okies, so...
either in forums or on someone's profile, you should see a bar that says online or offline below the avatar. put mouse over/click the arrow on the right, menu should appear, then click what you wanna do. this would be for PMing (private messaging) or adding someone as a friend.
to see your friends, you should be able to see the gaia footer at the bottom of the screen. if you dont, there should be a little tab thingy at the bottom left, click the smaller arrow. from there, you shold be able to use quick links, add a quick link, change outfit, see your friends, go to your PM inbox, or go to gaia chat, from left to right.
