For the background you:
1. Move your mouse cursor over My Gaia.
2. On the drop-down menu go to the bottom and click on profile.
3. Look at the top right corner of the page.
4. Click on "Edit My Profile Layout"
5. You should see a blue tool box. Click the "Theme" button
6. Now you can change the background.

Tip:
*When uploading URL images from around the internet to messages, posts, and profiles.....
1. Right click the image and select "view image" (this should open either and new window or a new tab)
2. Highlight the Url of that image alone and copy/paste it into the correct location.

If you want to put one of your personal pictures that you have on your computer stored in a file you have to upload it to the web first.
Then do the URL thing.
