Ah, amps are really uncharted territory for me. But I know Vox and Mesa from experience Vox and Mesa are really good. I know Mesa is tube, I don't believe Vox is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWmqLKAGX4k Here's a little video to show you a little of what I mean, the guitar here was playing through a Mesa Boogie tube amp, and I (bass) was playing through a Vox guitar amp. Despite the horrible acoustics, you can still hear the guitar and bass really well (until the sound cuts out), a lot of this having to do with the amp. Mesa might run a little high though, Vox might too, I'm really not sure. I know my usual amp is a Johnson, but this isn't tube and I don't know if they do guitar amps. Pignose is a pretty good practice amp as well.

I mean like new electronics, machineheads (if it can't stay in tune well), etc. For strings I like Super Mullets, GH Boomers, and Sfarzo Super Screamers http://www.myspace.com/sfarzostrings Here's a link to the Sfarzo myspace page. I would stick with your stock strings to get usedto playing and then swap out strings once they snap. And swap all of them when one snap, because if they are different brands it may sound different, and they will hold tunings different because the older ones will be stretched more and won't move as bad as newer ones that are still stiff.

Well, I'd definitely avoid anything over 200 when just starting out. It depends a lot on the brand too, though. One of my friends has an Epiphone SG he got for 300 and that plays really well, as does the Dean Vendetta which he got for 250. I know from my basses that My washburn was like 20-250 and that's one of the best I have because I put more money into it as I got better. My Titan was 200 and That also has a very clean sound, and came with an amp, and My iceman was also 200. You could either get some really bad guitars, or an awesome bargin, so I'd ask the guys at guitar center, they usually know their stuff pretty well. Also, with buying a used, it won't be as big a bummer if you do end up with the short end of the stick, because then you aren't worried about it getting trashed but still being playable, and you can put more money into it to make it straight up shred.

Some Deans are pretty good, my friend has a Vendetta he about swears by. Jacksons are pretty good, but I'd probably get one after playing for a while. I also really like Carvin. B.C. Rich is popular among a lot of metal bands, but mostly for the look of them; some do get good sound though. But yeah, I'd definitely go with an Ibanez starter pack or a $100-$200 Ibanez, and if you can get one used then definitely check that out. Gibson and Epiphone aren't bad starter choices either, nor is fender.

Guitar I have a fender Starcaster. Basses I have a Titan five string, A Cruise which I'm currently modifying, and a Washburn I finished modifying with a Carvin Neck and EMG Active electronics. User Image
