in their cases, both were chronically ill and not themselves anymore, so it's bittersweet. they're gone, but they're also not suffering anymore.

it's a long story. aside from my normal loneliness/depression/etc, my mother's really sick and it's causing tons of problems. real possibility she won't be around much longer.

Yooo, that's wild. I've definitely never had an experience like that before. Sounds like something that could be part of some movie where the protag fights some interdimensional monsters that normal people can't see. Perhaps it's all the stress you're accumulating. It's the only thing I can think of.
