disenchanted's no-frills book illustration contest

Hi. I'm having an art contest. Why? Because I have all of this old stuff that I won in contests and don't need anymore. I'd like to make this interesting and entertaining for all... that means no avatar art, no original character art, no huge list of rules and specifications, etc.

Your task: Illustrate a scene from one of your favorite books.
It can be from a classic like Jane Eyre, something trendy like Twilight, or silly like Dr. Seuss. Try something new, experiment with a different style, different media, or different subject matter. (You should get something out of this, too, ya know?)

Clarification: Your illustration should be inspired by an author's text. (This is not simply a fanart/character illustration contest.)

Rules
Be nice. Follow Gaia's Terms of Service. That means nothing explicit, hateful, copyrighted or otherwise not entirely yours. You may use any medium... digital, traditional, sculpture, mixed, etc. Please no cheesy photoshop filters. You may enter more than once, although you might consider putting all your effort into one fantabulous piece.

Judging
The goal of this contest is to convert words into an image. The quote/text you provide in your entry will be used in the judging process, so the more info the better. I'll also be judging on other aspects... not just technical ability, but also other things such as, well, I don't know... maybe "use of color to portray emotion." Things like that. Moving outside your comfort zone will get you points, too.

Prizes prizes prizes!
(Item prices taken from tektek.org as of Dec 2008... please let me know if they look way off - I know that the Gaia Museum has different prices.)

FAQ

Why are you holding a contest if you aren't getting anything out of it (avi art, etc.)?
I feel like I wasted a lot of time doing character art when I could have been improving my skills in realism or other aspects. If people are going to take the time to enter this contest, I'd rather that they learn something new or get practice doing something that will help them outside of the anime/Gaia world.

Can I just draw my favorite literary character?
Not quite... your picture should illustrate what is described by an author's words. The whole point is to convert words into an image.

Does my entry have to have a character in it?
Nope! You may illustrate any scene. In fact, this is encouraged especially if you usually do a lot of character art.

Will I automatically win something if I illustrate one of your favorite books?
Nope! This contest isn't about me and what I like... it's about Gaia artists doing something different for a change.

Does my entry have to have text on the actual image?
Nope.

Arg! I don't have a copy of the book I want to illustrate.
Get thee to a library!

Can anyone enter? Can I enter more than once?
Yep. There is no limit on the total number of entries.

May I send you my WIP for a critique?
Sure, just PM me with a link.

Can the text be a poem?
Yep.

Someone already used the book I want to use... can I still enter?
Of course.

Can the original text be in another language?
Sure, as long as you can translate it into English.

May I illustrate something I wrote myself?
Hmm... I suppose, but haven't you ever been inspired by someone else?

Hey! I've seen that entry somewhere else! They stole it!
Please PM me with info and a link to the original.

I'm about joining. My question is, are we allowed to do scenes from mangas, as long as we draw it from our own point of view?

I'm going to try but boy, I haven't read a book that I'd want to draw in years D:
The last book I've read, from about a month or so ago, was the most boring book I've ever read.
I'm going to use a childhood book.... .___.

I'm going to need to learn how to draw animals D:

this looks like a very interesting contest!

Of course you can do whatever you'd like... but the idea is to draw something based only on the description rather than already-drawn characters. But if it inspires you, go for it!
