Especially want to discuss her appearances in the comics, namely The Promise and The Search. Have always found Ty Lee to be a really fun and interesting character and was at first very gratified to see her in her new Kyoshi Warrior garb in The Promise, but.. she was used so little, esp compared to Suki. Both Suki and Ty Lee have spent extended periods of time with Zuko before- Suki with Team Avatar, and Ty Lee in childhood and a short friendly reunion later (The Beach era), so whyy does only Suki get to do anything (Talk a lot, follow Zuko) as a guard? ?__?

Undoubtedly she's of higher rank than Ty Lee, so okay, let Suki talk. But there's no indication at all that Ty Lee's even thinking about Zuko, being concerned for him like Suki is, and it's boring and disappointing and, odd, no? In The Beach, Ty Lee seems to really obviously know Zuko well enough and care for him, and Zuko...there's no indications anywhere he likes Ty Lee; so that's also interesting, act/expand on that.

Additionally, there's the scene where Ty Lee chi blocks Azula. This inspires questions- what does Ty Lee think about Azula? The previous time Ty Lee attacked Azula was almost undoubtedly the first, and I've always been floating between two notions for why she did it. One; to protect Mai. Two; to prevent a fight between friends. While certainly fearful of Azula, didn't Ty Lee always still seem to sincerely care for her as a friend...? They grew up together, played together, and Ty Lee, I think very obviously, had a lot of respect (rightfully so) for this super powerful princess. When she hit Azula, it definitely could also have carried with it a ton of defiance against Azula in general; it could totally possibly have been a demonstration of Ty Lee once and for all attempting to end their friendship. But that s**t is tough, and not so easily done. All of this, if accurate, can still be true in the moment Ty Lee strikes Azula again in The Search, but to just leave it at that- the attack with Zuko yelling it's unnecessary, and then nothing more than Ty Lee saying that Azula was wrong, she's always been scared of her- IT'S SO LITTLE. Remaining feelings of friendship, or anger, or WHAT- what's going on in Ty Lee's adorable head

oh but wait. she does say more. "Why are you always so mean?"
hum. This definitely carries with it implications that Ty Lee's moved on from caring about Azula, however much she ever did (Or however much she did in the ATLA cartoon, at least.)- because comics (and cartoon) gotta keep it simple and clear emotionally, and Ty Lee is complaining/scolding Azula about a trait of hers which has been obvious since her first appearance. When did Ty Lee begin feeling this way, to the point she asks such a simple (when the issue is undoubtedly not.) and accusing question in front of so many people? is there nothing else she wants to say? Mai had her distractions when working for Azula- one, it was nice just to be not at home, and two, Zuko. And Mai clearly respected Azula less than Ty Lee did and made all of this clear in The Boiling Rock. So Mai has closure when it comes to Azula. but ty lee

Isn't Ty Lee worth more than this, how she's used in the comics? crying She's certainly in an interesting position- such an upbeat, friendly, pink person, being friends with the mean and manipulative princess. She was portrayed in ATLA to have strains of vanity and there was no indication except for her anxious look at the Gaang's escaping gondola in The Boiling Rock, to have qualms with attacking whomever Azula was after, but after the war, she immediately goes over to the Kyoshi Warriors. what is loyalty to the fire nation to ty lee...? What about loyalty to her friend, Azula? Was there nothing but fear? Another interesting point about Ty Lee joining the KWs is...she ran away from home because she felt a lack of individuality, having all those sisters who looked just like her and now she's part of a matched set again. Write about it.

Such an interesting and fun character, is she being used like an afterthought...? T__T
An obvious notion for why she may indeed, is...she's not critical to the story or that popular as a character. HOWEVER. Well, first, she could've been- critical, as a friend, along with Mai- but she's not, so fine- so, she's still a rather major secondary character. And while there are a lot of other characters fans would like to know more about- Jeong Jeong for one- Ty Lee is certainly more near the center of the stage than they, has had character-building moments, and they're being squandered, possibly betrayed. don't just leave her in the dust? crying
If the explanation for Ty Lee's behavior in the comics is, SHE'S A GIANT FLAKE- fine, but WRITE IT.

Talked a lot here, hope someone can find some points they agree are interesting and extend the conversation. crying where you agree, disagree...you know. or of course bring up something else to discuss about ty lee, go for it.
