Wild Sage could only taste the acrid burning of exertion and heavy breathing settling deep into his throat. He had way too many small animals back at home to live for - well, he supposed Wasp would probably take care of them once he heard that his friend had died, but that really wasn't the ideal way for this to play out.

Here it was. The hill's crest. Westward Bound narrowed his eyes at the other kin joining him here. He might be able to beat them...

But either way, it would be again a victory for Westfen.

Screaming, Wild Sage crested the hill - when had he started climbing that damned hill? - and sailed right past the winner's circle, almost tumbling down the far side. Good luck tracking him down to give him his prize.

Or maybe good luck won't be needed after all, because the sound of snapping teeth at his heels is enough to cause Sage to stumble at the base of the hill, falling in a confusion of limbs and pounding heart. Even if he could have gotten his legs back in order, he'd had the wind knocked out of him - this is it, he thought. I'm done for. Why did I have to do that stupid thing. This will probably not be the last time he thinks a thought like this.
