HumanityI went walking today out of boredom, every one appeared to be to busy to bother with company so I decided to just entertain my self with an hour or so of people watching and a random walk where ever my attention span may take me. I wandered the streets aimlessly randomly turning in any street that caught my eye carefully marking each street mentally as not to get lost. I stumbled upon an military surplus store i had never been to. I entered, the bell attached at to the door way gave a chime. I perused through the assortment of war memorabilia becoming enthralled with the collection of items from battles and lives past.
There was a rack adorned with knives ranging from bayonets from WWII to pocket knives for camping. One knife caught my eye in particular. It was a Nazi youth knife, a reward for those the children who served true to one of the most hate filled organizations on the face of the earth. My mind began to churn, questions and thoughts began to race every which way i could imagine.
What would this knife mean to me if i purchased it ? what did this knife once mean to some one else ? was this some trophy of war from a triumphant American soldier ? How much blood shed has been witnessed by this little collage of metal ? Why was it being sold for the meager price of ten dollars ? Is it authentic ? what would my mother think if i cam home with a knife tipped with a swuastica ?
I took the knife in my hand, handed it to the clerk and purchased it. I didn't take the bag he offered for the knife, instead i set it in my pocket and left. As i walked back home i ran my fingers across it softly as it lay there nestled at the bottom of my pocket. I my mind played back every thing i have ever heard about would war two, the holocaust, the Russian forces, the conflicts in Italy and Africa. I wondered how these events came into play, What must have been going through the mind of those responsible ? will we go through something similar in the future ? Has humanity been doomed from the start ?
