In nearly ancient Atlantean times, many vast cities and cultures existed underwater. While it flourished, Atlantis was a great civilization; it ruled the world through the power of its twelve major city-states, which were located on all the continents of Earth. Each of these city-states was ruled by a sorcerer-monarch who wielded the mystic power of his part of the world.The original Atlanteans were highly mystical beings; their society and the very structure of the world was based on the use of this magical energy. Over the millennia, the mana was eventually depleted, and the powers of science and technology replaced sorcery as the dominant force of nature.
One of the most memorable civil wars during the times of Atlantis was the era that a penal colony named Xebel was exiled to the Bermuda triangle. Mera's ancestors were among them, and over the decades her family rose to royalty.

Weaknesses: Her main weakness is her struggle with mental insanity.
Being around lead will weaken her control over water. She also has an anger problem.
Powers: Mera has the ability to control the density and movement of water at will, and is skilled enough to build a structure / tool out of it. ex: a sword, pillars, tidal waves. She has superhuman strength and endurance due to the density of underwater life.
Limited telepathy and empathy give her a bit more of an edge, but she's very well advanced in hand-to-hand combat, evening out the scales.
For a brief time, thanks to her anger problem she was deputized as a red lantern, but lost it at the sight of a reincarnated Aquaman, as she regained control over her emotions.
