I think it's questionable to why they decided to name the website after a Greek goddess. smile
I assume that Gaia, being the "personification of the Earth," was used by Gaia Online to give the sense that its forums are used to connect worldwide.

Gaia is also greek word for Earth

given the site was called go-gaia back in the day one would take a guess that they were going for the Earth translation

I thought it was just, you know, Earth.

I was hoping that there was something to actually discuss here. There weren't even any Earth-Mother tits in that article.

The thought of Gaia's many children is what spurs me on when thinking about this. I almost feel disappointed that all the founders took from the mythology was the title and meaning.

To see something in relation to Typhon or Aphrodite would be a nice surprise.

By saying it's "questionable", you seem to be implying that there's some sort of ulterior motive. Are you suggesting that there's some weird reason they chose the name? "Gaia" means "Earth" or "World" in Greek, and since GaiaOnline presents itself as one, it makes perfect sense. Besides, the name "Gaia" has been used for many things:

* Firefox's User Interface
* A European spacecraft
* A crater on one of Jupiter's moons
* A world in the anime Escaflowne
* The world of FF VII
* The NOAA's supercomputer
* An environmental hypothesis
* A river in Romania
* A mutant member of Marvel's Generation X

Do you find it equally questionable why someone would name these...

...after the half-snake Greek goddess known as the "Mother of all Monsters"?

I just don't understand your suspicion...

Well, how could you understand my suspicion without understanding my gullible and ignorant nature? I enjoy questioning everything. As for the small spiny Echidna.. That is just amazing to know.
Never once did I know that there was little Echidna's running around somewhere before now. biggrin

It could be a threat if you sat on it, or if you pet it the wrong way...

Knuckles biggrin I could have swore that he was a Hedgehog instead of an Echidna.. Though.

Gaia basically is referring to Earth. It does date back farther than the Greeks, but still means Mother Earth. It doesn't really matter does it you can call it anything and still it wouldn't change.
