Well I actually just got hacked today at a little after 7:00pm EST. What happened was that I had a Meebo instant message pop up from what looked like one of my friends here on Gaia. It was a link and above it said "Win a free items." Unfortunately I didn't think anything of it at the time, even though the link was not a Gaiaonline one. The place the link brought me to showed something similar to the Gaia Daily Chance but the items were much different. When I went through the process and clicked confirm, the page it went to was white/blank (honestly here I just thought my computer was being slow). After that, I kind of went idle going to other tabs on my computer, and when I came back to my account I had been kicked out of it and couldn't log back in. I was able to press the back button to find my username had been changed too. I was lucky I already had this second account to report the hack as soon as possible. I did it right away, then notified my friends of the incidence.

Honestly I feel pretty stupid for even trusting an site that was outside the Gaia online URL. All I can say, is if it does not say it is a Gaia website, don't trust it to give you Gaia items. The word "free" in very enticing, but it is probably to good to be true if it is through a non-secure site where the red Gaia warning page comes up.
To better protect yourself, I would suggest turning on the box in preferences that only let's you log on through your computer. I thought I had this turned on but I guess I didn't, but it is now in this account. Also it's good to also have the box checked that notifies you when your password is changed , and the email one. I was able to see the email account the hacker changed my Gaia account to go to because of this and was able to report exactly when I was hacked because of the time I received the email.
Make sure you report the hack as soon as you can, I read the information in the hack report and there is a 30 day limit between the day you were hacked and the the day you submit the report.
I would also try to show as little as possible about yourself, and have your information shown to as little people as possible that was you won't have people you don't really know looking at you stuff.

That's all I can think of right now. If you need anything else, let me know

Sure I guess I could. And yeah I'm trying to advance the security as much as I can because I felt like I was getting hacked again on this account a while ago. I logged out then trying to log back in I couldn't with my username and password so I clicked "forgot password" and was thankfully able to make a new one because my email hadn't been changed.

But yeah I that would be fine with me.
