Embarrassing computer mistakes.

Well, I'm somewhat organized with my pronz pictures, and I keep them in the same folder, since I'm the only person who uses my computer. Well, for some reason, back then I wanted to have a screen saver, so I made it play random images of my dragon folder...but I forgot I had, special images in that folder too...some while later, I took a shower, leaving my door open so my room could air out, screen saver went on, luck had it only a roommate saw, but yah sweatdrop

I fixed my friend’s PC once. The graphics card’s fan had ceased to work for whatever reason, and the images it output looked like memory corruption, because, well, it’s either that or inadequate graphics cooling, and luckily it was the latter.

I told him to get the same-sized fan and put it on.

He did so, and he came back to me saying, “Yay, now it works like it did a few months ago. Now to get it working like before it did all this crap”. That meaning spyware removal and everything... and a rather severe case at that.

was working on a computer and was unsure which way to plug in the usb on the motherboard.

so i went and got the first thing i could find which happened to be my mp3 player. plugged it in and ZAP. it still plays music but it wont ever hook up to a computer again.

oh well at least it was one i found on the side of the road. but it was my only small one.

I use to have a little computer with a mini ATX board in it that I used as a media center for my apt. Well one day I decided the little fella needed some updates including a new video card. So I set out and ordered all sorts of new goodies for my neglected and outdated media comp.
Three days later I received a package full of delicious electronics for my to play with. Unfortunatly the previous night I had been out drinking with some friends and had acquired a hangover of monumental proportions.
So I the first thing I installed was my video card since it was what I was most excited about. Suddenly I hear this clicking noise and my comp seems to be taking a minute too long to boot up. My friend Josh [who had crashed at my place] goes "Whats that clicking noise?"
Suddenly... SMOKE!
My little comp crashes..... crying
You see... I had ordered a bigger power supply for it since the new card required more power... but I had forgotten this VITAL piece of information in the stupidity of my hangover.

*sigh*

I was so sad and yet so hilarious at the same time. sweatdrop

I just remembered some mishaps I had the first time I used BeOS:

The copy and move operations in BeOS's tracker have some rather unusual defaults. If a destination directory exists, and you select to overwrite, copy and move will simply delete the destination directories and all their contents.

The move operation deletes the source files when they are copied - not after their parent directory has had all its contents copied as the mv command does.

This came as a surprise to me.

I lost half my porn and half my MP3s this way. gonk

Anywho, my most embarrassing computer mistakes are usually little things like trying to use a keyboard that's not plugged into the computer or something. It's kind of understandable though, since it always happens on computers at work that we're ghosting.

"WHY WON'T THIS DAMN THING BOOT TO THE GHOST CD! I'M PRESSING F12 FOR THE BOOT MENU!!!!"

Back in high school, the IT (they were CS back then) guys hated me cause I was always screwing with things... One day, they upgraded the system and our student drives said they had an infinite amount of space allocated, so I did a Debug on a nonexistent file and set the file size to something around 500 gigs. It froze a minute in to saving, and since I had to reset the comp, the file was never complete, so I had an un-deletable file taking up the entire student data partition. They got pissed, naturally. I still say it was their own fault for not setting a limit correctly.

When I took it apart, there was this little plastic wall in the middle, and a capacitor had emptied its guts all over it. lol

I've blown up a PSU before. Apparently they don't like metal objects too much.

The computer was still under warranty, though, so I gave Lenovo a call, pulled a sob story, and a technician was on-site the next morning, 9 am.

10 minutes for him to replace it - I was hardly awake, and it was all better.
