Don't worry, the writers, actors, director - a man who is well-known for creating very strong and fascinating stories - and everybody else involved have said, again and again, that this isn't just about special effects. That the story drives the movie. They are also backed up by every single review that I've read of the movie so far (they have already done several gala advance screenings), which all point out that the SFX, ships, sets, props, etc. are all there to support the story - that this is all about the Enterprise crew, particularly Kirk and Spock, and how they came together to become the family that we know and love. For example, here is a link to a review someone made of 4 scenes from the movie that J.J. Abrams showed to special groups of viewers when he toured the world to promote the film.

Thanks for the comments on my new uniform. ^_^ It cost me a pretty penny, and I had to wait almost two weeks for it, but it is extremely well made, and my goodness, it actually makes me look like a respectable military officer. The first thought that came into my mind when I put it on was, "wow, this makes me look good," followed by, "with this on, I feel more like who I truly am than I have ever felt like wearing anything else." It's too bad I can't wear this to my college graduation instead of that silly cap and gown that I just bought today.

It's weird, actually... it's been four long, hard-fought years. My academic performance has fluttered up and down. Sometimes, I've felt like I lost sight of my dreams and might never be able to even graduate in four years. But now I'm about to make it - I am about to graduate. I've signed up for the ceremonies (there are two). I've joined the UC Berkeley Alumni Association. I have my diploma frame and cap and gown. And somehow I keep thinking that I should be happy, triumphant and proud, to be where I am, especially since my major is so difficult that for most students, maintaining an average anywhere near 3.0 and graduating in the traditional four years is nearly unheard of. But I don't. There's no sense of victory, no feeling of satisfaction or fulfillment. Just weariness. I'm tired, Neko-chan. I'm extremely tired... and I don't even know whether I'm happy to see it end, or whether I'm happy to make it out of college.

As for the Dragon Ball movie, well, I've always known that it was going to be a major reimagining and/or retelling of the story and that they weren't going to completely stick with the canon. Most international audiences only know DBZ and find the original DB very campy and boring and there are some mechanics of the story that just don't work with the live-action format - things like, maybe, Kakarot's (I have to remind myself to call him Son Goku) monkey tail. I'm just glad they kept his alien origin and the fact that he can go Oozaru at all, although they changed the full moon to a solar eclipse and took away the whole "needs-monkey-tail-to-transform" bit. Perhaps they could have done a story that stuck closer to canon and still done well, but compared to the other two attempts to make live-action Dragon Ball, this one's still by far the best - even if it'll never be as good as, or even remotely like, the animated series that we love so much. (I still love watching the fights. I'll sit there gawking at my monitor and going, "...I wish I could fight like that.")

So, I've always known it wouldn't be a smash blockbuster. It's no Star Trek. And especially outside Japan, where it isn't even cultural mainstream and doesn't have that massive cultural permeability and presence to back it up (whereas it does in Japan). And I guess because it's so different, and so not what a lot of fans, most of whom only remember everything that happened after Vegeta showed up, expected - I can understand why it feels like a letdown. Yeah, they changed a lot, but this is a c

Hi Neko-chan, here are a few very hastily-shot photographs of me in the apartment, wearing my new Dominion War-era uniform top. This is the one I ordered from England. (Took almost 2 bloody weeks to get here, too!) What do you think?

Haha, I wouldn't have expected you to go see the movie in a costume of any sort even if you were a fan. I doubt you'd be that obssessive and if you were, I would probably risk hypocrisy and tell you that it would be unhealthy. (I really would be committing hypocrisy. I have 3 uniforms, 2 of which were purchased from Star Trek: the Experience on my 21st birthday and the 3rd I ordered from a costume manufacturer's website in England, representing three different "eras" of Star Trek - the 2260s, the 2360s, and the 2370s-2380s.)

I'm glad you think the movie looks good, though, given that you aren't a fan. I have been saying to my fellow fans again and again and again that we Trekkies are just a teeny tiny insignificant minority of the world moviegoing public. If you really want a movie to succeed, you've got to make something that as many people as possible want to watch - hopefully more than once. And if you really want a story to live on forever you've to let different generations of people reinterpret it and to allow it to change with the times and with the audiences. If it ever stops changing or growing it'll lose popularity and die and this was exactly what was happening with Star Trek before J.J. Abrams came aboard to direct the new movie. Now, I can actually feel rightfully proud to wear the badge and tell people that I'm a Trekkie again.

If J.J. made a movie that was so nerdy and so "accurate" to the established Star Trek canon that it would only appeal to the hard core fans like me, he would not be doing his job because the movie would be guaranteed to fail and wouldn't save Star Trek at all - again, because we Trekkies are a puny, insignificant fraction of the world population. So I can accept that some details of the established storyline will be changed. I can accept that the uniforms, ships, props and initeriors have been completely redesigned and look almost nothing like they used to in the 1960s, even though Trek shows set later in the timeline established that they still looked that way at that time. And I'm hoping that the movie will be the blockbuster hit that the studio expects it to be. We'll see. It premieres for the first time at a special 300-guest gala in Sydney, Australia in five days. I'll be waiting to hear about the response.

Yeah, you did go bye-bye for a while. I noticed that you didn't even change your avatar. I'm sorry that it took me this long to reply. I have been extremely busy over the last two weeks. It's as if March was the month that the guys who run my classes randomly decided to just pile all the work on me. I still have one exam to go next Tuesday, an immunology test. Oh, well. At least my job training at the bioengineering lab is almost complete. In a couple of weeks, I think it'll be done, and I can move up and start tackling some real research instead of just cloning cancer cells all the time.

In the meantime, there was a brand new trailer for the May 8th "Star Trek XI" movie that just premiered with Watchmen a little less than a week ago. Have you seen it? This movie looks like it is going to be a great story. J.J. Abrams seems to have been able to do the impossible - he took the original Star Trek series, which was very ahead of its time in 1966, but is so silly and campy that it's hard to take seriously today - and took all of that unbelievable silliness out of it while keeping in tune with Gene Roddenberry's spirit and message and turning it into a big-scale, epic roller coaster ride of a movie. I can't wait to see it. It comes out just after my instruction ends and almost 2 weeks before my only final exam, so I'll have plenty of time to enjoy it. It's like an early college graduation present.

Here is the YouTube link to the new trailer. You'll be blown away, believe me. I almost wish you could come to Berkeley in May to see the movie with me, because you'll get to see me in my Captain Kirk uniform complete with electronic phaser, communicator and tricorder props. And trust me, I usually do a very good job of carefully hiding the fact that I am such a nerd.

Eh? "Not there, that tickles?" Hmm. I must find this spot. *Opens a dimensional void, pulls out an Agony Booth from the Mirror Universe, then reprograms it to tickle instead of triggering pain* Now, according to the instruction manual, this thing is supposed to trigger a different cluster of nerves every few minutes. We shall find this spot of which you speak. *shoves you into the Tickle Booth and turns it on* User Image
