Yes that is basically how it works and hours are what get u promoted faster
IT depends a job can take anywhere from 5-10 hours

Yes, number of hours moves you up through the last to become an A Man, however it may take years before they call in for more A Man or B Man so when they do call you better hope u worked enough hours to get upgraded otherwise you could be stuck waiting for ages.
We work under ILWU which is international longshore warehouse union

We do our best exclaim
There's not exactly a set schedule.
You go in and try to get whatever job's available at what we call pick which is around 3 PM
There's the morning pick too
Basically, that's where u try to get ur duty that's available( if any)
There's different levels of longshoreman: Casuals(which is lowest class, B Man, and A Man
Casuals have to work 5 times a week
A Man and I think B Man can work whenever they want
However, the lower class ppl have less work available to them due to A Man and B Man having first picks so when work is slow the lower class of workers have a much tougher time nabbing jobs

Oh yeah on the job injuries happen too
Not long ago my mom sprained her leg and she's almost died a few times as well
It's risky business
But it can be busy depends on the time of the year for example during the time of Chinese new year there is hardly work available

ur lucky u were much better off without them

yes the death rate is higher than the average job. There have been people crushed by containers.
It's not really difficult once u learn what to do. There's different jobs u can do tho but there's on the job training.
The death rate here is low tho Tacoma port has only had 1 accident in quite a few years. Down in Seattle there's been quite a bit more I don't think they're as regulated tbh

jk atleast u went out and did an activity is school

lines duty is when they put certain workers on call to unload or tie up ships that just arrived at the dock. Job usually takes about an hour or so to do and then we have to wait for the next call back. Can end up driving back and forth to work like over 4 times a day

I never did stuff like that in school much
Work doesn't really consist of groups I work with a partner a lot but that's about it
Only time I really do group work is if I have lines duty and getting that is extremely rare

I'm not thrown in situations where I gotta deal with groups much idk if that's good or bad
