She wasn't aware of her cruelty towards others, at last not every time she punished her subordinates. It was somehow normal to her, living at Tsar's court and seeing how he dealt with disobedience. Sometimes it happened when she was very frustrated or angry. When she was aware of what she did, and if it was uncalled-for, she provided bandages - it was her way to apologize for such outburst. She used less brutal force as time passed.
She had strong bound with Alexei Nikolaevich and his older sister Anastasia. After hearing about their execution and not being able to find Alexei body, she fell on edge of insanity. In that state she was ruled by Communists. She don't remember much, or can't tell if some things really happened. She didn't care much what happens, she simply let them do what they want. She again became brutal. Because of Lenin and Stalin's rule with iron grip, she was often hurt by them, ending with bleeding wound almost everyday. That brought her, from edge she was, toward mental stability. However not completely.
Now she's a lot more calmer, using force just when it's needed. She tries to show world that she's not insane, as everyone thought. But it's hard to convince others after what happened during World War II and Cold War. She deeply believes that France can understand what happened to her.
Relations with Baltic's States (during USSR days):
Latvia: Ravis was substitute for her loose. Hugged a lot, often too much and too long. He didn't knew if it was punishment for something or not.
Estonia: Eduard was treated normally. Slapped if he made mistake, sometimes beaten. With time, beating stopped. Russia hugged Estonia quite often, maybe not as much as Latvia, most of the times a bit too strong - not on purpose.
Lithuania: Toris was Russia's closes subordinate. She treated him in a little different way then others. Punishing harder, sometimes talking freely without her usual smiling mask. She was sure that he's not afraid of her, at last less then his brothers.
