My facebook has been blowing up with posts about misogyny in the tech world, but sometimes that misogyny isn't coming from Uber or similar startups.

http://www.dailydot.com/geek/barbie-engineer-book-girls-game-developers/

To quickly summarize, a Barbie book was produced in which Barbie proves herself incompetent with computers and has the men do all the work for her while she takes credit.

I'm curious to see what the C&T's opinions on this are. Personally, I'm really disappointed because I like to wear pink, look sexy, and when I am a terrible person and "use men" to help me code it's me claiming that we're pair programming while I'm really just having them watch me code so that they can catch my syntax errors (such as forgetting a semicolon or misspelling a variable name). Why can't Barbie be like that?

I think you're misunderstood, that's called a tutor. You're learning to code even if you already know how to code.

Although this book or whatever is pretty silly.

Saying that someone to catch my syntax errors is a tutor is similar to calling the person who says "you missed a spot" is your tutor. If I misspell the word function as "funtion" and someone catches me on it I'm learning absolutely nothing. The fact of the matter is that I just missed the C key.

I would actually call that a "real-time proofreader". Pretty much any half decent place will proofread stuff especially if it's to be released externally.

Hint: Make sure s**t has had proofreading done on it before I see it because otherwise I will pick up errors. That ability has to be used carefully because otherwise people will get highly ******** off with me.

Oh I was thinking differently to that. Sorry.

On the subject of "using someone else", there's an actual technique called "pair programming" that involves two people working on the same code together and proofreading each others code.

It's more people tend to get pissed off that I can point out errors so quickly.

That actually makes a load of sense. I've been known to test out my assignments on the folks where the question is to essentially write a technical paper for non technical people. Also had mum test out a short video I made as well. Don't worry she was in the credits.

In pair programming, it's not really a "getting someone to be my proof-reader/editor" sort of thing. It's more of a collaboration of equals (even if one is more experienced than the other).

You're not "using" the other person, you're cooperating with them.

My team sometimes uses pair programming when two people have different domain-specific knowledge/experience which is relevant to solving the problem. Or when we want someone to get up-to-speed on a part of the code-base that they're not familiar with.

It's one of the major components of XP (extreme programming).

I've seen two common modes of pair programming. The first is where two people sit side by side and SHARE the keyboard (sharing is important, because both parties need to be actively engaged in the process). The second is where they side by side, but one person writes the function and the other writes the unit test for the function.

I know. That's what I claim I'm doing when I sit them down, but because nobody seems to know how to navigate, live-proofreading is what actually happens. Which I don't mind. The majority of web developers I've met that understand how to pair program don't understand how to program and when I genuinely pair with them I have to do at least half of the driving via voice and all of the navigating.

Honestly if Nuance released Dragon NaturallyProgramming I would never pair program again if I could help it. It'd be the same experience except with a lot less stupidity.

There's a lot of pair programming obsessed startups I've noticed with stations specifically made for it. 2 keyboards, 2 monitors, 2 mice, one desktop. Or remotely, two computers, one stypi session. The latter one is hell in lower languages and I've had to do it at least 50 times now.

The few times I had a decent partner I enjoyed pair programming at said stations.
