L was known to be the best detective in the world. He handled cases all over the world, usually dealing with things the police and FBI could not decifer. One such case would be the Kira case, but that would be known about at a later date. Mihael Keehl, more commonly known as Mello, was an orphan. Nothing is revealed about his past or how he had been brought to Wammy's House. Wammy's was an orphanage that raised especially smart children to become L's heir once he died.

Mello was always in tight competition with Wammy's top student, Near. He was the perfect candidate to become L. No matter what, Near was always at the top. Mello's competitive instincts drove him to be better than the albino child, though nothing could seem to make him smarter. Mello was everything Near wasn't. He was more out-spoken, emotional, darker, more active, and had the motivation that Near didn't. Mello lived solely to defeat Near, though in the end, his efforts were useless.

Once L had died, Roger had suggested that Near and Mello work together to be L. Mello quickly discarded this option and told Roger than Near could become L. He would live his own way. Shortly after leaving Wammy's Mello had been appointed the rank of Mafia Leader in Los Angeles' Mafia. He had brought the head of another leader that even Kira could not bring down, thus giving him his earned rank. Rod was above him, though he usually would sit back and let Mello do all of the work.

During his time with the Mafia, Mello had come upon a certain black notebook, the Death Note. The note belonged to a shinigami named Shidoh. While Mello and his thugs had kidnapped Sayu, Yagami Raito's sister, and kept her hostage, the blonde ordered the shinigami to sit outside and watch for any intruders since humans can not see him. However, Mello's plan was destroyed because of Ryuuku, Raito's shinigami, persuading Shidoh to just sit there as Yagami's squad infultrated the building. In the end, when only Mello was left, he had no choice but to detonate the building.

Amazingly, Mello survived this incident. However, he was left with a terrible scar covering the left side of his face, shoulder, back, and chest. He stayed in Matt's apartment after being healed, since he had no other place to go. The mafia was killed out. His last plan was to kidnap Takada, Matt was to distract the bodyguards while Mello took off with the woman. Takada had been able to keep a slip of the Death Note and had been able to kill Mello with a heart attack. Matt had been gunned down by Takada's bodyguards. Takada had not been able to survive, since Kira had decided to kill her as well.

Even though Mello had been killed in the Kira case, if it wasn't for him, Near would not have been able to defeat Kira. It was not Mello's victory, nor Near's victory. They had not worked together, not literally, but in the end it was both their victory to put Kira in his place.
