I was actually thinking something similar to this. But, what if the character is from a published series, but the outfit they're wearing is of fan origin?

if it is a well know character that has a copyright then its cosplay. as soon as you add something of your own style or based off of a fans work then it is an original version of that character thus not being a cosplay of THAT character it is an original version

a cosplay is based off of a known copyrighted character that is part of a franchise. and original character is usually fan fiction based or amateur design. Say you have a cosplay of say my character link.

you have everything down and made to look like the character from as specific version of a certain game it is a cosplay

BUT if you add some other items that seem link like or you liked on the avi..then now its not a cosplay you made it into an original version because you are not going strictly based off of the franchise character design

Also IF you mix versions of the links from multiple ages it is now not a cosplay for there is no such link that is a mashup from different games.
