the uterus (the small, hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis in which a fetus develops). Most endometrial cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).

Estimated new cases and deaths from endometrial (uterine corpus) cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 49,560
Deaths: 8,190

Kidney Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the kidneys. Kidney cancer includes renal cell carcinoma (cancer that forms in the lining of very small tubes in the kidney that filter the blood and remove waste products) and renal pelvis carcinoma (cancer that forms in the center of the kidney where urine collects). It also includes Wilms tumor, which is a type of kidney cancer that usually develops in children under the age of 5.

Estimated new cases and deaths from kidney (renal cell and renal pelvis) cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 65,150
Deaths: 13,680

Leukemia
Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of blood cells to be produced and enter the bloodstream.

Estimated new cases and deaths from leukemia in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 48,610
Deaths: 23,720

Lung Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages. The two main types are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These types are diagnosed based on how the cells look under a microscope.

Estimated new cases and deaths from lung cancer (non-small cell and small cell combined) in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 228,190
Deaths: 159,480

Melanoma
A form of cancer that begins in melanocytes (cells that make the pigment melanin). It may begin in a mole (skin melanoma), but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines.

Estimated new cases and deaths from melanoma in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 76,690
Deaths: 9,480

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Any of a large group of cancers of lymphocytes (white blood cells). Non-Hodgkin lymphomas can occur at any age and are often marked by lymph nodes that are larger than normal, fever, and weight loss. There are many different types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. These types can be divided into aggressive (fast-growing) and indolent (slow-growing) types, and they can be formed from either B-cells or T-cells. B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas include Burkitt lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, immunoblastic large cell lymphoma, precursor B-lymphoblastic lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma. T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas include mycosis fungoides, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma. Lymphomas that occur after bone marrow or stem cell transplantation are usually B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Prognosis and treatment depend on the stage and type of disease. Also called NHL.

Estimated new cases and deaths from non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 69,740
Deaths: 19,020

Pancreatic Cancer
A disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. Also called exocrine cancer.

Estimated new cases and deaths from pancreatic cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 45,220
Deaths: 38,460

Prostate Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men.

Estimated new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 238,590
Deaths: 29,720

Thyroid Cancer
Cancer that forms in the thyroid gland (an organ at the base of the throat that makes hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight). Four main types of thyroid cancer are papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer. The four types are based on how the cancer cells look under a microscope.

Estimated new cases and deaths from thyroid cancer in the United States in 2013:

New cases: 60,220
Deaths: 1,850
