Renji Abarai is the second real Shinigami we meet. He first appears in episode 16 with Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia's brother, to bring Rukia back from the human world. He defeats Ishida when he first arrives and is about to deal the final blow until Ichigo steps in. After another fight with Ichigo, Byakuya steps in to kill Ichigo. After believing that Ichigo will die in a short amount of time, he opens the gate to Soul Society.
The next time he meets Ichigo, they fight again, and Renji says that he blames Ichigo for Rukia's death penalty. Ichigo defeats him this time, and Renji realizes that he was the one who should have gone after Rukia, and maybe she wouldn't have needed to face the death penalty. Despite the fact that he somewhat hates Ichigo at that point, he develops a sense of respect for him and asks Ichigo to save Rukia.
Renji came from Rukongai like Rukia, and grew up as a street kid with her and a few other friends. When their friends died, he and Rukia went to the Shinigami Academy. In later flashbacks, it is revealed that he also went to school with Izuru Kira, Hinamori Momo, and Kuchiki Rukia, but wasn't in the same class as Rukia. He, Kira, and Hinamori met Captain Aizen during a kind of "field trip" to the human world. Another character he met while at the academy was Byakuya himself.
Renji later goes to human world and lives with Urahara, Tessai, Jinta, and Ururu at the shop. They all call him "Isoro-san" which means Freeloader. When Renji gets a gigai, he goes to Ichigo's school and yells for him to come out, much to Ichigo's annoyance. everybody at school then assumes that Renji is a relative of Ichigo's, but Ichigo says they're just cousins. Ichigo and Renji tend to fight a lot.
It shows that Renji may love Rukia, although it isn't proven. He just happens to care a lot for her and wants to be wherever she is. (One instance that shows his extreme loyalty to her was when he crashed through Ichigo's window and landed on Isshin Kurosaki's back once he found out that she had come to the human world again) Renji's goal is to surpass Byakuya in strength and even fights him once, only to lose. Renji, unlike the other lieutenants, can use "Bankai" the second release. His Zanpakutou's name is Zabimaru.
