About
The glow of the city lights flashed past through the car window as the young girl drove down the street, well above the speed limit. Though she was lost in the blaring sound of the music she was alert and never lost control. This concrete jungle growing around her seemed alien and distant. A stranger in her own environment, she longed for the calm hush of the wind as it weaved through plant life. As the music swelled she thought of the quiet conversation between a brook and the pebbled shore it glided across.
Pulling into a parking spot she paused before leaving the car, waiting for the last few notes to fade away into the silence. She inhaled deeply the makeshift air of the suburban atmosphere. As the clock turned to a quarter before midnight she lifter herself from the vehicle and was greeted, to her surprise, by a gentle glow. She lifted her head and smiled at the moon. Her glow responded, bracing the girl for yet another late night. At least, she thought, I have the moonlight, if nothing else. The girl followed her feet through a vine covered archway into her apartment complex. Before ascending the stairway up to her small home, she lifted her head and eyed her surroundings. Human-planted trees and bushes reflected an odd mixture of pearly moonlight and dull yellow lamplight. Flowers glistened with sprinkler-water, blooming happily despite the cement that surrounded them.
She marched up the stairs and unlocked the door. Her parrot greeted her as she entered her bedroom from the main living room. The girl let the bird out and held her on her finger as the two looked outside together. A tree swayed outside through the dim light.
Perhaps nature wasn't that far away at all, she thought. She kissed the parrot on the head and put her back in her cage. As the bird fell asleep the girl relaxed and turned on her computer, beginning yet another long, late night.
