About

Five mice are in a mouse hole. They haven't eaten in days - they are starving. There is a block of cheese on the kitchen bench right in front of their hole, but the humans who occupy this house are right now in the kitchen.
Four of the mice decide to sacrifice the cheese for the sake of their safety. It's too dangerous to be brave. One mouse dares to get to the cheese unnoticed. It succeeds and takes its first nibble of the cheese. This is when a human spots it and flings it off the bench, effectively killing it. The other four mice watch in horror, and are relieved they chose to stay put.
That is the sort of thing people would tell you. They brainwash you into being 'normal'. Being mediocre. What do you think you're doing, they'll say, Stop being ambitious. It's dangerous to stray beyond the enclosure. Stick out like a sore thumb, and they'll amputate you. Don't try to be different, don't think for yourself. It's bad for you. It's a waste of time.
What they don't tell you is this: In actual fact, the humans had known about the mouse hole for a long time, and had already called for an exterminator. Two of the mice starved to death before that time came. The other two who remained were killed by the exterminator. These four mice died without having even touched the cheese.
Which of these mice's lives was a waste of time? Which was not? Which would you rather be?"
