The Little Shop of Horrors
The Little Shop of Horrors was a good play and it kept me very entertained. I was a little skeptical at first because I didn’t think a play about a plant would be fun or enjoyable to watch, but then when it started I got really into it. The characters had great projection and amazing singing voices, although next time I wouldn’t get such a close seat cause they sing really loudly. At the beginning though, the actors seemed too staged, but after the first couple of songs they seemed to mellow down and it seemed very real. The ending was a real shocker too, I didn’t expect that kind of conclusion.
The characters were very relatable and hilarious. Their humor is something I didn’t expect either because it’s called Little Shop of Horrors, so I thought it was going to be scary. Although, the comedy was a pleasant surprise because I love comedies. I realized there weren’t all the characters listed when looking at the web page for the play but it was still very well put together without the other characters going along with the story. There was even this one guy who kept switching costumes and playing different roles and it was amazing how he was able to go from a raggedy hobo, to a psycho dentist hopped up on laughing gas, to a nerdy business man, and to many other personalities. They were all great and talented actors and actresses, when they sung they stayed together in harmony too. They all for the most part remembered their lines and kept it running smoothly no matter what the technicalities. Although, the man playing the store owner messed up on his lines and stuttered a few times and when he departed from the store he closed the door too hard and it swung back open, but they kept on going ignoring the small imperfections. When he messed up though it made the play that much more hilarious.
When the plant first started moving it was awesome, I saw how the guy had a prosthetic arm though, and how he was making the plant move when he was holding the pot. It was also really cool how the plant would get bigger and bigger each scene and then started talking and developed human characteristics. I’m sorry though if I noticed a plant wanted my blood I would have ran away or burned it, and if it started talking to me wanting human blood and wanting me to kill people that would have been too creepy and really indicate something is not right with the plant. I was in awe when he fed Audrey to it though, I mean I get how the plant convinced him to kill that horrible dentist and the owner of the shop due to his weak will and low self-esteem; but, even though she wanted him to do it, that was just absurd. Also, technically he didn’t kill the dentist or the shop owner, he just didn’t help them when they were dying, although feeding them to a giant blood-thirsty plant was very criminal.
The story was very drawing, like, it grabbed the audiences attention made them laugh, wonder, sad; it just reflected a bunch of different emotions. Also, just like many stories it had romance. It was horrible how the dentist abused Audrey, and it was obvious to everyone she was going to get with Seymour, a conclusion determined by their secret love for one another. When they stopped for intermission I was so mad and anxious cause I didn’t want it to stop I got so into it. It was so crazy at the end I was so surprised that Seymour just jumped into the plant saying it was going to kill it from the inside after being deceived more than I could ever have imagined, that was one smart killer plant. Never thought all the main characters would meet a tragic end by that mutated plant. It was interesting how they showed at the end how the people who got eaten joined with the plant. Oh my, that is going to be catastrophic with all the killer plants that are going to be made from them collecting the leaves from the original to sell all over the world.
There were so many twists and turns in this play and it was even more hilarious when people would get eaten by the plant because it showed when they would craw out of the hole in it to get out of the mouth when they were swallowed. At the very end when they all gave their bows for their wonderful performances, I figured the second hobo was the voice for the plant but a bigger shock came afterwards. There was another guy controlling the plant the whole time, I just thought it was the hobo who voiced it and who made it move. Cause I knew someone was moving it when it first got up because there were leg shaped stems, but I never would have guessed it was some random dude controlling the plant until he came out of it and gave a bow. Overall the play was funny, the characters did very well, I was kept interested in watching the play until the very end, and there were so many shocking moments; I enjoyed it very much and would love to see it again.
