In the series, she is a freshman who is able to attend Ouran High School through a scholarship provided by the school.
Haruhi is a lower-middle class first-year student who is able to attend Ouran High School through a scholarship provided by the school for her grades. She looks like a boy due to her short hair and cute face, apparantly she had longer hair but had to cut some of it due to a kid placing gum in her hair. Shortly after arriving at Ouran (looking like a boy), Haruhi accidentally breaks a vase worth ¥8,000,000 ($80,000) while in the Host Club clubroom and since then has been forced to work for them to pay for it. Mistaking her for a male, the club initially has her working as their slave, but they make her a club host once they discover that, beneath her glasses and rumpled clothing, she actually has a good looking face. Her natural charm and relaxed demeanour makes her a favourite with the club's customers.
The entire club knows she is a female, but due to her debt, she must continue to work for the club. Wacky adventures follow as she tries to pay them off, and they consistently follow Haruhi around and generally annoy the poor girl while trying to keep her gender a secret. Although, Tamaki, the leader of the host club, protests a little for he wishes to see Haruhi in her feminity.
She introduced the instant coffee to the club who in turn made such a big fuss and was left in awe. After they tasted it, they often drink it during club hours. She lost her first kiss mistakenly to a girl when Tamaki, who slipped onto a banana peel the brothers threw away, bumped onto her. Her father, a great okama (a man who dresses like a woman) at an Okama bar, was not all too happy with this. Haruhi was a popular girl back at her middle school. She would be confessed to at least once a month but all she cared about was her studies so she didn't pay attention to the boys. She's also pretty slow at when a boy is trying to confess. She doesn't intend to break someone's heart, but she does so unintentionally.
Haruhi seemed to have created a bond with each of the Host club members. In the story, this was stressed in her relationships with Tamaki, Hikaru and Kaoru who have some sort of feelings for her. She had even went on a sort of date with Hikaru Hitachiin. Kaoru admitted to Honey that he does have feelings for Haruhi but is willing to stay back for the sake of his brother who also have feelings for her (though he does not notice it yet). Despite the three having stressed relations with Haruhi, only Kaoru has openly admitted his feelings. There are also hints made about the relationship Haruhi has with Kyouya. Despite Kyouya stressing that he was an egoist, Haruhi believes there is more to Kyouya then a self-centered guy.
She is a very sensitive, intelligent, and straightforward individual. However, her lack of hesitation in expressing her opinions can sometimes lead her to say, without any intended malice, things which others find hurtful. Her stubborn independence can also sometimes get her into trouble, as it typically doesn't occur to her to ask others for help even when she is in over her head, and has trouble understanding why people like her father and Tamaki worry about her. She is often bemused and sometimes irritated by the antics of the Host Club, but in spite of that, she has developed increasingly strong friendships with her fellow club members. She seems to be a bit dense where it comes to interpreting the subtle signals from people around her, especially when it concerns romantic interest, but is perceptive enough to tell the twins apart.
It appears that Haruhi has chosen to attend Ouran with the intention of following in her late mother's footsteps and becoming a lawyer. She has stated on more than one occasion that she is at Ouran in order to pursue her dream, and wants to see how far it can take her.
Haruhi admits that she has a low threshold for gender awareness; she was not actually trying to pass as male, but didn't feel the need to correct the others' assumptions. Her lack of differentiation between male and female gender roles was probably influenced by her father, who was originally bisexual and, saying that he could never love another woman, took up cross-dressing after the death of his wife. Whatever the reason, she is a fairly androgynous person who does not care much about the clothing she wears and seems to have little interest in romance. She enjoys taking care of household chores, particularly cooking, and is not easily frightened by things like bugs or ghost stories; her only weakness is a paralyzing fear of thunderstorms (astraphobia).
She has a soft spot for expensive food, which she is usually unable to partake in, such as ootoro, otherwise referred to as "Giant Tuna"; to her, they are a luxury. She likes tasty food in general, but gets especially excited over seafood. In some cases, the promise of such food can be used to bribe Haruhi into going along with the less sound plans of the host club. Apart from her studies, Haruhi seems to be weak in almost any other field. She's a poor singer and actress, bad at arts and crafts, and a poor runner.
