INTERVIEWS

Maybe you've always wanted to get into one of those addictive and engrossing online community gaming worlds, but don't want to invest the time or money it takes to engage with a game like World of Warcraft or Everquest. If so, keep an eye out for the new free massively multiplayer online game in the works from the creators of Gaia Online, a popular interactive online hangout for teens and young adults, which boasts more than 5 million unique visitors a month.
Gaia Online MMO promises to be accessible and easy to enjoy for first timers and seasoned online gamers alike. With this new game, Gaia hopes to create an open environment for people of all ages to play games, meet friends, and explore. I spoke to the Senior Game Developer from Gaia Online, Dave Georgeson, who gave me an online demo of Gaia Online MMO in action.

The storyline behind the game begins with a strange phenomenon in the Gaia universe: Inanimate objects spontaneously come to life and wreak havoc. Your character's quest is to explore and battle different monsters to uncover the truth. The game has its own streaming soundtrack of original and licensed music. And though it's free, players can buy premium items that will enhance their gameplay.

Gaia Online MMO will reportedly be more flexible than traditional MMOs. You're not locked into any particular world in the game, so you can jump from world to world to play with your friends. You're also not stuck with a specific type of character. Instead of powering up your character, you power up rings with different skills and powers which you can swap, trade, sell, or share with friends. Gaia Online MMO, like the online community it was derived from, is more focused on giving gamers a fun way to socialize with each other than with grinding away for hours completing tasks and honing items.

The game's creators hope to give players a game with robust, deep game play that is easy to pick up right away and play with friends. The game's Flash-based, so there's nothing to download, and it can be accessed from anywhere you can get an Internet connection.

Gaia reps said the MMO would have a lighter, tongue-in-cheek take on the genre. It looks like they want to give gamers the MMO playing experience minus the rigid structure and grueling work. If you're the serious kind of gamer that derives satisfaction from slaving over your characters and enjoying the hard earned fruits of your labor in the online battlefield, Gaia Online MMO might not be for you. But for those looking for a fun game to play with friends, Gaia Online MMO might be right up your alley.
Gaia Online MMO will be drawing from an already massive community of Gaia Online users, the site boost the second largest forums on the Web after Yahoo, so once the game goes live you should have plenty of people to play with. Of course we still have to see if the game makers can deliver the goods. I pleaded, but they're not letting anyone try out the game until they've ironed some programming bugs. However, they did promise to hook us up with some invites once the site goes into private beta, so hopefully we'll be able to give you a chance to give Gaia Online MMO a test drive in a couple of weeks.

Ten Ton Hamster had the chance to sit down with some awesome people from Gaia Online to talk about their upcoming MMOG. They showed us some cool new screenshots and gave us lots more information to salivate over! It’s just enough of a teaser to keep us wanting more! Gaia online will be going into closed beta ‘extremely soon’ and have a full game launch by the end of this summer. Read below to catch all the updated info:
1. Tell us about the storyline behind the MMOG
It begins that as the player’s come into the game, there are these inanimate objects that have begun to come to life and nobody knows why. Things like stone carvings and statues, sand begins to form into something, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
2. How large is the world?
There are currently 16 areas in the world and there are other areas that are not on the map which can only be accessed by quests or missions. There will be more expansions packs after launch into lands that players know about as well as into lands they have never heard of. It is much bigger than we expected it to be at launch but it just kept growing and growing.
3. What makes Gaia different from other MMOG’s?
Players will be able to do quests, defeat monsters, and get loot like other typical MMOG’s but there is a lot more to it beyond that. We have a 55% female and 45% male audience so we had to make it more than just a combat-driven game. So, there are a lot of socialized games like ones that you can play as a group, where there are tiles displayed on the floor and different people have to repeat the rhythm that was shown to them. There is also a golf game out in Village Green where there are monsters everywhere and players fighting all around you while you are trying to hit your golf ball. In addition there are sandtraps that spawn monsters while you are trying to hit your ball. All of these things are designed to get you around other players to form friendships and bonds.
4. Can you tell us more about the Ring System?
Typically in other games you create a character and pick a class that gives you skills that you are locked into. You might build up a skill tree but you will not have abilities that other classes might have. However in Gaia, the players have already developed characters on our site that they love the look and feel of that they don’t want to change. We didn’t want to create a bunch of items that the players were forced to wear on their avatar and then they wouldn’t be able to look the way they wanted to. One of the things we wanted to preserve was that personality. Instead, we focused on making the skills into rings. The rings can be worn in any arrangement that you want. As you find rings throughout the world, you will be able to change your skill set. Players will be able to do that any time by just coming back to the Null Chamber. You can be a tank one minute, go back to the Null chamber, switch out your rings, and Voila! You are a healer. You can be anything you want to day to day. Players will be able to ‘class’ themselves a bit because let’s say if they have 4 rings of a special set they will get special bonus powers. For example if you have 4 rings from the Ninja set, players will get the stealth orientated bonuses like increase to your dodge and accuracy.
How many sets will be in the game?
Currently we have 4: Ninja, Pirate, Chef, and Medic. But we will be adding many more as time goes on. The Chef is a buff oriented class. There are buffs, debuffs, and things like ‘Maximum Health’ or ‘Pot-lid’ which is a deflection spell.
6. What is the Null Chamber?
It is a place you can come to after you’ve been defeated by monsters to change your skills through your rings and power up items so that you can become more advanced and stronger. No one knows where this Null chamber is…it’s sort of a mystery in the plot line.
7. You mentioned wanting to preserve the look of the players’ Avatars. As it is now, the players are going to simply walk into the MMOG and look however they look now?
Yes, they can come in their prom dress! One of the important things about this is we are not a separate product from the rest of the site. We are very heavily integrated into the Gaia Online experience. It is a seamless transition into the MMOG. There were 3 basic rules when we began designing: 1. We Shall Not Change the Avatar, 2. Risk=Reward, 3. Must be present to win!
8. Tell us about G’hi Energy
That G’hi energy is a bar that fills up when players are around other people. The longer you play around others; you will accumulate what is called G-Buffs. These buffs are passive and are there all the time, however the longer you are with others the stronger your buffs are. For example if you G-gauge is at 85% then your buffs will function at 85%. So, if you hang around other people you essentially recharge the battery that drives those powers. This encourages grouping and hanging out in social places. If you are a solo player you might want to come to town to recharge your G’hi Energy and be tougher, but you don’t have to.
9. Tell us about the Training Sequence.
You begin your training sequence on you guessed it: A Train! You will learn your game basics like movement, dialogue, and quest stuff…but it very quickly becomes a ‘runaway train’ situation. You have to disconnect the automan system and manually throw the break on the train before you get to the end of the line. Once you complete that, we move you onto some fun combat training and some baby quests in a Newbi-only area, where only other Newbies exist. Once you complete your training you can move into the sewers, where you will see other players and you can remain there for as long as you want. When you are done with the sewers and are comfortable with the game you move into Bartontown and you can never return. So it always stays a permanent newbie-friendly area.
10. Is there any talk about Pets coming?
We have some features that we are very seriously ‘glued’ into for after release. They will be very cool as a monster-possession kind of feature that will open the door for pets. We will definitely have pets it’s just a matter of time.
11. Craig what is your favorite part of Gaia Online?
Gaia allows players to explore their identity and who they want to be. They can be more than they are in the real world. People come to play, but they stay because they met their best friend!”
David Georgeson says “One of the reasons I particularly like the Gaia Style is because it lets us do so much. We are not locked into elves and dwarves or sci-fi. We can do all kinds of things. We make puns about topical stuff and referential humor. We have things like instead of a mini-map we have a GPS…all things like that. It makes it feel more contemporary.”
Craig Sherman says “Two years ago, we asked the members of Gaia (who also came up with the name “Gaia” itself. In Greek it means Goddess of the Earth) what they wanted most. Their number one answer was an MMO and their number 2 answer was Pets.
